Yup. Wasn't too bad in the first half but this second half they're calling a lot of tickytack fouls.

Akoh out with 4 fouls, Krslovic, Moorehead and Oguine with 3. Also looks like Oguine's knee is bothering before that last timeout.

Griz still up though with about 6:30 to go.

Think there are any Big Sky teams that are in the top 100 for fewest fouls? Nope. How many Big Sky teams are in the bottom 100? 8 out of 12 are in the bottom 100 for fouls per game with 9 out of 12 teams being in the bottom half of D1 basketball.

PSU: #351 - 23.9 per game
UM : #345 - 22.8 per game
SUU: #344 - 22.7 per game
MSU: #321 - 21.1 per game
NAU: #292 - 20.2 per game
EWU: #289 - 20.2 per game
UND: #265 - 19.7 per game
UNC: #263 - 19.6 per game
WSU: #189 - 18.3 per game
UI : #149 - 17.9 per game
ISU: #117 - 17.3 per game
SAC: #114 - 17.3 per game

How about fouls per possession? Ouch...10 teams in the bottom half of D1 basketball.

U M: #349 - 31.3% (30.1% at home, 31.9% on the road)
PSU: #342 - 30.4% (32.3% at home, 29.7% on the road)
SUU: #341 - 30.3% (28.5% at home, 31.8% on the road)
MSU: #319 - 29.0% (27.5% at home, 29.9% on the road)
EWU: #300 - 28.2% (26.8% at home, 28.8% on the road)
NAU: #280 - 27.6% (31.8% at home, 25.9% on the road)
UNC: #225 - 26.3% (25.7% at home, 26.7% on the road)
WSU: #203 - 25.8% (25.1% at home, 26.4% on the road)
UND: #201 - 25.8% (25.0% at home, 26.2% on the road)
U I: #192 - 25.5% (23.6% at home, 26.4% on the road)
SAC: #158 - 25.1% (24.6% at home, 25.4% on the road)
ISU: #104 - 24.2% (23.1% at home, 25.0% on the road)

How about free throw attempts per 100 trips down the court by opponents? 9 out of 12 in the bottom half.

PSU: #331 - 32.82
SUU: #325 - 32.29
UM : #323 - 32.17
UNC: #258 - 28.60
NAU: #240 - 28.03
MSU: #235 - 27.83
EWU: #201 - 26.93
ISU: #199 - 26.73
WSU: #196 - 26.59
UND: #168 - 25.91
UI : #148 - 25.47
SAC: #121 - 24.49

It would be interesting if those stats were broken down by conference so we could see which conference has the most whistle happy refs on average. I'm guessing the Big Sky would be one of the worst.

Maybe the overall talent of the BSC is a factor. You could probably argue that the BSC is the most talent deprived D1 conference in the West.

I seem to remember people complaining about the officiating when the Griz played at UW...is that because the Pac12 gets the poor officials from the pool?

Great post, Poto.

The "they ref other places" has never carried any weight with me. First, as I said, only the best bsc refs officiate games in other conferences, and what matters is how the games are called in the bsc. And how they are called is shitty, and every year it puts any bsc team in post season play at an automatic disadvantage. How many drives did we watch Cherry attempt in the NCAAs in two years where drove forced a shot and expected a foul, and instead we were watching a 4 on 2 the other direction. There's a reason for that, and simply brushing it aside with comments such as, "the conference is doing all they can" isn't good enough. The teams in this conference -- well at least UM and Weber --deserve better. MUCH better. And if we're not getting it, it's our jobs as fans to point it out and demand it.

No. That's because EVERYONE complains about the officiating in Montlake. It's not that the refs are bad, it's that they tend to favor the color purple.

I don't think talent has all that much to do with it. If you watch a lot of the major conference teams play they're allowed to be much more physical out there on defense. Also not many games become frustrating for fans to watch because the refs have completely taken over the game and killed the flow of the game.

If the crew that reffed the Griz @UNC game ref'd the fairly recent UVA @ Duke game I guarantee you more than 20 FTs would've been shot the entire game. Duke shot 11, Virginia shot 9. There were 60 free throws and 50 fouls called in the Griz @UNC game.

Now I get we aren't going to get the best refs like the ACC likely does but man I hate seeing a ref'n crew kill all flow of the game and turn it into a FT shooting contest at the 10 minute mark nearly every game it seems. It's like they feel if they don't average well over 1 foul called per minute (especially in the 2nd half of games) they aren't earning their paycheck.

I think it also gives the Big Sky team that ends up in a postseason tournament a bit of a disadvantage especially when they have to go up against physical team from a bigger conference. They expect to get calls that aren't going to be called by a better crew. I seem to remember Tinkle mentioning something like that after we played Duke years ago.

No, it's the bsc's fault we're stuck watching games on pluto, rather than on real television.

I've never had difficulties either. But my feed today was about 2:00 behind the radio broadcast. I have the fastest internet commercially available in seattle. I simply don't have a reasonable explanation for why that occurs.

See my post above saying precisely the same thing.

How many nationally televised games does the Mountain West have every week? It must not be many or they wouldnt have an internet based network to watch conference games...just like another Western Conference, which conference was that again???

MWC has at least 5 nationally televised games a week between ESPN2, ESPNU & CBSSN.

Completely different game. And that's the way the post season tournaments will be officiated and once again the bsc will pay the price.

Well if you can believe the TV listings in the Seattle Times, I counted 12 this weekend (two days of games) locally. Now, I only have a Montana math education, but I believe that is....let's see 12-0....ummm, 12 right? Twelve more games in a single week than the bsc has had on ALL SEASON!!!

I wonder if that affects recruiting at all.....

That's exactly what I was thinking. Our team, if they make it to the dance, won't be used to being allowed to play physical like the other conferences.
