Further dilution of the importance of the regular season. 12 team fields. Until now, the season champ got #1 seed plus home court, no trophy. Now the season champ will only get the #1 seed. I would like to see a trophy awarded the regular season champ as well as tourney champ.

So my question is this... what exactly is there to play for now that EVERY team in the conference gets into the tournament? Winning the regular season and getting the #1 seed doesn't mean much if it means you risk getting bounced out by a .500 club team. The probability of this scenario happening is probably extremely low, but how embarrassing would it be for a .500 or less team win the tournament?

Nothing.

I doubt any starters see more then five minutes action the last few weeks of the year. That'll be fun to watch. Meaningless games played by reserves.

Way to go BSC!!!!

I hope they do what some of the conferences do - give the top two teams double byes (guaranteed spot in the semifinals)

Let the bottom 10 teams battle for the other two spots in the Semis. lowest seeded survivor plays the #1 seed, highest seeded survivor plays the #2 seed.

Fields also said the committee brought proposal to a vote: Unanimous among ADs and also among school presidents. #BigSkyMBB #BigSkyWBB

From what I am hearing, that will not be the case. Top 4 will get a first round bye.

Sorry guys I'm pumped for this! I will be a next years tourney only two hours away :thumb:

...you guys realize that pretty much every conference invites everyone to the conference tournament, right? I don't see the MW, Pac12, etc bitching about the "regular season meaning nothing." The lower seeds typically weed themselves out pretty quickly.

I totally understand the financial and logistical reasons for doing this. All things considered, Reno was the logical choice among the candidates, even though I hate it, I understand it. Billings really shot themselves in the foot by only bidding the men's side. Ogden/SLC/Weber shot themselves in the foot by not pursuing an off campus venue.

I think the thing I will miss the most about the old format even more than the champion hosting, is that not all teams got into the tournament. That alone really made the regular season exciting.

I know attendance is probably one of the least important factors in something like this, but I really question whether or not the title game will even draw 2,000 fans even if it is Weber v. Montana who have the best fanbases.

So, stay or get healthy for a tournament few will attend. The home game entertainment dollar will go somewhere else.

The incentive is to not have to play Kentucky in the opening round. If a team is stressed about losing to a middle of the pack team, they shouldn't be representing the conference anyway. I'm glad it's in a neutral spot that atleast has other travel interests. - casinos and such. Atleast there will be something else to do. Wtf would you do in Billings, Spokane, or Ogden?

Difference is, the 5th place team in the Pac12 generally gets an NCAA bid. The 5th place BSC team doesn't get a bid to the Montana class B tournament. (And if they did they'd be one and done).

Ouch, I don't see how some of you think this is a good thing?

1.) The Big Sky needs to protect its best teams and try to put its best team in the NCAA and postseason tournaments, this doesn't help that.

2.) Who in the world is going to go to this tournament? The Big Sky has two big fan bases, Weber and UM in Bball, if they aren't playing in the championship, no one will be there, and even if its just one of them the place will be half full. Can you imagine a Sac St/EWU final, no one would be there...Comparing the Mtn West Conference to the Big Sky is a joke, plus Vegas is a whole lot different than Reno.

I understand the money situation, but I don't think the Big Sky made the right decision on this one...

Nailed it. I have P in Reno and I still won't likely attend.

How often do you think the 5th place team will win the tourney? My guess is that one of the top 3 teams win it almost every year, so not such a big deal.
