Cal Scandal?

We all know that when Mike Montgomery retired at Cal, he recommended Travis for the job. But Cal went a different direction, to Cuonzo Martin, a big-time head coach at Tennessee, and the results seem to have borne out that choice. Martin has the Bears in the NCAA tournament, Friday against Hawaii, and has recruited two potential lottery picks, Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown. Rabb is a Bay Area kid who Cal was probably already on, but Brown is from Georgia, and that really boosted Martin's reputation as a recruiter. Good times for Cal basketball, right?

But amid all the good news, today's headlines are about a brewing scandal at Cal. Yann Hufnagel, an assistant coach, was fired earlier in the week for his involvement in a sexual harassment case against a female reporter. Now the question becomes, what was Cuonzo Martin's role in this incident, in other words, did he know, and if he did know, did he pass the information to superiors in a timely manner. Cal could potentially be on the hook for a big lawsuit here.

I always say, character is destiny. Travis has got it, that's evident. Cuonzo? Cal? The jury may literally be out.

Coach was hitting on the reporter a bit. Sent some text messages. Started in Oct. a year ago. Reporter called head coach to complain twice, she says, in about May. Admits she could have been more clear. Coach talks to assistant and makes him apologize, and he may have stopped the behavior. Reporter sends email to head coach in July. Only then does he contact higher-ups at university. Cal must have a broad sexual harassment policy that would cover a non-employee (would be interesting to see the wording) No touching occurred. Investigation takes a long time. Coach and asst not interviewed until October. Cal says it lacks resources to investigate faster. Cal just fired the dean of the law school for sexual harassment. Has other sexual harassment claims. Asst coach has hired a lawyer. I don't know the law on a non-employee bringing a claim against Cal for sexual harassment. It would be interesting to see if the behavior actually stopped after the head coach was called, and he told the asst to stop. Need more facts and knowledge of the law to assess this one better. Lots of info in the linked article.
