I think you're putting too much stock in the assumption that "attention" will be paid to your game at all. And I think that is the point.

Interesting. ESPN feels differently. :coffee:

“We saw the opportunity, saw the need and desire from a programming perspective, and we feel like we can get a significant audience for this game,” said Brent Colborne, ESPN's Director of Programming for NCAA championships.

“Come August 23, right before Labor Day, people are starving for college football. People are ready for football. This is a really cool opportunity to serve those fans.”

The irony here is that if the Griz were playing the first game of the college football season on ESPN1, you guys would be saying it's the best thing ever. ;)

Yeah, you got that right. It's hard for Griz fans to accept that they're not necessarily the center of the FCS universe, and that this game won't be showcasing their self-proclaimed loudest stadium in this or any other universe.

Except we were approached first and declined.

Wonder why they didn't approach the bobscat?

To be clear, it was NDSU who was approached, and NDSU who declined. Thanks, NDSU. :thumb:

I'm sure ESPN will hype the game as much as possible during the broadcast, but you won't hear much about it outside of that. I mean, no matter how dull the game is, there is always that red field to talk about...

Don't you guys play on grade next to a sewage pond?

Eastern will bring as much attention to this game as they can. They will reach out to Roos, Jones, Stuckey, Cowherd, and many others and try to bring them back to showcase the school and the athletics. Hell, maybe they will announce the gateway's official groundbreaking is underway...

Eastern has been working on this for months and will give ESPN a lot to talk about. Now if we could only get gameday to come...

You'd think that game would be a good one for Gameday to attend, being the only game playing in the nation and all... but I don't see that happening. No offense, but Gameday is more focused on the larger schools with larger fanbases.

Wrong. College Gameday will be there since it's the only game on. Herbie will do a piece on the unique local food, including Carl's Jr. and Taco Bell. Corso will throw on an Eagle head and do that feminine screech/scream thing the students do when EWU gets a first down. Fowler will disagree with Corso's pick and Shoota will kneecap him before setting the Wazzu flag on fire and ripping an "upper decker" in SHSU's locker room.

I know you guys hate EWU almost as much as you hate the Cats, but all FCS fans should be hoping for a great game, and with their offense, there's s strong probability that it will be very entertaining. I've always been disappointed with how poorly ESPN markets the FCS playoffs, but I think this will be different, being the first game of the season and all. I agree that it may get a better rating than the championship game, because fans will be starved for football by that time. I guess I understand the reasons why NDSU and/or UM passed on this, but I think they're missing an unprecedented opportunity for some national exposure. The trouble with the FCS playoffs is that they're played right in the middle of the FBS bowl season, and those games get all the attention from fans and all the network hype. This FCS Kickoff game will be the only show in town, and I think people will tune in just to get a football fix, after seven months of deprivation.

I don't hate EWU at all. They've earned my respect on the field.

I don't think NDSU really needed the exposure after their championship trifecta and their signature win over Kansas State last season, but yeah, the Griz could use some positive publicity. Of course, losing badly to NDSU wouldn't exactly bring that about...

Ya, I highly doubt gameday would come, just a wish I guess. No other games that day to talk about and it would be risky in terms of what kind of crowd would show up, could be pretty small compared to what they are used to .

  Gotta applaud this, pretty funny

Just to throw this out there, but I don't think it ever was an issue of NDSU/Montana *OR* Eastern/Sam Houston for ESPN. ESPN originally approached Eastern's AD discussing participation in one of two opening weekend games. The plan was to have an Eastern game and a Western game. The problem was that there was no marquee inter-regional game played in the East, so they instead looked at going to the Midwest. However, the Eastern/Sam Houston matchup was always to be part of the schedule contingent on NCAA approval. In fact, the game is actually being played in the time-slot that was supposed to be allocated to the Eastern regional game.

This isn't something that came to fruition over the course of the last couple of weeks; this was being discussed as of late August last year.

You are half right. They approached UM and NDSU first. The decision was mutual between the schools. Anybody that thinks ESPN would rather show EWU/SHS over NDSU/Montana is on some illegal shit.

We really don't care who was "approached first." The first college game of the season will be broadcast live on ESPN from Cheney. End of story (at least the story anyone outside of MT will care about.)

But I'm sure they'll put together a great video package on how they wanted UM first, featuring sweeping panoramas of the ultimate cathedral of sports that is WA Griz, interspliced with footage from the 2001 season.

You are on said illegal shit if you think ESPN originally wanting your game wasn't due 95% to NDSU.

And the Griz mutually agreed to turn this down for what reason...

and if thats the case someone should be fired...
