FWIW, VCU was 27-6, 7th in the midmajor poll, CAA conference RPI ranking 15th, coming off a Final 4 and Joe Lunardi had them NOT getting an at-large bid had they not won their conference tournament.

The Big Sky has a long way to go.

You right about the conference. I honestly feel both Montana and Weber State are NCAA tournament worthy teams this year. Back court play and defense, does wonder in the NCAA tournament, and both teams have strong back court play. Defensive advantage Montana, though.

That sucks. I love the NCAA tournament, but it's becoming worse than the BCS. If you took a poll of sports fans, a vast majority would rather see a 24 or 25 win mid-major conference champion in the Dance than the 9th place 17-13 team from the Big East.

Except that the 9th place team in the Big Least has twice as many fans as almost any school in the mid major top 25 on a neutral court. How many Montana or St Mary's or Murray State fans show up in Phoenix for a game against Duke or Syracuse?

And if you think it's not about the money, you're crazier than an optomistic Scat football fan in July.

Seriously?? Is your argument that a few more bucks is going to made through ticket sales because the 9th place team in the Big East is in a game????

cough, cough. Television contract. cough, cough.....Not to mention those tickets are sold LONG before the brackets are set. cough, cough

One of these days the committee will have to make a stand against power conference mediocrity. If you can't finish .500 in your conference you should not even be looked at for an at-large, irregardless of what conference you play in.

Putter, I have been saying this for years, and completely agree with you on it. :thumb:

That would make conference games all that more interesting in power conferences such as the Big East, Big 10 and ACC.

Huff Post has Montana a 14th seed playing Georgetown...providing UM wins out....not a bad game...agression vs good guard play....could be fun..

Rankings: 2005-06 RPI was 66 and SOS was 207
2011-2012 RPI is 88 and SOS is 250

Makes total sense.

One thing though, the committee loves teams that finish the season red hot. And the Griz have done that (if they win the tournament). By the time the tournament is over, the Griz RPI could be in the 70s and not that much different than the 2005-2006 RPI, plus they will have one hell of a winning streak going.

The UND loss and a couple others early in the season suck.. Yeah... that freakin hurts. Look at what the Griz have done since the slow 5-5 start though. And the Griz had some bad losses back in 2005-2006 too (Boise St, NAU, Weber, ISU, Portland State).

If the Griz win the tournament, they will have one 20 of their last 21 games. They will have won 14 in a row. They will seriously be one of the hottest mid major teams in the country in their last 20 games.

If you look at the 12 and 13 seeds over the past few years, I think the Griz fit in nicely there. Sure there are always wtf moments with the selection committee, like when Utah State got a 12 seed last year with a 15 RPI, and Marquette got an 11 with a 64 rpi... but I don't see how the committee can ignore how hot the Griz are at the end of the season. A 12 would be great. A 13 would be ...adequate. Anything worse than a 13 and the Griz got robbed. The committee doesn't go on RPI alone.

I agree completely, PG. Every year the committee talks about how they reward teams for playing well at the end of the year. Well, now's we'll see if that only applies to "power" conferences.

Nope, hold on a sec.....This is the NCAA tourney and people show up regardless...this is totally different than football and bowl games, which is where u may be getting the money comparison. I was at the UM vs BC game in 2006..the huntsman center was PACKED, it was packed for the game afterward with gonzaga vs indiana.....it doesnt matter who plays in these games, they are always going to draw fans with the NCAA tourney format. pay for a session, see a few games...they dont need a 17-14 team from the big east to draw fans....i mean, montana vs BC, UM small fan base, BC across the country...huntsman center definatly crowded
