big sky recruiting news

this kid is a high school senior. two stars on rivals, and while rivals is more generous with the stars than scout.com, i have a lot more faith in the accuracy of rivals, based on their historical assessments of our recruits. i've got a hunch this kid is pretty good; also that portland state is quiety putting together a solid recruiting class.

What ever happened to the Portland St. players who got in trouble with the law? They going to be back next fall?

They proved how piss poor the media is in these 24-hour news days.

How the Oregonian hasn't been sued yet is beyond me.

Are you saying they should be sued for libel? Were the charges dropped? As I understand libel law, for the players to be successful in a suit, they'd have to prove the paper printed stories with reckless disregard for the facts, which could be pretty hard to prove. Papers get things wrong all the time, but doing it on purpose is quite another thing....
Not only reckless disregard for the facts, but also malicious intent. I don't think the newspaper was out to get these kids...

Malicious intent would be going a bit far, but reckless disregard for facts, yes.

The Oregonian has pulled down Pulitzer Prizes for breaking news awards, but in this instance they tried to make the news, not report it.

One of their sports columnists really went over the line within days of them being accused, considering that the charges were dropped, they didn't pay out a settlement, and the victim's credibility ended up being suspect. So, yes, I think that it was reckless disregard for facts.

Portland State has signed Wendell Wright, 6-5 SR SF Lakewood (Calif.) Mayfair. He orginally signed with Loyola Marymount but was given a release when LMU changed there coach.

more on wright:

Guard/forward Wendell Wright of Lakewood-Mayfair, Cal., who gained a requested release from his signed letter to Loyola Maryland after the coaching change, has signed with Portland State. Wright averaged 11 points, five rebounds and four assists as a junior at Mayfair, earning All-Suburban League honors. As a senior, Wright averaged eight points per game. "We are excited about the addition of Wendell, because he is the type of player we want to continue to recruit; an athletic wing, a skilled player who is a good driver to the rim," said Head Coach Ken Bone. "What I also like about him is he is a good passer and a very unselfish passer." Wright is the fifth player to sign with the Viking program this year. He joins a roster with six returning letterwinners, three returning starters and three returning redshirts. Portland State is coming off its finest basketball season in school history. The Vikings set a school record with a 23-10 record, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and making a first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. The grant-in-aid signing by Wright is non-binding since it has come after the basketball letter of intent signing period. PORTLAND STATE BASKETBALL GRANT-IN-AID SIGNING - June 12 Wendell Wright, FR, G/F, 6-5, 185, Lakewood, CA (Mayfair HS) 2008-09 PORTLAND STATE BASKETBALL NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT SIGNEES Jason Conrad, FR, C, 6-11, 220, Gilroy, CA (Gilroy HS) - signed during fall signing period Glen Dean, FR, G, 5-11, 165, Seattle, WA (Roosevelt HS) - signed during fall signing period Paul Guede, SO, G, 6-5, 205, London, England (Grace Christian HS/Tallahassee CC) - signed during spring signing period Donatas Visockis, JR, C, 6-10, 235, Siauliai, Lithuania (Cardinal Gibbons HS/Southern Mississippi/Butte JC) - signed during spring signing period

Eastern Washington has signed 6-10 John Clark out of Cochise C.C. in Arizona. He will have 3 years to play at EWU and averaged, 9.3 ppg and 3.9 rebounds last season for his JC. He will give eastern some needed size up front.

Montana and Weber State looking at Utah Prep.
Granger's Ray Tupusoa, 6'3" Swingman Tupusoa, a combo guard, is averaging 13-15 points a game in Vegas and is starting to get some interest from Weber State and Montana. "He's our best penetrator," Phillips said.

