Cat game analysis

"The Cats are a three-point underdog, the first time they haven't been favored at home in 24 games. The last time was also to SDSU, in the 2021 FCS semifinals (a game MSU won 31-17).

MSU’s all-time record against the Jacks is 11-7, with losses in the two most recent meetings: in the 2022 FCS semis and the second week of the 2023 regular season.

Multiple MSU starters will miss some or all of Saturday's game.
First-string "Z" wide receiver Chris Long is out with an injury he initially sustained in the Oregon game, according to MSU sports information (he's wearing a walking boot on his left foot). First-string free safety Taki Uluilakepa, who hurt his lower right leg against the Ducks and needed crutches, has also been ruled out.

Cats starting "Mike" linebacker Neil Daily is in pads but is doubtful, per MSU, with a right arm injury (he's wearing a brace on that arm). First-string center Burke Mastel is also dressed but won't start (he's wearing a club on his right hand).

Dane Steel will start in Long's place, Bryant Meredith will replace Uluilakepa and Cole Taylor will continue to fill in for Daily. MSU will use the same starting offensive line as last week: JT Reed at center, fellow captain Titan Fleischmann at right guard, Everett Carr at left guard, Cedric Jefferson at right tackle and Braden Zimmer at left tackle."

Missoulian.

[Lots of injuries from the Oregon game. Was it worth it?]

Some BN comments:

"Blocked punt led to SDSUs first TD.
Shanked punt led to their 2nd TD.
Missed a FG in the 1st quarter.
Lost 2 fumbles.

You can't have that many mistakes against a good team, and win. Period.

Defense played well enough to win, at least in regulation.”

Offense struggled, especially in the 2nd half when they were shut out AT HOME! Couldn't complete a pass. Couldn't run consistently. Lots of 3 and outs. Time of possession was lopsided. Credit the sdsu defense for some of that, but honestly the offense looked better against Oregon. They've got to figure some things out quickly. Luckily we have 2 inferior opponents the next 2 game to do so."

"That shanked punt only happened because of a false start on the first try attempt (which was a BOMB and would have pinned them back deep inside their own 15).

Overall, just a sloppy, sloppy effort. I've not seen a Vigen coached team have this many miscues in all phases. Over a dozen critical mistakes in this game and yet it somehow got to overtime. Just can't have that many mistakes against elite FCS teams."

"I really thought our offensive line got pushed around. Specifically the guys on the right side had a tough game."

"Offense…. Too early to say much, but I’m not a fan of the new OC at this point. Giving the offense a solid C, and that’s probably generous.

Special teams…. My god."

"I think we have all the pieces to make a run but we clearly have to figure out who we are on offense. We have a QB that can clearly operate a lot of concepts but he won't last at his current running clip."

[Below is a quote from VIM. He's dumber than I thought about the Griz. Hauck doesn't have shortcomings as a coach and leader of a program. Bobby is terrific at those things. I'd be happy to debate VIM over that crap.]

"But don't worry...the Griz will continue to think they'll win a title with Bobby Hauck despite his obvious shortcomings as a head coach and leader of a program. It works for getting wins at Wa-Griz...and that's about it.”

I’d give Ol’ Piss a pass. He was probably really emotional. Regular folks sometimes root their reason in emotion. It’s the same kind of thing that causes tantrums in children. Many people don’t quite fully grow out of it.

I switched back and forth between games and Vigen was out coached, had terrible clock management and Lamson made several bad choices. supposed to have great running backs and was afraid to use them....Taco was held in check so either the rabbits did a great job of scouting or he was dinged up from last week....

Is SDSU that good and kittens played above themselves OR are SDSU and the kittens not really solid top 5 teams?
SDSU does not look like the SDSU of the previous several years...
Don't get the overtime running calls for the kittens...blocking for their line was all going to the left and you run to the left when the right side (yes I know misdirection running could be tough for kittens to understand) was completely open wwith ZERO SDSU defenders to the right of the filed. Saw that play mutliple times when flipping over to that channel on ESPN+.

Another week but the same story for the sorry bobcats. They are too weak in the trenches to compete against bigger, faster and stronger teams. The difference was really apparent between MSU Oline on SDSU Dline.

That sdsu "punt". I mean, honest to god, what was the plan there? And then to have the kicker just drop the ball and whiff it?

We are spoiled at UM with BH's special teams. And in a year like this one, they may make the difference in getting to Nashville.

Oh come on. Oklahoma State also looks THAT bad. Both can be true.
I think it is a case of Oregon looks THAT good! They have the best team that money can buy. They spent multi-millions building this team. There is no FCS team that would go into to Autzen and not get blown away, including NDSU.

The Cats came off that blow out and played SDSU even. As Hoops pointed out the multiple key mistakes lost the game for the Cats not the talent level. They have a couple of easy games now to clean that up for going into conference play.

Even some Cat fans agreed that the OL and running game was subpar. I didn’t think D looked good against Oregon. Must have done better against SDSU. A top FBS team shouldn’t be able to shut down a top FBS OL with all-world running backs the way Oregon did.

Did not think I would ever see a more bubcat way to lose a home OT game after the “block-off” by the buffaloes two years ago.
But then the bubs had the “measure-off”!
So bubcatz.

Just when I think the bubz couldn't possibly lose any dumber, they go and do something like that... and totally redeem themselves!

Also, when the chain gang came out, did you hear the crowd start cheering before they stretched the chains? 😂
Yeahhhhh…awwwwww.
That was beautiful

You're in denial. !!!

Your Shi__y Kitties 😸 are down this year--they not only lost TM and Brody Grebe to graduation but All Big-Sky TE/FB Rohan Jones to Arkansas, RB Scottre Humphrey to New Mexico, and OL Connor Moore to Michigan State and their replacements are not as good plus, you had 3 or 4 kids out from The SK Massacre in Eugene, and your special teams are worse than awful, can't punt, and your ST coach can't count to 11--having 12 players out on a punt return that gives SDSU an automatic first down late in the game !!!

I thought pre-Oregon that 🤔 MSU goes 9-3, worst case 8-4, post-Oregon and pre-SDSU, 9-3 and 8-4 prediction holding but softening, and now, post-SDSU, 8-4 best case, 7-5 possible. For any SK clinging to the 1

10-2 season record, you're saying your weaker, slower, less talented team from last year's 14-1, national runner-up, goes on a 10-0 run from here and if you believe that, I think you're living in an alternate college football universe. !!!

They might go 9-0 but Brent Vigen’s record in Missoula says you can pencil in the last one as an L.

I predict the Cats will be much improved after the next two games. I think they will do well in conference play. Going to be an interesting year in the conference.
