Griz til I die

Griz are the 2 seed and will play the winner 7. NAU vs 8. EWU on Sunday night. Should we win that, we'll get the winner of 3. PSU vs. 6. Idaho in the semis. I tend to think the best path for us is Eastern and Idaho. Although Eastern showed a lot of heart and fight last night, they've lost 5 in a row for a reason and I have a hard time believing they'll have that hot of a shooting night again. NAU is so inconsistent but if you can avoid playing Trent McLaughlin then we should be happy about that. I do think NAU will win that game but I'm pulling for Eastern as I think that's a better matchup.

As for the semis, I actually don't think PSU is that bad of a matchup for us. We easily could've swept them, but I worry about their fast pace, run and gun offense and all their size down low. Idaho on the other hand is starting to fade and has played so inconsistent all year. They didn't look the least bit inspiring last night in Bozeman. PSU swept Idaho so I have a hard time believing the Vandy's can pull it off, but you never know. All it takes is one good game. If Mitchell gets hot, that may be all it takes for them to pull off the upset.

We'll see who emerges from the other side of the bracket, but I'm very fascinated to see that ISU vs cats game on Monday. That feels like a true coin flip. The cats in the last 2 games have completely gone away from Brandon Walker despite the fact that he was the leading scorer on Thursday night, but he's such a liability on defense and at the free throw line that Logie hasn't played him at all in the last 2 games. As for ISU, they go as Dylan Darling goes. I'm curious which of these teams would be able to push UNC more. They both played them pretty close in the regular season matchups but couldn't get it done. We shall see.

Great analysis! Thank you. I'll add my own analysis: Griz are gooder. So there's that.

Would someone please explain to me why Northern Colorado is seated first. They lost to Idaho, Portland State and the Griz. Montana lost to Northern Colorado, Idaho State and Portland State. Idaho State placed higher in the conference that Idaho so I thought we would get a higher seed. Wrong again!

I wondered that too. The official two team tie breaker rules are here --

1. Two-team tie

a. Results of head-to-head competition (winning percentage) during the regular season.

b. Each team’s record vs. the team (winning percentage) occupying the highest position inthe final regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until oneteam gains an advantage.

When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record (winning percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.

c. RPI Rankings

d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

...
Northern Colorado has qualified for the NIT should they not win the Big Sky tournament. There's been a handful of mid major regular season champions that have already qualified like High Point, Chattanooga, and Lipscomb
Qualifying for the NIT has been completely revamped. Still favors the big boys, but opens the door more for the mid-majors, and even has a crack for the lesser lights.

The NIT had to do something to remain even semi-relevant. Hit some people alongside the head with a big stick and I guess you can get their attention. :D

To put it in simplest terms, the first tiebreaker is head to head matchups against each other. However since the Griz and UNC split with each other, then they look at head to head with 3rd place which is Portland State. The Griz and UNC both split with PSU so then they go to 4th place which is Idaho State. UNC swept them, The Griz split with them, so UNC wins the tie breaker.
