You're right, kids don't need a portal to transfer! 8-)
So is it the portal’s fault that Jeremy quit our team?

Or are you saying the bobcat players really wanted to be playing in Bozeman, but it’s Choach’s fault they can’t?

I’m genuinely confused as to what Calhoun has to do with any of this.

If you read the post, I said explicitly that Calhoun did NOT leave the program because of the portal. He JUST left!!!

I am no fan of the portal, but this thread is ridiculous and J.C. was a reminder that kids leave PROGRAMS, griz included for a variety of reasons, some are portal driven, others don't like the coach, others...just quit!
Right, but the whole point of this thread is that an unusual volume of players have left MSU, especially kids that haven't been there very long, and Jeremy Calhoun leaving because he couldn't get a redshirt doesn't make your 10 or so departures in the last year normal.

I've actually heard rumors MSU is considering dropping football all together. The amount of players leaving the program every year is staggering and has never been seen before. These huge numbers are said to be a direct result of coaching and no other factors.

I don't have the exact numbers but I can only assume MSU has 20+ players leaving to warrant such actions by our president. This is truly the worst period ever in the history of Montana State football.

It's a shame too because I was liking our current trajectory. Shit.

You guys sure as sensitive about this.

The current number is at 9 I believe. Various reasons for that, some completely understandable, some are some are more of a head scratcher.

It’s not ideal but it’s not anything alarming either. I think some are trying to create a bigger issue than there really is.
30 kids were just signed, so there will be more leaving and/or cut before the season starts.

Not trying to change the subject here, but I took a look at Idaho’s forum last night for the first time in awhile. They’re saying they’ve lost 29 underclassmen and counting so far. Now THAT is an alarming number.

I get what you're saying, and 9 isn't 29, but I'd personally be alarmed if 9 young Griz left our team after the coach's 3rd year, especially if some of them were highly touted recruits or dropdowns.

I get players moving on who aren't part of the plan (see: Calhoun, Moses, Green from our team), who have been around long enough to see the writing on the wall, but it just seems odd to act like nothing is happening.

Where are you getting 9? 6 players left, no starters. MSU has way too many players on the roster, cuts are coming.

It’s 9 right now.

3 or 4 of them retired, medically or otherwise.

That leaves 5.

1 is Blake Allred, buried on the depth chart and likely saw the writing on the wall. Transferred to Tech I believe
2 were dropdowns that didn’t get the playing time they were expecting after dropping to an FCS program.
That leaves the 2 freshman receivers that are a little odd. They committed to a very run heavy team. Nobody knows the true reason behind those and I’m not going to speculate.

So when broken down that way, I’ll say again, I don’t think the loss of these 9 players is alarming...

9 from last year’s “highly ranked” (due to stars) class alone, who didn’t show up, left right away, or left recently:

- Maleek Barkley (SEC transfer who already left) - 3 star
- Dante Sparaco (Colorado transfer who already left) - 3 star
- Mekhi Metcalf (True freshman who left after 1 year) -3 Star
- Koby Duru (true freshman who left after one year) - 2 star
- Blake Allred (True freshman who left after one year)
- Donny Long ( True freshman who left after 2 weeks) - 3 star
- Malik Putney (True freshman who signed but never showed up to camp) - 3 star
- Sherrod White (True freshman who signed never showed up for camp) - 3 star
- Tyler Natee (Indiana transfer forced to retire for medical reasons...so that one doesn’t really count) - 3 star

Every single one of these players was a 2-Star or 3-Star player, with the exception of Allred.....that’s a lot of talent that just up and disappeared IN JUST ONE YEAR (23 total stars, which is what hero Sports used in the first place to rank that class high).

- Mekhi Metcalf

The 9 I’m referring to are players that were actually on the roster last year during the season.

Long, Putney, and White are not included in there. They didn’t even make it to fall camp. Which sucked, but that was a done deal in August. Can’t really blame a coach or a staff of running off talent if they never made it to fall camp...

I believe the premise of this thread is to show that something is going on this offseason and the Cats are hemorrhaging players and talent.

You can see by my breakdown above of those 9 kids, that’s simply not true. Not a single starter has been lost at this point, and really only Sparaco was even cracking the 2 deep this last season.

Would I have liked if some of those kids were still around? Yes. But it’s not the end of the world that they’re not.

I just checked that.....you guys have 85 kids on the roster and just added 30 more :o

That means they'll have to cut 20 kids to get to the 95 max number for Camp. That seems like a lot, especially for a coach who is on his 4th year and no longer building a roster so to speak.

Griz look to have 112 on their roster so similar situation but I would expect that while Hauck builds his roster in these early few years.

Choach's recruiting/offer strategy reminds me of airline overbooking. If they all actually show up, you're fucked!

One of my high school coaches said that you don't miss the players that don't want to be there. It is truly better to have a player or coach leave than have them affect the locker room chemistry.

I am not a fan of MSU, but they are doing something right in Bozeman. They have beaten UM twice in a row.

I’d be willing to bet any amount of money that Choate makes it 3 in a row against UM.

Could be. Lots can happen before then.

LA, the Cats/Choate have already won 3 in a row.

It's MSU, they are not very experienced counting streaks
