Bigs Next Season

I have seen only one game this year (NAU in Flagstaff). I am very concerned about losing both of our 7-footers next season, with seemingly no one to replace them. We will go from being the biggest team in the league, to perhaps the smallest. Do any of the back-up bigs have potential? They never seem to get any PT this season.

Any one else concerned about our inside game next year?

I believe Qvale will be our only graduating senior this year. His shoes will be tough to fill for sure. But I look forward to Selvig as a senior next year with the way he's been playing lately.

Selvig is Junior. Ward and Reader will be the other big mixed in a bit with Hutch. I'm not too worried about it at all.

Qvale does graduate this year. Selvig returns for his SR season next year. I too was concerned about our bigs, but after seeing Reader, Ward, and Hutchison play this year, I am less concerned.

Even on a bad knee Hutchison is great on the boards, and solid defensively, which can only get better has he gets healthy. Reader has a very high ceiling, which we will see develop starting next year. Reader covers a lot of space, agile, athletic, and a very good scorer. I expect him to be our next great big after Selvig graduates. Ward is undersized, but rebounds well, has a nice mid range game. I just wish he were taller, because teams do take advantage of his defense inside. He is combination of both Hutchison and Reader, with some work with quickness could be a SF.

Tinkle has a full cupboard at guard for the next 4 years, with our new recruits this year (both guards). Aside from Riley Bradshaw (Corvallis) I do not see him pursuing any more guards next season. I am venturing a guess he starts filling big man needs next recruiting season. I am sure he has a few young bigs (currently HS Sophomores and Juniors) in mind, and making good progress. One of my friends in CA told me he has the interest of many CA bigs, in part to the pipeline, as well as Qvale and Selvig's development. Tinkle is getting a very good reputation in CA, OR, WA, and even as far east as WI and MN.

I will not be surprised come 2012 season we have a few more rather good bigs, 6'8" plus. Keep in mind there is young kid in Montana that is only a sophomore (name escapes me now). He has the size, but is much too young to really evaluate as to what kind of collegiate future he has. (feel free to name drop here folks.....I cannot remember his name).

Been concerned about this ever since this year's recruiting class was announced. We're going to need Hutch healthy and ready to go because Selvig seems to float around sometimes on the defensive glass. We're also going to need someone to play big posts, maybe won't see any in the Big Sky, but we're going to likely see some in the non-conference.

Hutchison and Reader will be good, just won't be the shot blocker that Qvale was. This may weaken the defense somewhat, but I don't think rebounding will be that much of a problem.

I think Growler meant that Selvig was obviously bolting to the NBA. Keep those grades up, Selvig, we don't want Tinks finding out about the myriad of ;) APR problems when dudes declare early.

I would like to see 6' 10" plus. When you play athletic teams they seem to have players with quickness and hops that will hurt the Wards and Hutchisons above the rim. Does anybody think that Selvig could play post next year.

I don't see Selvig playing the post next season, Bob. He's just not equipped to play with his back to the basket, and he's just too valuable in too many other ways.

Oh, for some reason I thought Selvig was a senior. I agree that he can not play center. Wish we could find a good JC center to recruit for next season. He does not really need to score, just play great defense and rebound. I saw enough positive things from the young guard recruits to think that scoring will not be an issue next season. But, I think rebounding will be.

I agree that he is not equipped to play with his back to the basket but with a long wing span and good passing skills to go along with his height he could do some good things. The sky is full of 6' 8" and 6'9" centers. I wished he could develope some consistancy. It seems that he will have a great outting and then the next game kinda disappear. Weisner(sp) could be the shooter from the wing next year. I am not convinced that Ward will be such a good rebounder. He is athletically challenged to a degree. Qvale will be sorely missed unless we get a JC. I like Reader if he can stay healthy.

I do think that Selvig has the ability to play the post if he wants to do it. It would certainly help if he would gain 15 pounds of muscle and a baby hook. When focused he has one of the best basketball minds on the court, and his passing ability could make him even more important in the middle. He would have to work on post defense and as indicated, gain some upper body strength for rebounding purposes but if he has any interest in playing in the pro's he's going to have to do those things anyway.

Having said that I am not too concerned about the post next year. I think Reader will be the odds on favorite going into next fall but Tinkle is gaining a tremendous reputation for coaching big men and I am certain that there are several big HS and JUCO players out there that would like a chance to work with this coaching staff.

I think the biggest need for this team is a true power forward. I'm not sure you can label Selvig a true power forward and while I like Steward's game there are times when he does not match up well, as in the NAU game. I'm dreaming here but a 6'8 power forward with Art Steward's aggressiveness would be an ideal compliment to this team going in to next year.
