Back in 2014, when Mike Montgomery retired as the head coach at Cal, he strongly recommended that his Associate Head Coach, Travis DeCuire, be promoted to head coach. Cal had other ideas. They wanted a big-time, high-profile coach, so they hired Cuonzo Martin instead.
Our good fortune: Travis has averaged 20 wins a season during his seven-year tenure and graduated 100% of his players. Yes, we quibble about his style of play but not his leadership qualities or the results.
So how did it work out for Cal?
Started off great. Martin recruited Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown, now starring for the Celtics, and went 62-39. But then he up and left for Missouri, leaving the cupboard pretty much bare. The disastrous Wyking Jones came in and went 16-47 before Mark Fox was hired in 2019, only to go 22-37 so far.
In the local paper this morning, one basketball expert questioned whether Cal could win even one game in the Pac 12 this year. That's how bad things have become in Berkeley.
You have to wonder if Cal ever looked back on the decision to pass on DeCuire--or might ever circle back on it.
