MBBALL Brawl Game Thread

That's a terrible idea. The more we make the game like the NBA the more unwatchable it will become.
Officiating is inconsistent in NCAA. Especially on screens and block/charge. It is a more physical game then when rules were written. Also should be 4 quarters. And then go to new high school rules for fouls so less free throws. No one-for-one free throws: Teams don't enter the bonus until they've committed five fouls in a quarter.
Two free throws after five fouls: After the fifth foul, teams shoot two free throws on all fouls.
Fouls reset at quarter end: Fouls reset to zero at the end of each quarter.
No carryover: Common fouls don't carry over to the next quarter.
Scoreboard limit: The scoreboard only shows a maximum of five fouls.

Maybe 6 fouls is not such a bad idea? Coaches typically pull players when they get 2 in the first half. Using the logic that a player would get 3/3 then teams wouldn’t concentrate on trying to get the better players in foul trouble and play straight up? Logic?

There's only 40 minutes in a game though and 6 fouls seems like a lot. The NBA has 6 because because they play 48 minutes. That makes sense, but 6 fouls in 40 minutes is a lot. 5 fouls conditions guys to tamp down the physicality. If we went to 6 I feel like virtually no one would foul out.

Let's go through all these:

4 quarters: I'm luke warm on that idea. One of the things I've always liked about College Basketball is the uniqueness of the rules and that it's a different game. I understand everyone else plays 4 quarters so it should make sense for College to do the same. If they go to quarters I'm fine with that, but I actually would prefer to see Basketball at all levels go to halves instead of quarters. If you're not gonna change ends of the court after each quarter, then that's what the point of having quarters? In Football they change sides so it makes sense. That's why quarters feel somewhat pointless to me in Basketball.

High School free throw rules: NO!!!!! That was the worst rule change the MHSA has adopted for Basketball in a long time. And trust me, the MHSA has adopted a lot of really stupid rules over the years. College coaches love the one and one and that's one of the reasons why they've been reluctant to go to quarters is they don't wanna lose the one and one. A lot of high school players and coaches were pissed about that and the fouls resetting at each quarter. It makes zero sense to me and you should be allowed to carry the fouls over and still get a one and one after 7 fouls. Women's Basketball went away from that too and it was stupid.

No carryover: What exactly do you mean by that? That a players personal foul counts shouldn't carry over to the next quarter? How would that even work?

Scoreboard limit: That seems kind of pointless. Just show us how many fouls have actually been committed.

I’m good with it being even more rare that a guy fouls out. The calls are so inconsistent. It would also give post defenders a chance to bang back against guys just posting them up and backing them down. The physicality isn’t tamped down for the offensive player in those ISO post ups.

I know zero coaches or officials that don’t like the rule change. And I’ve done both. The changes are all across the nation not just MHSA I believe. Being in the bonus for entire 4th quarter is terrible basketball. The carryover is from quarter limit to next quarter. Officials love not having running foul totals after bonus is reached. It was same way when you reached 10. So not significant change. NCAA has multiple TV timeouts so why have artificial ones instead of ones at quarter breaks? Then reset the fouls. Shoot free throws in late stages of game under pressure instead of constantly breaking up the flow of play?

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't have a problem with the College rules. I like them and most of them make sense. The only thing they do need to address is the lengthy reviews. Put a 1 minute timer on it and then make a call. Reviews should be no longer than a full timeout.

This is how it is done every where but men's NCAA basketball. When the NCAA went to quarter system for women's basketball, the games lasted on average 5 minutes less than prior to the change. Why? Because there were fewer media time outs. I also think the mens should go to the quarter system just like the womens, high school, and professional.

I agree with that. I love college basketball just not how inconsistent officiating can impact a game. And I think the majority of officials are good hard working folks that try to get it right. But they are human and so many calls that could go either way have a significant impact. So if you give players an extra foul and reset at quarters it has less impact in my opinion.
