Cal Basketball

Back in 2014, when Mike Montgomery retired as the head coach at Cal, he strongly recommended that his Associate Head Coach, Travis DeCuire, be promoted to head coach. Cal had other ideas. They wanted a big-time, high-profile coach, so they hired Cuonzo Martin instead.

Our good fortune: Travis has averaged 20 wins a season during his seven-year tenure and graduated 100% of his players. Yes, we quibble about his style of play but not his leadership qualities or the results.

So how did it work out for Cal?

Started off great. Martin recruited Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown, now starring for the Celtics, and went 62-39. But then he up and left for Missouri, leaving the cupboard pretty much bare. The disastrous Wyking Jones came in and went 16-47 before Mark Fox was hired in 2019, only to go 22-37 so far.

In the local paper this morning, one basketball expert questioned whether Cal could win even one game in the Pac 12 this year. That's how bad things have become in Berkeley.

You have to wonder if Cal ever looked back on the decision to pass on DeCuire--or might ever circle back on it.

And admit they made a mistake back in 2014?

One day they will.

They already have....at least the fans have.....DeCuire was interviewed after Jones got fired but the genius of the liberal establishment at Cal thought he didn't interview as well as Mark Fox....Fox had been unemployed for at least a year to hone his interview skills while DeCuire had been coaching the Griz up until a day before his interview...not a lot of time to prepare for an interview that will undoubtably have questions about the situation at Cal....many posters on Cal's fan board have rehashed that decision for going on 3 years now......

Well, Travis does expect performance off the court as well, perhaps that's a bridge too far in that state these days. Some would even say it's racist......    .

SMH. Nice job revealing your subconscious, you inadvertently made yourself look racist by bringing the subject into a topic it has literally nothing to do with. And you sound like a real genius comparing the academic standards ( aka performance off the court) of Cal to U of M :thumb:

I agree with Hoops Watcher. Everything is racist today. Don't you get it? If not, pay closer attention.

I guess, when you are a racist, everything looks that way. That is what I get from many of your posts.

Good. But, to be sure, the only people I have ever heard or read that use the term "woke" are really the dumbest of the most immature.
