Wow that is crazy. Pretty much unless you are the best at that position you are considered replaceable. I would love for the Niners to cut Phil Dawson and sign Dan Carpenter.

It boils down to if a team can get somewhat comparable results for less money from a younger player, the older guy is down the road.
Yeah, I mean Carp did the same thing to Feeley. NFL = not for long, when there's always someone younger and cheaper
Exactly what I was thinking

It sucks for the NFL Pro Bowler, but putting Carpenter on the waiver wire makes total financial sense. He was making 2.7 mill, and the guy he was competing against (5th round draft pick) is to make +400K.

It was an even competition in the pre-season, plus the Dolphins new kicker made a 62 yd (or was it longer?) FG.

I hope the dolphins lose 5 times by 2 points or less this year on missed FG's.

When Miami drafted Sturgis the writing was on the wall at that point. I'm sure he won't be unemployed long. Has he played long enough to qualify for the NFL pension?

Time to get out of there anyway. Hate the new logo. Why change tradition?? Some teams should never change. Bears, Steelers Packers come to mind. Dolphins also. jeez!!

Major bummer! He got Pro Bowl kicker salary and consequently there wasn't much room for error for Dan. Hopefully he get another shot soon, but you have to remember that there is only 32 kicking jobs in the NFL, very few inhibiting injuries at that position, and many very good young kickers that want their chance. He couldn't afford to miss the kicks he did last year and his agent is going to have to be busier than a $2 whore to get him another legitimate shot.

It came down to his contract, not his play.

If Carp is willing to sign a contract for less than $1.3 million, there are many options including the Pack.

Since he's not getting his $2.6m from Miami, I'm guessing he'd sign for the league minimum of $685k for players who are 4-6 year veterans.

As a lifelong Dolphins and Griz fan I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Dan in the NFL. Thanks to DirectTv's Sunday Ticket I have seen every kick Dan has made, and missed. Unfortunately Dan missed some key kicks last season that directly affected the outcome of three games, including a game versus the Fins bitter rival, the stinking Jets. I saw this coming the day he missed that kick. His release was written in stone during the draft. And when the new kid Sturgis nailed a 58 yd kick last week, that was it. The Dolphins did Dan a favor by releasing him midway thru the preseason with plenty of time to catch on with a new team. And he will do so soon, probably within 5 to 7 days. His large contract with the Fins didn't help his cause but he will catch on with another team. I have enjoyed watching his NFL success and will root for him wherever he lands...unless its the jets. Thanks Dan!

How has nobody considered St Louis yet? They have a 2nd year kicker and a rook. Dan is easily better then their "vet" at the leauge min, he's a steal. I'm not a rams fan and would deffenetly prefer him to go to the pack but I don't see them dumping Crosby since he has set an NFL record for most points in his first six years of his career, hits 80% of his FG's and his opponents avg start is at the 20. All vary comparable to Dan

Because the Rams have Greg Zuerlein, whom they are very happy with and he makes less than what Carp would get at the minimum. I actually think the Pack is a possibility.

Could he? I wonder what the league minimum is for his "tenure".

2014 NFL vet minimum for 4-6 years of service is $730,000, jumps to $855,000 with 7-9 years

It's 2013, though. $685k.

I was just using that figure as a basis to answer the question, and for your info the min for 2013 is $715,000

I am sure he will land somewhere, but it won't be the Packers. As long as he is not in Dallas, I will be happy. What teams are needing a kicker? Would love to see him in Philadelphia, but they have a pretty good young kicker with a powerful leg too.

This Packer beat writer seems to think Dan may be the answer.

Here are some memories of Dan Carpenter #29 playing for the Grizzlies. I loved the field goal in the last seconds of the game vs Eastern Washington in 2007 to win it 24-23.