The Griz have also offered recently 6-9 235lb forward center Joe Kammerer from North Eugene High School. Weber State, and UC Irvine offered with Santa Clara, Montana State and Portland State also recruiting.

one we missed on:

Mike Felt Point guard Redwood Falls (MN) Redwood Valley AAU: Dakota Schoolers Ht: 6-foot-1 Class: 2009 (High School) The Latest: State's leading scorer makes D1 decision. Last year as a 6-foot-2 junior combo guard Redwood Valley's Mike Felt averaged a massive 30.3 points per game and that mark led the state of Minnesota in scoring. Felt drew division one interest and yesterday made his Division One dream come true. COLLEGE CHOICES: North Dakota State (solid verbal), South Dakota State , Nebraska , Montana ,and Weber State ....

FYI:

The Griz have also recently offered Sterling Carter a 6-0 combo guard from Franklin High School in Washington. I believe Franklin is in or near Seattle. I believe Carter has only two offers right now from Montana and Pacific, but is also being recruited by Portland State, Colorado State, and Montana State. He has a visit already set up for Pacific, but Colorado State is his favorite right now.

Montana State recruits pt. guard
Nathan Crabtree, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard, is trying to be more aggressive in taking the ball to the basket. Crabtree came off the bench and averaged 11.4 points for Poudre. Playing for the Colorado Chaos Blue, a highly competitive AAU club team, since April, Crabtree, Maag and McAuliffe have taken their respective games to Houston and North Carolina. Today they will leave for the Hoosier Shootout in Indianapolis before traveling back to Texas next week and then going to Las Vegas later this month. Hectic? Somewhat. Fun? Definitely. It's been a lot of fun," Crabtree said. "I mean just getting the chance to travel to all these different places and seeing all this athleticism from the teams you're playing against - it's really been an eye-opening experience." Crabtree has talked with coaches from Denver, Metro State and Montana State.

Griz are looking at 6-6ish combo forward Alex Walker Sioux City North High school. He is more of a power forward right now who can step out and hit the three. Good scorer, but is more noted as a rebounder. As a junior he became his high school's all time leading rebounder. Right now I believe the Griz are the only D-1 school who is recruiting him, though I do not believe he has been offered. He does hold quite a few offers from D-2 and NAIA schools though right now.

The Griz have offered 6-9 Eric Hutchison PF/center from Longview Washington. He also holds offers from Loyola Marymount, Eastern Washington, and Montana State, and is being recruited by 6-8 more schools. He averaged only 8.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game, but had an outstanding summer and is becoming a very hot property.

Weber State picks up a couple teammates as commitments. 6-7 240lb center Byron Fulton and 6-5 swing-man Blake Davis have both committed to to Weber. They both attend St. Mary's high school in Arizona.

Weber State gets two players from same High School
St. Mary's senior duo Blake Davis 6'5" 210 lbs. and teammate 6'7-1/2" 240 lbs Byron Fulton have made their decision to attend the same school for the next level. Both Davis and Fulton will be key to this year's Knights team, Davis at the shooting guard position, and Fulton down low in the post. Weber State will be a great place for both as athletic as they are, they have a chance to play on a championship team. Phoenix St. Mary's High center Byron Fulton and swingman Blake Davis both committed Monday to Weber State to play basketball. The seniors helped the Knights last season reach the Class 5A Division I final. Fulton, 6-foot-7, averaged 13.1 points, and Davis, 6-5, averaged 12.5 points last season. The Knights now have three players committed to Division I colleges. They recently brought in 6-4 guard Demetrius Walker, who moved from San Juan Capistrano, Calif., for his senior year. Walker committed last month to Southern California. Point guard Bandon Jenkins should be the fourth Knight to commit sometime before the November signing period. With so many four-year, college-bound players, coach David Lopez said he doesn't expect chemistry to be an issue with his team this year. "I don't see any egos on this team," he said.

Emmanuel Addo a 6-8 forward, from Minnesota has committed to Northern Colorado. Addo is a great pick up for No. Colorado, he compares quite favorable to Divaldo Mbunga of the 'Cats. Addo was originally also recruited by the Griz, but did not make/invited for a campus visit -I do not know which. This also impacts the 'Cats because No. Colo. and the Cats are recruiting a couple of the same big men.
