Brock Coyle

"Brock Coyle, LB

Coyle began the year as a key special teams player and a backup to NaVorro Bowman and Reuben Foster. But he’s been a regular starter during the second half of the season playing “Mike” linebacker allowing Foster to play “Will.”

Coyle certainly isn’t the fastest linebacker, but he’s proven solid against the run and has the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff for his ability to communicate as the signal caller on defense.

Coyle is tied for fourth on the team with 54 combined tackles. He would be a candidate to re-sign with San Francisco for depth with Malcolm Smith expected to return and retain the starting job he was expected to have when he signed his $26.5-million contract last spring."

This article discusses 49ers who may not return next season.

Jabril Peppers ran a combine record for LB last February @ 4.46. Bowman ran a 4.7 & Patrick Willis about 4.5. Brock is in the 4.6 range (2014) so while he’s not going to catch Bolt, I think he’s plenty fast for a pro-backer. He’s not likely getting paid enough for his production this season, my bias.

Linebackers are SO much more than speed. Vision and intelligence (usually called football IQ in this world) can't be measured at the combine and make up for 80% of a linebacker's play. When you start talking about a Mike backer, you have to start including charisma and leadership, because he's your signal caller on the defense.

Give me a MLB with a brain bigger than his pecks and quads ANY day!

Vision is underrated; all good linebackers have top level vision. It is not easy picking up the backfield action through mammoth OLs. Excellent vision slows down the play for a linebacker.

Peppers is a safety.

Listed & tested as a LB @ the combine, my point - Coyle isn’t slow. Moved to safety by the 0-16 Browns. Now wishing he’d played backer for anyone else.

Coyle just had shoulder surgery that's expected to knock him out of commission until this summer.

He played all over the field for Michigan. He played some linebacker yes, but he was always a safety. The Browns did not 'move' Peppers to safety. He said as much at the combine, when he told reporters, “What do I look like? I’m a safety. I’m a safety.” (SBNation)
