Keller never won a title with the boys......Keller won the back to back in 90 and 91 with the girls....

Steve Keller is a Jackass who should bannded from any interaction with high school students. He gets my vote for the biggest douche bag in the history of civilization.

That's why a prestigious Private Catholic school like Carroll College hired him then...I was wondering their justifaction behind it. Thanks, 'wbtfg'!

They 'hired' him as a volunteer....he's not on the payroll. Personally I think that's the dumbest thing that Turcott has ever done.

I would go with Delgado. He put winning teams on the court every year. Even if they didn't have any stars they won because they could run and trap and press. Good coach. Fairfield is east of the divide so it is either central or eastern Montana.

wbtfg....do you hate keller so much because you went to capital......i have reasons to not be big on the guy myself...

I hate Keller because I had quite a few friends that played for him, and I heard many stories about this lowlife. I've also seen him "operate" in the bars around Helena. The thought of this clown makes we want to vomit.

In my expertise opinion, selecting the best coach in western Montana, regardless of class is like selecting the best of the worst. It is quite obvious that two of the three coaches in Missoula (AA) are by no means worthy of recognition. Although Jim Sampson has done a nice job up to this point with Hellgate, the best coach in western montana has to be John Thatcher of Butte. He knows the game extremely well and teaches it even better, possessing the unique ability to adapt to the talent he has been dealt. My second choice, although no longer coaching would be Steve Keller at Helena High. Although he had the knock of not being able to win the big game, the number of Western AA conference championships won speaks for itself. According to "WBTFG" though, it was the worst move that Carroll ever made hiring him, given the fact that they are in the hunt for the Frontier Conference Championship (5-2 in conference), rated #25 in the country, and own a win over Big Sky member Idaho State. It appears judging by these credentials that Keller has had no impact on Carroll, check your facts "WBTFG."
On a side note, the best coaches in the state currently and in past years have resided in the Central or Eastern part of the state. There is a reason why Western AA teams have only won two state titles in the last decade plus, (Hellgate in 93 and Big Sky in 97 correct me if I am wrong), it is a direct result of good coaching. Without a doubt, the best coach in the AA ranks right now is Mike Cole from Bozeman. No one can argue with the success he has had in the past decade plus winning championships in 91 or 92 (Adam Leachman), 98, 99, and 03. The 03 edition I beleive went undefeated and cruised to the state championship. Two other names from past years (90's till date) that I would throw out there for discussion would be Mike McLean (two state championships at Chester and four at CMR) and Dean Gamradt (first or second winningest coah in Montana history with a breifcase full of rings).

I've known Keller for quite some time. Played for him in the early 80's. He's not very well liked wherever he goes. Most likely because he's pretty arrogant (but how many coaches aren't?). I get along with him just fine but I'm in the minority.

I will give a vote to Karl Tait from Polson. Polson has struggled in year's past and has been solid this year. They have lost several close games to higher ranked teams and it is just a matter of time until they start to win those close games. beware at tourney time of Polson.

Steve Keller is an excellent basketball coach. He knows the game as well as anyone and has had tremendous success as a coach. I am not sure there is any need to personally bash the guy when you are simply talking about his coaching. His coaching has nothing to do with his personal life.

As long as he isn't painting houses..............

I don't understand why WBTGF is bashing Coach K so bad. Coach Keller is without a doubt one of the best coaches in Montana History. He has won six state titles and his overall coaching record is unbelievable. He deserves some props. WBTGF you can go fly a kite bud because your out of line.

I agree with you jusfishin, I think the reason Keller gets bashed on so much is only because of his personality.

Anyone who knows him is aware he is a very arrogant person, but that should NOT take away from his coaching abilities. Steve Keller has been a very successful coach throughout his career and although I dont like him as a person, I have tons of respect for him as a coach.

Look at Bob Huggins, Bobby Knight, Rick Majeras, etc.>ALL a**holes>I'm not comparing Keller to them, but I am just trying to show that MANY great coaches are arrogant and cocky.

Keller always got the best out of his teams.Don't bash on him for his personality, critique him by his coaching history.

I agree with this, but only on his girls teams. He is a very good coach and it's obvious he knows his stuff. However, he's never one a state tournament with his boys. In my opinion he's overachieved with his girls teams and underachieved with his boys teams.

I've known Steve since before he was ever a head coach, and he was the only head coach I ever played for. He's come a long way since then. However, back then some of his coaching techniques would not be what I would call great.

On a side note...if you want to talk about great coaches, then how about Loren Baker. He taught Keller everything he knows.
