Carroll Impressive in Win

I realize there are some posters who look down their long noses on NAIA football----if you are one, you can quit reading right now. Because I went to Carroll's playoff game yesterday, and it was such a pleasure to see a well-oiled, well-coached team come out and execute its game plan to perfection.
Watching Carroll's offensive line take control of the game was something that did my Griz-heart good---bringing back memories of years past when the Griz had a dominating O-line. QB Wagner had plenty of time to pass, and was virtually untouched in the pocket. No wonder he completed practically all of his passes. And the blocking on the quarterback draw that put the dagger in the heart of the opponents just before half-time was amazing---- Wagner could have jogged the 18 yards into the end zone. Van Diest is well known for demanding a lot from his players, and will get in their faces when they are not performing----- yesterday he didn't have much to yell about.
The strength of the opposing team was the arm of its quarterback who took the ball under center and would take three steps back and throw. Its hard to get sacks under those conditions, but there isn't much loft on the ball at that range, so the linemen were told to bat the balls down, which they did on several occasions. Even, and this was probably the play of the game for Carroll's defense, a very agile defensive lineman leaped with perfect timing and intercepted a pass about five feet from where the quarterback was throwing. That lead immediately to Carroll's third touchdown which pretty much salted the game away.
My hat's off to Carroll coaches and players for an impressive, dominating performance.

Same impressions being at the game. It would be more fun to be in Missoula at a playoff game but this is good football and they will be alive in December.

I love watching Nick howlett's offense dominate games. His game planning and playcalling are some of the best I've seen.

Carroll College has a great program and will challenge for a national championship once again. Many people outside Helena do not understand what a great football program they have, and what a great coach Van Diest is.

I was one of those wishing Griz would hire Mike Van Diest as coach, but we are stuck with Pflugrad. I can tell you that the Griz would have performed much better this year under Van Diest than they did under Pflu. Discipline and ball security are priorities with Van Diest. Griz would be conference champions again and in the playoffs.

We're thinking about heading to Helena next Saturday for Carroll's game. Would be fun to watch an "impressive performance."

Another note on the Carroll game. Tight end Bubba Bartlett, who is about 6'2" and 245, caught all 10 passes thrown to him and was over 150 yards in receptions. On one pass in which he scored, he was actually pulling away from the pursuing DB in the last ten yards.

A body of that size with sure hands and speed----sounds like some NFL potential, and certainly the scouts have been in contact with Van Diest. Van Diest, according to the paper, thinks there is a very good chance that Bartlett will actually be drafted in the late rounds. That would really be a feather in the cap of both he and Carroll. Can anyone say Casey Fitzsimmons??

So how come no one was there to see it? My friend, who was there, told me the stands were half empty.

It was pretty sparse, but that's typical for turkey weekend.

For all of Mike's strengths as a coach (and he is a winner as a coach) he has some major weaknesses and lack of support with some big groups in the community.

We were going to catch the game on the tube but got tired of waiting for the geniuses to figure out the uplink so we walked on down to the stadium and watched. The crowd was surprisingly thin even for turkey weekend but we watched a VERY WELL COACHED TEAM systematically take the other team apart. MVD's plan was perfect.

Van Diest has major weaknesses? I think there are a lot of teams that would like to know what they are.

Watch the NC game against Sioux Falls. The game won't be close.

A lot of people stayed home because of the weather... Carroll has put together a good game day atmosphere and the game against Tech the estimated crowd was around 10,000! People knock Carroll for no good reason. The football is fun to watch
