Big 12 not happy about being left out ... Impact on UM and M

Well I guess I'd have thanksgiving to hunt and never decide between football and a wrestling meet again. Probably could save a bunch of money as tickets would be more expensive and we'd get raped at home routinely. Get real.

At some point, this being a Big Fish in a Small Pond attitude has to vaporize if the Griz
Brand expects to survive in the modern era.....

It's not about being the big fish in the small pond. That is actually why moving up is inevitable. We are in a conference and division that doesn't contain many peers anymore. My problem is that the system as currently constructed, doesn't allow schools in our weight class (after a move up) to play for a natl. title and that sucks

Best possible scenario for the Griz might be a power 5 conference split where they determine their own National Champion and the rest of the FBS competes for "mid-major" title.

You're still trying to focus on winning a National Title at a lower level of competition. The FCS is "no mans" land right now. It's in danger of going the way of the pay phone. If you want to be
In a title hunt every year, move down to D2 otherwise plan for the future....

Again, not saying I want to be in the title hunt every year. I just would like there to be a non-zero percent chance of winning one, i.e. there being one that my team is eligible for. Griz hoops never has more than a %0.000000000000001 chance of winning the title but they get into the tournament every couple years.

You misread my post, the Griz will never ever compete with power 5 schools for a championship, on a game by game basis, sure maybe someday. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see them competing with the Nevada's, Boise St's, CSU's etc. It would just be nice if the ultimate goal was to play those teams for a National title rather than the who-gives-a-sh!t bowl.

We'd better be prepared to pay our players a stipend. I hope we do it personally, but I'm not sure how much $$ we could swing, or what the standard will be.

I say if that happens, Montana should go for it. We'll have the facilities and with a good new head coach, we should be able to compete almost immediately. Idaho comes back to complete the Mountain West.

Can't wait for the Griz to be battlin' Idaho for MWC doormat. That would really build the Griz brand!
+1

Don't be silly...Idaho would never get into the MWC

CV exactly- we are fighting the same battles here at ndsu with the fanbase that remembers the 80's-90's. this is 2015 now, time to aim for bigger heights.

BisonAlumni you are wrong.
NDSU is the mountain west, NDSU has already proven they can compete day 1 in that conference. Fargodome has been discussing getting to 23,500-25,000 somehow, someway. Having a full stadium with even with 23,500 is much better than some of the attendence's ive seen this year in the MWC.

Montana & NDSU would be great travel partners

Bisonation, you do realize that Columbus, OH is as close to Fargo as Missoula is. So from a geographical perspective would you think of NDSU & Ohio State as being potential "travel partners"? The Mt West may make sense for both schools but pairing them as travel partners isn't such a compelling idea.

Each game in the regular season would be a lot more fun, for me anyway. I've been trying to get jazzed up for Northern Colorado and Sac State for too long.

Touche. :thumb:

Just to be clear, I get excited for sure. I just think it would be more fun if homecoming was Colorado State or Nevada or some school like that. The increased risk of losing is something I can deal with. I've always wondered what the percentage of fans of UM want to move up versus the percentage of people who are only really fans of Griz FB. (I'm not saying you are the latter; just a general thought).

No doubt one of the major advantages of going FBS is the positive impact it will have on all the other sports, particularly basketball.

Do you think the Binghamton and Hartford big wigs would allow UM to move up? Not likely. I haven't even mentioned the FSPB.

I've always been a fan of being with our true peer schools. Probably only 4-5 in the Big Sky, but a bigger conference would impact us at so many more levels than just football.

The thing is, something like that would be SOOO Big Sky Conference. They'd give 100% veto power to a school who only is a conference member for golf.

Agree. The time is now. Time to make the move.

1. Hire an Head Coach that has a number of years of experience (at least as an asst.) at the FBS level.

2. Finish the 'upgrades" add on the the west side and south end zone of WGS, push capacity over 30,000.

3. I would take NDSU in a revamped MWC (which includes Montana) instead of Idaho. The Vandal have been a joke for years.

I'd love to see the Griz B-Ball program once again shining like the days of Jud, Monty, Blaine and Krysko.

Coach Decuire already has the Griz competing very well (just look at the 2 OT games vs. BSU and Cal and a win over NDSU which won an NCAA tourney game last year). Looking forward to the Davidson game this week.

I used to feel this way, until I realized that no one gives a frog's fat ass if you win the FCS championship. I'm ready to move up now.

At least a modest bowl game is: 1) on regular national TV and 2) pays pretty big bucks, verses now where the NC participants have to pay to get their band to the game...

You can take it to the bank that Idaho has virtually no chance at all of being invited to the MWC. Thier facilities are not up to par, and they have not been winning lately are two reasons. And Boise State would block them. BSU doesn't even want to play the Vandals, there is no way they are going to support Idaho to the MWC.

As far as FCS teams being added there is one and only one team that may have a shot and that is UM. I don't think the MWC wants to be like the Sunbelt and known as a conference that takes schools directly from FCS. Because of UMs history with member schools (especially those in the Mountain Division), it's fanbase, facilities, and winning tradition UM has shot.

NDSU may have a very small chance, but they are hurt, IMO, by being out of the geographical footprint of the league and by having no history with anyone in the conference.

All true. I would miss home playoff games. But seeing a fresh set of opponents would be interesting.
