Can someone answer a question for me

Go back and look on egriz the days after Pflugrad was fired. There was a large amount of support for hiring Mick. Many thought it would add to some stability to have a coach that the players knew and respected. If it weren't for Mick, Canada wouldn't be here right now. He would have been gone due to academics. Has he done a perfect job? Heck no, but I respect him for what he stepped into.

And it's not disrespectful saying a college football coach should no longer coach I don't get the fans on here that get so upset by that. If you truly believe Delaney can win us a national Championship Id love to hear how you came to this conclusion since he's only beat one team with a winning record!

Well, he didn't have a lot of options when he chose Mick (which given the situation which led to the firing was absolutely the right call). Pflu didn't exactly surround himself with a staff with a ton of experience.

Engstrom needs to request Mick Delaney retire and get after a national search for a new head coach

So if this happens at the end of the year (it will), what will the complaint against Engstrom be?

Wasting everyone's time for three years....

Sorry you feel you've been cheated out of 3 years. A suggestion:

Bye bye, now.

Are you always such a prick, or has this been a recent thing?

I don't think it is disrespectful if you have that opinion. I think it depends on how that opinion is voiced. I think you can have that opinion while still being thankful for the time and energy Mick has put in the program.

You guys who still support this inept old man are in 100% total denial about this program. Have all gotten amnesia? The product this guy puts on the field is not even in the same universe as what we enjoyed for 20+ years here!

I mean, his decision to go for two with more than a full quarter to play was perhaps one of the worst decisions I have seen from a football coach. I though ole Mick could not possibly outdo his foible to kick-off to No. Colorado both at the start of the game and then again to start the second half. Has any team ever done that in history? I think it's it a first.

But he beat it today with that stupid 2-point try. Hell, to make matters even worse, he runs the ball off-tackle, for no gain, a play which had not worked all game long! You just can't make this sh*t up!

I am not sure if Engstrom ” hates the football program and is out to destroy it,” but Engstrom sure set the program back years by firing a damn good football coach (Pflugrad) and athletic director (O’Day) for reasons Engstrom never clearly identified, but were related more to covering up and deflecting attention away from Engstrom’s own mismanagement and failures than for anything the football coach and athletic director did (e.g., Saudi student rapist situation and other campus assaults).

Pflugrad was in the process of putting his high powered Oregon type passing offense in with the Griz and recruiting players with the skills to run such an offense (e.g., Jordan Johnson) when Engstrom blindsided him out of nowhere with the firing. Engstrom fired the athletic director because O’Day knew there were no valid reasons to fire Pflugrad, and O’Day had the character to stand up to his megalomaniac boss, which resulted in his own firing by the arrogant Engstrom.

Some ignoramuses on this board blame Pflugrad and O’Day for player/student discipline issues, but they had implemented disciplinary efforts beyond those in place with the prior Coach Hauck regime, and were more aware of such matters than clueless President Engstrom.
Engstrom tried to direct attention and blame for campus problems away from himself by making the football coach the patsy, and O’day knew this was wrong and he had the character to say so, and thus, also suffered firing by the megalomaniac Engstrom.

This resulted in a maelstrom and disruption in the football program. Engstrom brought in nice old coach Delaney to pick up the pieces, but Delaney lacks the resume to manage a top flight football program, and the Griz football program suffered its worst season in over 20 years, and has yet to recover to its former level of success, and likely won’t under current management.

So to summarize, Engstrom probably doesn’t “hate the football program” and want to “destroy it,” but Engstrom didn’t seem to care about the effect his arrogant unjustified actions had on the football program. We are still living with the consequences.

Bye bye, now.

Who elected you doorman, RE?

I'm just simply saying, if you're so miserable, leave. There are plenty of fans who can fill your seat. I simply wouldn't want you to lose any more of your precious one percenter time. Trying to look out for your best interests is all.

Hmmm... Thx for looking out for by best interests. You continuing to back RE however is a little strange.

I don't back Engstrom blindly or completely. I've disagreed with some of his decisions.

I just support him against insane statements such as he wants to destroy the program or have it be mediocre. They're ridiculous arguments that add nothing to reasonable discourse.

He doesn't want to destroy the program. Sports is just not a priority for him. Apathy really. As long as the dollars keep rolling in, he will not get involved. But I just had to laugh at your alluding to the fact that you practice "reasonable discourse". Come on man!

Fine. I am not really worried about what his intentions were in firing Pflu and O'day. The bottom line is that it was a stupid decision. I don't think anybody could deny that fact. Griz Ranger kinda crystallizes the issue in his post.

I was going to say, it's pretty high praise when those two pinchfarts dislike something you wrote.

Engstrom doesn't know much about athletics including football, and doesn't have much of an appreciation of athletics. No president with an understanding of athletics would have fired both the AD and head coach, especially without good reason. The firings were a major setback for Griz football, and will result in some people always having a negative view of him.

Engstrom is the one who insisted on bringing in the Dakota schools. He's the person who actually called USD to invite them to the conference. Engstrom insisted on doing the academic center and doing it before the weight/locker rooms. But for the Washington brothers' very generous donation dropping from the sky, UM would be many years away from a weight/locker room facility. Engstrom did nothing to get the Washington brothers donation.

Engstrom is negative towards alcohol and tailgating. I doubt that he will be able to have a negative impact on that, but who knows.

I am told that Engstrom has come to realize that athletics and football are a bit more important at UM than he realized initially. At the outset, his idea of supporting athletics was to show up at some games.

Engstrom isn't trying to destroy football or make it mediocre, but he understands enough about athletics and the importance of athletics at UM to know how to support it properly, nor does he care. His actions and (lack of) leadership have had a large negative impact on football and will continue to be a drag on football.

UM football is continuing to do fairly well in spite of Engstrom. Ironically, the return of JJ--after very poor treatment by UM including Engstrom--is a large part of what is keeping UM football afloat. I doubt that Engstrom is liked or respected by coaches or players.

Thanks you for setting us all straight. An insiders viewpoint like yours is invaluable. What would we do without you?
