Booming Attendance -- At Places

why not just report both, tickets sold and actual scanned tickets? it would provide a semi-factual reflection of what's up with griz football.

nah, don't wanna do that...

What does this even mean?

it means that even if the numbers are reported, universities/sports department have a tendency towards, uh, "optimistic" reporting.

Not sure I would say that reporting the number of tickets actually sold as being "optimistic".

Maybe they’re “optimistic” that all the ticket purchasers will actually show up?

I just don’t get the beef about this stuff…this is how literally EVERY school reports attendance…a sell out is a sell out, regardless of how many butts are actually in the seats.

Not all sellouts are equal.

From experience and observation, I don’t believe in the concept of 10,000 no-shows except in extreme circumstances.

Some pro teams will “buy back” tickets at cut rates (dollar? penny?) to realize a sellout. I’m fairly certain that boosters at some (or many) schools have agreed to do the same.

Not just at Montana. If you look at the Portland State official numbers and assume those were all sold at full price… I’m glad it’s Halloween today, because my maniacal laughter at even that notion at least fits the mood.

I’ll also put it this way… 4 years ago, pre-pandemic, for Oregon v Oregon State in Autzen, with the best Justin Herbert team, the cameras took great pains to avoid the Oregon student section. Except once by an obvious mistake… maybe not half full. Yes, it’s the day after Thanksgiving (and when I was going to UO, that game was always before Thanksgiving), but I think that should be telling. So should the fact that Nick Saban has to beg ALABAMA students to go to games. It wasn’t long ago that Michigan played to a half-full big house (which I won’t need to capitalize while they’re under investigation). Have you seen UCLA “crowds” lately?

This is not a “it happens back east issue.” This happens everywhere now. Arguably, schools are trying to address this by providing better WiFi access, or installing the ability to stage elaborate/overwrought light shows, and yet I don’t think it’s done much to help.

Agree. The difference between tickets sold and no-shows is mostly season ticket holder no-shows. At Montana, with nearly 19,000 season ticket holders, this is even more certain and this favors high attendance reports. Haslam counts the revenue $ that supports the whole AD with a big smile. The only risk with large gaps between the two is that some season ticket holders not going to games may give it up next year.

And obviously fewer butts means less concession revenue, but other than that, it’s a complete non-issue.

it is a non-issue, but "attendance" and tickets sold are two different things. i presume i don't need to provide the definition of "attend". and again, i know, it isn't a big issue, just a matter of pointless banter, really. our opinions aren't going to change the reality of the situation.

Since when was noise - Loud, a non-issue? Buts in the seats add amplification and I would suggest can be woth points for the home side.
