Can You Feel It?

Cringer

Well-known member
I don't know about anyone else, but I can smell something in the air. A presence that has been gone for quite some time, and yet there it is. That smell might just be the fragrance of UM basketball making itself known again. Or perhaps it might even be a sound. Yes the sweet sound of a train comming through that long has since been gone from its daily stops. So I guess the question is UM/Missoula, can you feel it? Can you feel it comming back again? Who is with me? Grizzly basketball is coming back thanks to those who put in the time and effort. First the big sky tournament, and second an upset in the NCAA's. 2005/6 will be remembered as the year the Men's b'ball team is remembered and the Football team was "so so".

Ronbo is going to be mad at you

Back on topic: Of course I smell it, ive smelt it since Coach K got signed but im only one dude and its good that other people are finally starting to see what this team is actually starting to accomplish!

Pretty spoiled fan to say a Big Sky Champion team is so-so. That is disrespect.

A .500 team is so-so.

A .666 team (8-4) is pretty good. A .687 team in the NFL is 11-5, can't do .666 without fractions. A .666 team in MLB is a 108-54 team and probably the best team in professional baseball. A .666 team in the NBA would go 54-28.

These are so-so teams?????

Yes Ronbo,

We talk about basketball on this board, not football! Please keep your football comments on the football board not here.

Yes I realize that you had to make a point that we got disrespected but PM it him or something.

You know what Ronbo, you are right....they were VERY good this year all things considered. I have no beef with what the Football team did in fact, they went further than I thought they would preseason. (Don't get me wrong, I think next year the footballers will celebrate in Tennesee) BUT I guess what I was trying to say is, that this is the year Grizzly basketball is back in the fold baby! I seriously think that 2005/6 belongs to the men's b'ball team...4,900 last night, and I think come tournament time there will be a lot of people wishing that they could find a seat at Dahlberg. So in retrospect, the football team did a great job this year, but I think this year it takes back seat to the B'ballers. In fact I think my "so so" comment went into quotations because it referred to the accounts of Joe Shmoe on the streets of Missoula. Then again it's all good to me because last time I checked it was "Up with MONTANA boys down with the foe!!!!" for whatever sport you played. GO GRIZZLIES!!!!

P.S. MLB scheduling/records are not comparable to NFL schedules....come on...162 games compared to 16? In the MLB a team can go on a 10 game shnide and still make the playoffs...but in the NFL EVERY game is do or die. I don't mean to put down the footballers (and I have no right to). but the this is a bad comparison.

i concede, 1-aa has been good for us in football. it's revitalized our program. you can't argue with 25,000 dedicated howling fans, or a #25 rating in the entire country by s.i. for game-day atmosphere, or two national championships among five appearances in championship games, or the reputation this run has garnered for the university, or the benefits that have accrued for fund-raising. it's been a glorious two decades of football at montana.

at the same time, being a big fish in a small pond has meant we remain a minnow outside it. nobody outside a few small-town enclaves in this country has any respect for 1-aa football. ratings for even a national championship game are zilch. few 1-aa fans themselves much care about the outcome after their team has been eliminated from the playoffs. i'd wager that way fewer than half of montana fans could tell you who won the 1-aa championship game this year.

which is way different from basketball. when you win respect in basketball, as gonzaga, utah and new mexico have done, as nevada and utah state are now doing (all teams that were once conference foes of the griz) you do it on a national level. you earn real national respect. you get on television. you're in the big leagues, not the little leagues.

understand, i'm not dissing football. i'm as big a fan as anybody on this board. i'm just trying to explain for the benefit of the football junkies here why the chance to play with the best will always have appeal for a growing segment of the montana fan base, especially those that remember the glory-days of micheal ray richardson and larry krystkowiak, or that night on the big stage that we almost knocked off john wooden and u.c.l.a. in what was wooden's final year as head coach.

that was a huge challenge. but even in defeat, it won us our greatest respect.

I can smell it Cringer. It brings a big smile to my face when I see Krysko on the sideline going nuts. You can tell he cares about this team & this University. He talked the other day about if the students come out he will fight to have them moved back to the side of court. Students get your butts to the game, this team is looking like it could be special & they need you! Go GRIZ!

Oh I have been to almost every home game this year NoIowa. I support basketball way more than any other sport. I also realize that this year will not be a peak year for the Griz either. I think they have some big losses in Matthews in Criswell, but I think these guys were a part of getting us back to where we belong. I think the future is what could take us over the top. I hate posting like this because you never know what can happen, and I almost live and die by the jinx. I just think these guys are above jinx's.

In short, I have been a big supporter of Men's b'ball here for the last four years, and I can't believe the difference between 2006 and 2003. It is time for attendance to start reflecting that change. GO GRIZZLIES!

I bet there will be 6000 at the game tonight.

Regarding that smell: It was me. I shit under the roll-out bleachers before the game. It's funny to watch people try to figure out what the source of that odor is.

It's great. The wisc.-mil game was awsome. Even though the good guys lost, it was the best griz bball game I have been to. The last one I went to was a couple years ago because I live in Helena, but im going to try to make it to the cat game and the conference touney(knock on wood).

I sure have/will. I had more fun at that game than at any of the football games. Although, I only got to see them play Fort Lewis, Eastern and Poly in the playoffs. I love how they are on the rise, and you don't expect it like you do with football. With only two seniors and Strait being a sophomore, the could be good for a while. I'd say pay coach K what he wants to keep him in Missoula.
