The Griz basketball program has seen its share of tragedy. Besides Alan Neilsen, both Dave Gustafson and another former player named Kirk (can't remember his last name) were killed in a small plane crash near Big Sandy while shooting gofers from the air. Anyone remember?

Can you imagine how many points Neilsen would have had if the 3-point circle was used when he played? The best pure-shooter in Griz history.

...growler..shooting goferz from the air...
...have you ever seen a gofer from an airplane...
...try this..johnson makez the cardinal young pilot error...
...hot windy summer day..out scouting whitetail for bow season...
...landed at the ranch..and took off with the wind instead of against it...
...any mention of dave gustafson should be alwayz include "grizzlies hall of fame"...

Rod Brandon was a great defender & rebounder but he had a funky lefthanded spin on the ball that kept him from being a great shooter. Rod didn't back down from anyone. He was a great guy off the court as well.

I forgot about Rodney. Yes, he was one of the best defenders I have seen at Montana. Physical and tenacious.

I got the shootin' gofers story from a good friend of Gustafson from Dutton, MT. He attended the funeral, and should know the story. Not sayin' you are not correct, but this guy should know what happened. And, yes, you can see gofers from a plane if you fly low enough, which is supposedly why they crashed.

I loved Dave Gustafson's shot. First of all, he played before the advent of the 3-point line, and he used to shoot from way, way downtown. But his shot was very unique. It started way back behind his head, and he'd have his right hand directly under the ball, and he'd fling high arching shots at the basket with a ton of spin on the ball. But as goofy as it looked, his shot was extremely accurate. As kids, we'd practice that shot on the playground.

You are correct, a funky shot indeed, but very accurate. He was smooth dude from a Class C school who could really play the game.

not as far back but, I was a huge cain, fastings, and delvon anderson fan.
As far back as I can remember is Larry K, however, Gary Kane, Roger, Delvon, Kevin Kearney, Darren Engellant in I think 1991-92 was my favorite team of all time. We ended up at the Grantree staying next to some of the UM players in Bozeman. As a 13 year old it was probably one of the best childhood memories, as Delvon was an awesome guy and very friendly. Every time I see someone walking around with a pick in an afro, I think of Delvon before the game getting ready to go beat the cats. Also, a guy that probably not many remember and a guy that was easily one of my top five favorite Griz players is Eric Jordan. I remember giving him a call as a kid when I was in Missoula, just to tell him he was my favorite player. He was also very gracious to sit on the phone and have a conversation with an 11 year old kid.

I also miss the days of UNR, UofI, and BSU. There were some knock down drag out games against UNR in the early 90s. They had some big European player I think that was just nasty. Idaho also had some dang good teams. There was nothing better than hearing Udaho in Dahlberg. For me, those were the glory days!

That was back in the day that we would drive over from Helena on a Thursday night and drive back after the game a lot. Good stuff. Probably why I still like to drive over and back for a basketball game by myself. It recaptures some of the old time nostalgia, even though the atmosphere is nothing like it used to be. If the Griz win tonight, I will be going over and back for both games in Missoula if they keep winning.

I agree that the atmosphere was ruined by the renovation of the field house. I think that we would have a full arena today if the configuration was the same as it was back then. The students were very involved in the game, as well as effecting the outcome of the game. Not now. They have ruined that aspect. Thanks Wayne!!!

Then why don't you tell us why your story is more accurate than mine? Inquiring minds want to know.

O.K., here is some Griz BB trivia, for you old-timers.

First, an easy one: Name the starting five on the 1975 Griz BB team which nearly upset UCLA

Second, a bit more challenging: Name the first player off the bench on that team, a PF who was a great defender-rebounder, but not much of a scorer.

Last, the Big Kahuna!: The 1975 team had a senior point guard. Heathcote had recruited a frosh point guard who was supposed to be the heir-apparent in 1976 to start at point guard. But, he got home-sick following his freshman year, and left school. This opened the door for a non-scholarship player from Helena to take the open scholarship, and he won the starting point guard job in 1976 and started all season.

Name both the guard who left, and the guard who got his scholarship and starting spot!

More Griz BB players from the past. Got any anecdotes on these guys?

John Harrell
Willie Flowers
George Yule
John Cheek
Lonzo Lewis
Gerald Sanders

Shooting gophers from an airplane? Now that's pretty funny. Has G1 ever seen or shot a gopher--or been in an airplane? You couldn't even see a gopher from an airplane, let alone shoot one. That is a truly dumb comment.

I worked with John Harrell in work/study at the food service in the University Center. His nickname was "popcorn". He had a great sense of humor. He played for Cope and Rocheleau. I always felt that being a black city kid in the 70's and coming to very white Montana had to make him feel alienated. Being young and sheltered from Montana myself he was the first black person I had ever met. I believe he was a JC transfer.

Yep, he was a JC transfer from Hamilton, Ohio. He lived in Aber Hall, and always wore a full-length trench coat to class, and carried a leather brief case. He looked more like a business man than a college student. His nick-name, "popcorn", came from his penchant for cooking popcorn in his dorm room on a daily basis. Great scorer, who did not know what the word "defense" meant!

Yeah, about as dumb as 90% of your statements. Like, "Stockton shoots better when he starts".

One of my favorite players to watch: "Leaping" Lee Johnson. 6' 11" kid. Cost us for playing him but he could rebound. We had to forfeit that years games.
