I realize there are some posters who look down their long noses on NAIA football----if you are one, you can quit reading right now. Because I went to Carroll's playoff game yesterday, and it was such a pleasure to see a well-oiled, well-coached team come out and execute its game plan to perfection.
Watching Carroll's offensive line take control of the game was something that did my Griz-heart good---bringing back memories of years past when the Griz had a dominating O-line. QB Wagner had plenty of time to pass, and was virtually untouched in the pocket. No wonder he completed practically all of his passes. And the blocking on the quarterback draw that put the dagger in the heart of the opponents just before half-time was amazing---- Wagner could have jogged the 18 yards into the end zone. Van Diest is well known for demanding a lot from his players, and will get in their faces when they are not performing----- yesterday he didn't have much to yell about.
The strength of the opposing team was the arm of its quarterback who took the ball under center and would take three steps back and throw. Its hard to get sacks under those conditions, but there isn't much loft on the ball at that range, so the linemen were told to bat the balls down, which they did on several occasions. Even, and this was probably the play of the game for Carroll's defense, a very agile defensive lineman leaped with perfect timing and intercepted a pass about five feet from where the quarterback was throwing. That lead immediately to Carroll's third touchdown which pretty much salted the game away.
My hat's off to Carroll coaches and players for an impressive, dominating performance.
