They always like to jump the gun prematurely. Just like last year when they took home the trophy for the pre-season conference championship.

Montana State has been trying to label themselves as 'Montana's team' for years.

Problem is their program hasn't been shiny since the 80s.

The bigger problem is that they aren't Montana - by definition. And they will never be Montana no matter how many Ms they put on their helmets. This campaign makes them look even more pathetic.

Yep, they are not Montana's team, so instead they write, 'own the state'.

It was George Dennison who understood, when few could quite figure out the point, the purpose of renaming (restoring) UM as "The University of Montana," replacing the former "University of Montana."

But it isn't named that. The "t" is never capitalized in any UM documents, logos or materials.

Tells you a little about how things turned out. The current staff didn't understand it and doesn't get it.
Reinserted “The” into “The University of Montana”

But it is still used. The current "ad" campaign doesn't use it because the current Administration doesn't understand the significance. Legacy materials clearly show this, including my letterhead stock.

You can see that Engstrom has gone back to the former identification:

He doesn't "get it."

But it's not chartered as "THE" University of Montana. That's not the university's name.

Yes, if it leads a sentence, the "The" will be capped. But it's not UM's name, although I regularly call it that.

But frankly, if you need to distinguish yourself by putting a capital "t" in front of your university name, you've probably just got self-worth concerns.

Well, that's not what you said. But let's go with that.

The University was specifically chartered in 1893 as "The University of Montana."
Section 1. There is hereby established in this State at the City of Missoula an institution of learning under the name and style of "The University of Montana."
https://www.umt.edu/research/ORSP/propdev/budgetinfo/Charter%20U%20of%20M.pdf

Since "The" University of Montana didn't actually even exist at that key point in time, I'm not sure what the "self-worth" concerns might have been, would have been, or could have been.

That is all in contrast to the charter for the folks farther east.
Section 1. There is hereby established in this State at the Trailer Park of Bozeman, or wherever the train chooses to stop nearby, an institution of animal and plant husbandry, including careful attention to Wheat, Chickens, and Goats, under the name and style of "The Cow College of Montana," the official mascot of which is hereby designated to be "The Noble Holstein."
Of course, in honor of Australia's contributions in WWII, the mascot was subsequently changed to the "Wombat."

Speaking of jumping the gun, is the coaching de-commit in the photo-shop gem? Can they just blow up Choate or Gregorak until they hire the new guy? Wait... Gregorak is already blowing up, let's go with Choate.

The problem in the msu picture shows Gregorak as the cheer squad leader.

Not a tough scull and cross bones black flag mean defensive coach.

Dan Patrick thinks it's "The". From my post back in 2012:

last night on "football night in america" Dan Patrick said during the highlight of Colt's Pick:

""Thee University of Montana Grizzly, Colt Anderson, with the pick!"

You could here people in the back ground yelling. Damn cool.
