Canyon River Golf Club

If you're only playing one round, I recommend Larchmont (if you prefer to walk) or Canyon River (if you're a cart guy). If you're on a budget you could play two rounds at Larchmont - one walking and one riding, for about the same price as one round riding at Canyon.

If you want to test yourself over a few rounds, play the Missoula Country Club. While another poster says it's straight and unimaginative, I disagree. 3,5,8,11,13,15, and 18 either dogleg or have curvature that you must play tee to green. There are several holes where you can put it in the fairway but it's the wrong side of the fairway and you have to work your next shot. Greens everywhere are designed with an overall back to front tilt, that's just common golf architecture in order to properly accept an approach shot. Of course you have some side drop offs and a few greens with subtle tilts toward the back of the green. It's not a course you want to play just once though. Once it beats you up on the first loop, you want to try it again.

The only thing I don't like about football season is that it signals the end of the golf season.

1234--I'm a Montana native/Griz alum living in the Seattle area but I have played several of the courses discussed in this thread. Frankly you can't go wrong playing just about any of them and for my $ of these courses that I have played this is the order I would play them in with the best combination of course quality, cost, and driving distance:

1) Canyon River--5 miles east of Missoula with long, wide fairways (East Missoula)
2) Mission Mountain--60 miles north on US 93 in Ronan ( basically away from most development excepting a few homes/ranch houses, great views of Mission Mountains, wide open and lots of wildlife and home of previously awesome Grizzly Atheltic Association tournaments and pig roasts)
3) King Ranch--15 miles west in Frenchtown and a few holes along the Clark Fork River with plenty of birds (eagles) and deer
4) Larchmont--in southwest part of Missoula and others have given you the description
5) Polson Country Club--adjacent to Flathead Lake in Polson and 70 miles north on US 93. Older, more mature course but finely kept and manicured and what can I say--straddling one of the more beautiful bodies of water on the planet
6) Old Works--100 miles SW of Missoula on I-90 in Anaconda. Awesome Nicklaus design and looks like it could be in Arizona. Bit of a drive depending upon how much time you have but clearly well worth it.
7) University Course--mile or so south of campus at the foot of Mt Sentinel. Older, pretty flat, but pleasant and convenient. Like one other psoter said busy and also likely to have more than its share of struggling hackers.

So--that's my two cents worth and WELCOME to Montana and here's to all your drives being high and long and your putts finding the bottom of the cup! I was @ the game in Boone last September and all the ASU folks I met were AWESOME--look for the hospitality to be matched when you reach Big Sky country!

I agree. I have a tendency to fight the assumption by many that Larchmont is some muni-dog track. I know this isn't the place for this debate, basically I like to find good golf at the cheapest price. Same with skiing. Which is why I like places like Larchmont , Polson, Ronan, and Whitefish when it comes to golf. Good golf for the best bang for your buck still is Old Works. Second is probably Polson. But if you can play MCC for a guest rate, worth the round IMHO.

Missoula CC is in the best shape it has been in.....ever!. Other than Stock Farm (Charles Schwab's course in Hamilton) you won't find a course close to it in Western Montana for green speed and beauty. Everything is manicured to perfection. This is the year to play MCC if you are ever going to play it. I've been a member for 23 years and a past president and it represents the best you can play for the money. Old Works can be great, or truly shitty, depending on which wind is blowing out of the Pintlers on any given day. It is unique but the greens are slow and the wind is almost always blowing.

Agree on the wind, however you can circumvent the Mt. Haggin breeze by grabbing a tee time before 9:00 a.m. You can fish the Big Hole and the Bitteroot on your way back to Missoula. That route to "Zula" is absolutely stunning. :egriz:

I forgot to mention that the green fee for Missoula Country Club is an all day fee, so it actually is a better value than some of the aforementioned courses if you're up to 36 holes in a day.

Theoretically, any course is great if you drink enough. Just saying.

Smartest poster on any message board :thumb:

Oh and Canyon Creek is the best course in Missoula and I highly suggest the Old Works as well if you have time. I hope you enjoy your time in Missoula and your team scores low....... ;)

If you really want to get into the Missoula Montana vibe, I suggest that you ditch golfing and go Folfing at Blue Mountain. I have some friends that can hook you up with some excellent bud. 8-)

What a bitter old man! If you don't care about golf in Missoula, don't read the thread. What does it have to do with Griz football, an ASU fan coming to the game asked a simple question about places to golf. Get a grip.

:stupid: :dope:

GRIZ fans helping out an App State fan. What is wrong with that?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to demean the App State fan. It just sort of bugs me that threads like this can go on and on for pages, yet other nebulous threads which may or may not have anything to do with Griz football immediately get moved elsewhere. I'm not a golfer, so ... forgive me.

Outside of the ultra-privates (Stockfarm, Rock Creek, Iron Horse), gotta go with Old Works. And the wind is part of what makes that course as great as it is. It's a true test with holes set up for and against the prevailing winds. I've played just about all of em in Montana, and Old Works stands alone. Agree with Pony though. MCC is a GREAT course.
