I love that in the comments, someone voted for msu beating the GRIZ in 2002 to end the Streak!

That's because, no question, that is the biggest thing the kitties have EVER had to crow about! :D

I would say one of our 3 National Championships OR our National Championship in Mens Hoops would be bigger. And I also agree that whoever said the 2002 game is an idiot.

I know there is a lot of maroon colored glasses out there... but check your history and you will find that the Championship Boxing match in Montana on July 4th 1923 was BY FAR the biggest sporting event....
But boxing is the dumb

Yeah, if you count that event failing epically -- as far as number of people attending go. Yeah, I imagine it would be if everybody came that was going to, but to me, from what I gathered from the article you posted, this was a "greatest event" -- that wasn't.

if dave mcnally and his 1966 orioles don't win it would be an insult to the sports intellect of montanans.
he should be listed twice.

he pitched game 3 of the 1970 world series and went the full nine innings. he also hit a grand slam home run in that game to put baltimore up 3 games to none. as listed he also pitched a complete game, 4-hit 1-0 shutout in game 4 of the 1966 series against don drysdale to sweep the dodgers.

What the...?

Where's Monte's Capital One Mascot of the Year trophies in 2002 and 2004? Hell, the concerted effort of e-grizzers alone to stuff the ballot boxes should've at least been one of the options, shouldn't it? You guys had to be finely tuned machines to click Monte, delete cookies, click Monte, delete cookies... hundreds of times per day

If this poll was done 30 years ago when baseball was the national past-time, then yes, it should win easily...however, football is king now, so I wouldn't be one bit surprised if that is what won -- even though I voted for McNally. :ugeek:

figures. well, don't forget, your mascots come as a package deal. You can have your Monte, but you need to take your mini-Mo too. a mascot menage-a-trois.... how nice!

on a serious note, I agree with McNally, hands down. McNally pitched 9 shutout innings to cap a record 33 1/3 shutout innings in the 1966 Series.

McNalley without a doubt. Great pitcher, one of the best athletes to come out of Montana and an all around great guy!

Ever hear of the McNalley Messerschmidt Free Agency? It changed professional athletic contracts.

"Miller knew that in an arbitration hearing, his interpretation, that the above player had now become a free agent, would most likely be upheld. He needed a test case and Andy Messerschmidt and Dave McNally provided it by playing out their 1975 contracts unsigned. As Miller predicted, Peter Seitz, the arbitrator, ruled in 1976 that Messerschmidt and McNally were indeed now free agents.

That is how the players won free agency"

WTF are you talking about??? That was one of the WORST title fights in the history of the sport. Thousands of empty seats, thousands of dollars lost by promoters. Could have been the greatest sporting event but Montanans completely dropped the ball by not even showing up. I have no idea how you can think this was such a spectacular event.

Big Mountain hosted the 1949 National Ski Championships. The first National Championship of any kind held in the state of Montana up to that time..........23 fight was World Championship.

Outside of Montana, no one gives a rats ass about the FCS, Im a Griz fan but a realist.

That fight was 90 years ago between the world champ and the #1 contender.

In 90 years will anyone remember (or care about)the 1995 FCS championship? Do they now? The normal sports fan does not even care about UM, when they see UM they think of Michigan, Minnesota, Miami or Memphis.

I guess you think locally and I see nationally... To me the greatest Montana Sports moment cannot be about something the 99.9% of sports fans dont give a crap about.

sweetness, you've been hanging out with doc gooden and daryl strawberry again.
your post makes no sense because outside of MT, nobody remebers that fight but at least one person does remember the chipper.
99.90% of sports fans don't give a shit about some FCS championship 17 years ago BUT
99.99% of sports fans don't give a shit about some fight in Montana 90 years ago.
seems like a small difference but the point is you're on the wrong side of the margin.
plus, that fight may have set the Montana sports scene back 90 years while the chipper brought it back

Sorry bro I didn't vote for the 1995 game. I realize no one gives a crap about FCS. I voted for McNally. Was a friend of my family and I actually grew up in the first house he purchased in Billings after retiring from the majors. Greatest pro athlete to ever come out of Montana.

F*ck boxing and f*ck the Orioles :butt:

Hell, I'd vote for the Bobcat's championship over LA-Monroe (or whoever) over those choices

I'm surprised the moment PlayerRep was conceived didn't make the list. That was probably the best thing to ever happen to Montana Sports...ask him, he'll tell you all about it.
