Stitt or Hauck? Hauck had the time necessary to prove himself as GRIZ Coach. Stitt, took over a much worse situation, than Hauck did. In Hauck's time as coach, he proved himself and his program as a winner. Stitt came in with many changes that needed to be made to carry out his vision. He needed to change the system, in turn caused changing of personnel and coaching staff. At this stage, Stitt is just wrapping up having the foundation laid. This year will be one to see how well the foundation is strengthened and added to.
As for the 2016 season, that GRIZ team ended with a terrible season as for record. Those kind of seasons are not acceptable, in my opinion. However, I do feel the team was better than their record. They were only blown out of 1 game (EWU). The loss to MSU was as ugly of a loss as possible for that matchup. I really do hope, the 2017 team uses a horrible 2016 season for motivation and a learning lesson, and move forward.
I am confident the GRIZ will improve on both sides of the ball in 2017. They will play more consistently. As we see the young OL gain experience, we will see gradual improvement in results and attitude. That will be a huge help to every qb, and 1 will eventually emerge. I honestly feel, if the OL improves, the rest will fall into place with the offense.
Defensively, we will need to see how well Semore learns. The defense slowly broke down as the 2016 season progressed. They especially struggled in zone coverage concepts. This season Semore needs to be more versatile in his strategy, and get every player on the same page. In 2016, there seemed to be multiple defensive break downs, resulting in huge plays for the opposition. It will be interesting to see what Semore does with personnel and strategy to improve the defense.
Special teams, the GRIZ have nice returners in place, capable kickers, punters, and special teams players. It appears to me, there needs to be more emphasis in better in game consistency as a whole. With Hauck, we absolutely knew special teams would be among the best in the nation. Can Stitt and his staff figure out how to turn special teams into a consistent strength of this team, to help the offense and defense? I am confident the offense and defense will do their part. Special teams, honestly is what I question most coming into the 2017 season.
Collectively, the 2017 season is a make or break season for Coach Stitt. More consistent play, a solid regular season with a playoff bid, will be enough for a contract extension. Another season like 2016, then Haslam will have the toughest decision of his GRIZ AD tenure. For me, I feel another coaching change, even if it were back to Hauck, would be detrimental to the program. I feel patience and open mindedness are what we all need to exercise starting now.
Coach Stitt, I will be pulling for you and am behind you. Coach Hauck, I look forward to seeing you continue to build your resume where you are at now, and hope to see you back as a head coach again, rather it be Montana, or elsewhere.
