Base Defense Scheme Change?

I know the chances are pretty slim, but nonetheless wondering how likely it might be? I am wondering with lack of DT and no additional confirmed DT signings yet, could we be changing to 3-4? The GRIZ seem to have an over abundance of quality LB's as well. Barring this signing day bringing in DT help, as of now it looks like our personnel might be better suited to the 3-4 defense than the 4-3. How is our current personnel suited for a change to 3-4 (numbers aside)?

My hope is we add the needed DT depth, and don't have to make any changes in our base defense. Right now if we were to have any injuries at DT, it would make things pretty difficult for our defense. DT's/NT's take a beating by the nature of the position. In a 4-3 it is nice to have 4 or 5 guys in depth. In a 3-4, 3 or 4 guys in depth.

I am not too concerned about our LB's being able to make the transition. They are all versatile and pretty athletic. My concerns are more with DL being able to transition. Are our DE's versatile enough to effectively play 3-4?

I hope to hear some opinions from those with a defensive background.

Correct me if I'm wrong..but Ty Gregorak is still our defensive coordinator right???????

Im ASSUMING our defense will be the same hes ran the last few years....AMIRITE

Man people are panicking on this site this week!

True that Ty is still the DC, but that does not mean things will be exactly the same on defense. Even with a holdover DC, the new staff may want to add some new wrinkles...albeit a change to a 3-4 is highly doubtful.

I think people missed the start of my post. It started with "I know chances are slim". I am sure there will be changes to Ty's base 4-3. Based on the little Stitt did say about defense, it sounds to me he will be wanting Ty to be more aggressive with more press coverage.

People are not panicking. It is being concerned about having DT depth at this point. If we don't have the depth, coaches have to think of alternate strategy to make up for lack of depth at a position. Ideally, we sign 2 DT's and all this is moot.

Even if we don't sign two DT's on signing day doesn't mean we won't bring in players this spring/summer. I would think the coaches are aware of what positions are in need of depth.

Current Roster:

DE:

Derek Crittenden - Sr
Tyrone Holmes - Sr
Addison Owen - Sr
Aschan Richards - Sr
Ryan Johnson - Jr
Evan Miksich - RsFr
Nick Mertes - RsFr

(Also rumors of some of our TEs moving to DE, not entirely sure who, there's Ralston, Sprunk, Jones, & Tilleman)

DT:

Caleb Kidder - JR
Zach Peevey - JR
Bo Harris - JR
Nate Bradley - SO
Kyle Davis - RsFr
Jamal Wilson - Sr (converted)

-------------------

Finally - twitter is not the be-all / end-all. Did you guys ever consider we may have one ore more D-line commits that just haven't announced it on twitter or don't even use twitter? I know it's easier to just predict the end of the world here but lets wait and see what signing day brings us, shall we?

As I was informed in a previous thread, there is no way possible that a kid would verbal to a school and not post it on social media...it is almost like a requirement or something...

I think it's good topic to discuss. Who knows whether a change to the base defense is even needed yet. But this is a fan board for Griz football. I'm pretty tired of the none football that's discussed on here every day.

That said, I hadn't heard of Wilson being converted to a DT. Looks like we're good at DE. I could see a couple others in the future being converted there as well.

Funny how when you post something like this you just assume everyone will know it's sarcasm or tongue in cheek but when someone else does it they're "bad fans".

It sounds like the defense will be much more aggressive under Coach Stitt. If I remember right at his press conference he stated that the defense will play press coverage as it's base defense. He wants the ball back fast for the offense.

I LOOOOVE this too. I love defenses that take the fight to the opposing team...theyre always the most successful and feared. Also the press coverage... THANK YOU LORDDDDDD FINALLY. there is nothing worse than watching corners play 5-10 yards off the line...OMG nothing drives me more insane....aggressive physical defense baby...I like it.

I would tend to say NO. Finding a 3-4 NT is even more difficult than finding DT's at this level.
That was Clark. He gone. That may answer your question.

You could also argue that we're in the BigSky and not the Missouri Valley and that rush ends and secondary players are more valuable than a NT in this conference.

I agree with you here BLGF. What is a fire hydrant like Kenyon clark gonna do vs ISU or EWU? 6-1, 320? Too slow to get to the QB before he unloads. Now come post season we WILL have to stop the run, but we gotta get there first.

Alpha may know his posting stars on Egriz but he never new Gregorak's defense was coached Delaney's way and not his. Ty is an aggressive minded coach that was held to Delaney type of defense much to his dislike. Yes, he loved Delaney but he worked FOR Delaney. Watch our defense in 2015 and note the change.

I do know the coach was looking at a few drop downs on defense. Will wait to see if any come and if any are DL.....
