BK's Salary Package

Ya and guess what? If BK goes out there and kills it this year, then he’ll get himself a nice long term deal with a significantly higher base salary. He sure doesn’t seem bothered by it. I think if he were he would’ve demanded more.

People got to keep in mind that BK needs to go out there and prove it this year. He’s never been a head coach, let alone a coordinator before. This should be a motivation tool for him to show that he can get this done. I have no issue with this. He can still make a lot of money if he hits his incentives.
He gets to prove it with a shit salary. One year prove it, and we'll pay peanuts 🥜. 8-4, you're out, you proved nothing. We're a very class institution!

Then why’d he sign it? People around here love to get pissed at the administration for every little thing, but if we had signed him to a 4 year deal with like a $300k base salary and then the team flops this year, then there’s no out for UM and then people around here would absolutely lose their minds. I woulda thought people around here would be ok with the idea that Haslam is keeping his options open for next year but apparently not.

Clearly BK doesn’t see an issue with the base salary. He would’ve never signed the contract if he didn’t like the terms. Hell with the high profile places he’s been, money probably takes a back seat at this point in his career. Like I said earlier, if he goes out there and proves it this year, then he’ll be getting himself a nice fat, long term deal next offseason. Everybody take a deep breath!

Not once has anyone said anything about a 4-year (or even multi-year) contract. But FFS, how about we at LEAST pay him what other coaches in the conference are making. My guess is this: BK was left in a lurch with BH’s sudden and unexpected “resignation”, didn’t feel that he was going to get a great slot somewhere else that late in the game (and probably didn’t want to move—AGAIN—so quickly), and took the shitty lifeline offered by the university. And I would guess the university figured they were operating from a position of power and took advantage of that opportunity.

Meanwhile, they look like cheapskates. It’s a very, very bad look (IMHO) for the university and wouldn’t sit well with me if I were a candidate in the (presumed) search that’s going to happen during and after the season. So, in summary, I’m not “pissed” at the administration…I’m embarrassed.

The base pay is interesting, but I don't see it as a big deal. I also wonder about what others have speculated. Did BK go low to spread more money to assistants? Maybe it was agreed that the savings from the reduced base would be spread to other important areas, like recruiting or in-house NIL? Has he already saved plenty of money from his many other good FBS jobs? Was it his thought just to get signed up and start (if it was going to be only one-year), knowing a nice year would get him a nice longer term contract. Is he more of a team player, and not a selfish pig like some of the big-time coaches?

People realize that BKs current salary has no impact on what the salary could be for any contract moving forward. If BK is successful, he has leverage. As for other possible candidates if the position is open, then the salary will be posted and negotiable. Weird to use an outlier as the trend moving forward. I think people are making way to much out of it.

I assume coaches can receive NIL as well as players. Is it possible to set up an NIL agreement with a coach? If so that would be a way to show support and a positive influence. $ per win, $$ to beat the cats, $$$$ for the championship.

I think it's easy to say that he can always negotiate for a better contract later, but in reality that's much harder to do when you're starting at such a low position. More than ever I feel like he's been put in a pretty impossible situation.

I agree. If he does well, he will get Montana "market" rate and a large raise. Right up to Vigen's or close.

Then he put himself in that position.

BH's total possible compensation wasn't even close to Vigen's so I seriously doubt that BK will be offered anywhere near that much, but we shall see.

What's impossible about it?

Are we not doing the whole “give him some time” and “it doesn’t happen overnight” things?
Yep. "These guys aren't even his recruits..."

Situation and inherent instability is suboptimal.

I am a HUGE BK fan - hope the team kicks ass.

How is successful defined this year for him to retain the job?

Hmm, let’s see, BH was 6-5 (4-4) in 2018. So that or better, right?

Honestly, I think BK is right where he wants to be with his contract. This isn't his first rodeo when it comes to contract negotiations and he has as much said that he sees Montana as the premiere place to be a head coach. I think he made the right move to sign a one year contract rather than 3 years. If he signs 3 years, he's locked in at the current rate. With a one year contract, when he does better than expected and better than anyone could realize, he will be able to sign a longer term contract at a better base pay.

For example. look at what he has done so far in recruiting. When he keeps stacking in state recruits, that's a huge bargaining chip when it comes to negotiations.

At this point, the best thing Griz fans can do to support BK is to give to NIL, join QB Club, buy season tickets, show up for games, support the team and the kids, and let the man coach.

Instead of finding things to complain about? Are you serious?

Magic 8-ball says...Chipper or u-haul.

Sane humans would say... -dude lost zero players after announcement. Looks like he is adjusting the defense...players like the new assistants...recruiting seems to be going well...access to the program seems improved...

I don't like instability of the arrangement, but admittedly, my 8-ball abilities can't penetrate Haslem's skull.
