MBBALL Brawl Game Thread

Another game of 50% or better shooting. Not as crisp of ball movement last night. Missed some open looks, but that was probably the emotion of the game. Nice to see a barn full of disappointed Cat fans at the end. Gonna be nice to take that Divide trophy back next year. They surely loved presenting it before the game. It just pissed the team off, I'm thinking.

Tough place to win as the Cats were 6-1 at home this year and were actually favored by 2.5 points because of it. The balanced scoring this team presents is their biggest strength. 5 guys in double figures again….rinse, lather, repeat. Leave it to the big sky crew to let them play the first half and then take a complete 180 in the second half and call every ticky tacky foul possible. The cats were in bonus with 13 mins left in the game FFS.

6-1 in league games, 10-2 at home overall before last night. Only home losses were to Cal State Northridge in overtime in November and by one point to Northern Colorado on January 9 after blowing a 20-point lead.

Huge win for the Griz last night.

Thought this quote from DeCuire was great when addressing the absolutely excruciating officiating.....

“I put three things on the board before the game tonight,” DeCuire said. “Play physical. Play tough. Play like a winner. The toughness part is as much mental as it is physical. It is surviving runs, surviving the whistle, surviving the momentum from the crowd. Tonight, I felt it was the whistle.


“There was times we made them missed or they missed but every time they missed down the stretch the last 11 minutes, they went to the free throw line. I thought we could have caved. It’s hard to get momentum when you are taking the ball out of the net or taking the ball out of bounds every possession. I thought the guys did a phenomenal job of hanging in there mentally and responding to big plays.”

No sh#t! Very inconsistent from first to second half. Almost a blueprint to the Idaho State game. The refs seem to be reacting to the coaches working them.

If I were an officer @ First Interstate Bank HQ here in Billings, I would tell AD Leon Costello and his Shi__y Kitty cabinet to get their puny, cramped, dingy conference room refreshed complete with 3 mike's and a spare because that bushleague setup yesterday in Boz Angeles complete with our First Interstate logo all over the disolay behind Coach, Brandon and Kai reflects badly on our bank !!!

Jesus. 100% spot on Travis. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It was absolutely brutal to watch as well. And yes, they did a phenomenal job not caving to that bullshit.
 
The bubs shot 33 free throws.

Thirty three.

It wouldn't surprise me if a team that reaches the Elite Eight hasn't shot 33 free throws total up to that point in the NCAA tournament. So effing ridiculous. This conference is a joke, and the officiating is even worse. Breathing on someone isn't a foul.

THIS! is an un-addressed but important aspect of Montana's victory. The foul disparity was based on several "phantom" calls against the Griz over the final 10 minutes of the game that gave the Cats a full additional possession (either at the ft line or in possession).The irony: The Cats made 20/33 free throws while the Griz made 21/26 free throws. The Cats missed 13 free throws to 6 Griz misses. In essence: Montana's composure over the final minutes contributed greatly to this remarkable win in Bozeman.

Importantly: The women's game was called against the GrizWBB in similar fasion. The Bobcat women build their defensive intensity on an outstanding defense; I acknowledge that. However, It's my view of the game that defensive contact calls were lop-sided. I believe Montana's 19 fouls are a legit number. I do NOT believe the cats `13 fouls is legit. There were a significant number of contact no-calls during the second quarter that opened the door for Montana State's offensive run. There's no doubt that the Bobcats are the class team in the Big Sky Conference. But their aggressive style of play needs to be recognized by game officials. Simply put: A team that plays aggressive defense usually happily trades off a higher # of calls made against them than against the other team. By my view, the officials did not call body checks vs the Cats in the same manner that those same body checks were called vs. the Griz.

I understand that whining about officials is pretty lame stuff. But the disparity in calls yesterday was extreme.

And while I agree that whining about officials in one game may be lame, it is completely warranted when we've seen the same stuff from bsc officials year after year: calling a ridiculous number of fouls; gross disparity in the number of fouls; calling games completely differently in one half than another.

All anyone wants is competence and consistency. All we get in the bsc is incompetence and inconsistency.
 
This has been a major problem all across College Basketball this year. For whatever reason this year seems especially bad across the sport as a whole. Did any of you after the Griz game watch the end of the Arizona-BYU game? Arizona got screwed. If you thought the calls were bad in our game, you should've seen the call at the very end of this game. They screwed Arizona out of the win. And yesterday in the Drake-UNI game which was for first place in the Missouri Valley, there were a couple of really bad calls that led to multiple guys fouling out of the game that impacted the game going to Overtime. I get it, these guys have a tough job and they're not gonna be perfect but they have to let them play and not impact the game with the whistle.

I actually feel like for the most part, the Griz have had pretty good officiating until recently. Most of conference play and non-conf as well the refs have been pretty good. The three worst officiated games of the year were Utah State, Idaho State last week, and the cats on Saturday. Beyond that, I think it's been good for the most part.

Agree with your view GTID. I've been of the opinion that officiating in Dahlberg was the best it's been in years... primarily because most of the officiating crews let the players play. I think it's better to miss a few fouls than to start calling "potential" calls. Not calling flops of any kind or style has also really cleaned the game up, allowed it to develop energy. I actually believe that some tough, steady body contact within the key (without calling charging any way) has made the game a lot more fun to watch.

And most importantly, it's how the Dance is officiated. bsc teams simply haven't been prepared for the physicality in the tournament.

Do you only watch big sky games? Thought you hated the league. Lots of bad calls at every level. Saw a "Big Sky official" doing the Houston Texas Tech game last night. He must be good now!

No I watch a fair amount of CBB, although no where near what I used to.

Officiating can be bad everywhere. But it's consistently bad in the bsc, and not one person in the league office seems to give a shit. But none of that changes the point: even if the bsc refs were the best in the world (yes, I chuckled myself), they don't officiate games the way they do in the tournament. Which has ALWAYS placed the bsc at a disadvantage.

Hell, all of us can remember guys like Will Cherry driving the lane over and over and over again, getting bodied into the cheerleaders on the baseline, while the GRIZ all stand around, expecting a call. Meanwhile some big east team is running a 5 on 2 to the other end.

Not much consolation, but it seems the tournament refs take their guidance from play in the Power Four conference ... which has gotten almost as "physical" (rough) as international ball. I swear, we've watched Big Ten and SEC games where it looked like a public mugging out there, with no calls. The commentators generally shrug it off with "They're letting them play." But even Jay Bilas (maybe my least favorite "game expert") sometimes comments on how rough it gets.
It is also not uncommon to see the refs get pickier in the second half after "letting them play" in the first. My guess is that, in those cases, someone complained about a star player getting roughed up and/or injured. That level of play has gotten more and more like the NBA (at least), which generally revolves around the big name stars.
Both trends work against the lower level conferences, where teams may have just one relatively unknown star and rely more on team execution. In keeping with that, the refs call games more along the lines of the actual rule book.
