Okay. I know some of you dislike Engstrom. I get that. But please explain how the F-CK he is at all responsible for lack of effort, lack of focus and players not coming out ready to play??
Lack of effort, lack of focus and not being ready to play are direct evidence of a lack of effective coaching and/or poor coaching. Engstrom wrongly fired a great coach and hired a great guy that is not a good head coach. That head coach put together this coaching staff that has lead this team down the trail of mediocrity. And I am not sure that he is smart enough to correct his mistake...or even see that it was a mistake, for that matter.EverettGriz said:Okay. I know some of you dislike Engstrom. I get that. Yep ... it is a testament to JJ and the other leaders on this team that the Griz "are still in the playoff hunt." As for the O-Line ... I suppose they want to do the job -- to protect Jordy and consistently open holes for the backs. But, whether they are lacking in physical skills, under-sized, poorly coached, or whatever ... they just cannot get it done, consistently.go96griz said:IdaGriz01 said:Sadly, we will probably never really know how good JJ could have been. While he was (it seems clear) recruited to run a different offensive scheme, IMO he has the physical skills (and desire) to adapt to, and run, the scheme he's in (stuck with?). I'm sure the O-Linemen want to protect him, and execute the plays properly, they just cannot do so consistently. Result: JJ makes quick (sometimes bad) decisions because experience has taught him (painfully) that he cannot rely on his line to protect him.RobGriz said:Correction. JJ is great in the offense he was brought here to play in just not so much in the 3 yds and a cloud of dust offense Mick wants to run. Especially not behind the sieve like O line he is being forced to play with.Griz Voice of Reason said:In a nutshell at a macro level:
1) Our past hubris caused us to rest and allow the culture to get out of hand.
2) We drank our own koolaid.
3) Leadership has struggled with athletics and complicated matters with these one year contracts.
4) Mick is not the guy.
5) JJ was over rated.
How quickly we forget. JJ had a tremendous season just last year in this same offense with a nearly season long shoulder injury. He is our best qb since Craig Ochs and it's not close. He just happens to play behind the worst Griz O-line I have seen since I started watching Griz football a little over 30 years ago. It is a testament to JJ that we are still in the playoff hunt. A total shame that a load of talent is wasted on this team because the o-line is horrible.
I have no agenda either. But I do not believe that this is a great coaching staff. I believe we have a bunch of talented kids on this team but the talent on the sideline is suspect. The fact that o line recruitment has been an afterthought has lead to us having one of the worst offensive lines I can remember and considering our O line has always been a point of pride at least in recent years, that is unacceptable. As I said Mick is a great guy, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that feels otherwise and I believe, a great position coach. But his inability to adapt to the talent and strength of the players on this team is also proof that he is not head coach material.EverettGriz said:I think the point could be argued that Pflu is a great coach. He had one terrible season and one good one here. And he hasn't held onto a job since. That said, I agree Mick isn't the guy to take UM back to the top. But he rescued the program from a shit pile, none of which was his doing. Then he put up the same damn regular season mark Pflu did.
For those of you who feel Robin shouldn't have been fired after going 10-2, hoe could you justify firing Mick last season??
Let's let the next few weeks play our before we all assume what Engstrom will do. It seems to me that with the academic center and the new locker rooms that the dude absolutely cares about the program. But then I don't have an agenda.
EverettGriz said:But Rob, the OLine playing now we're recruited by Pflu. We have a true frosh good enough to start, but we don't have any talented juniors or seniors. That's all on Pflu, not Mick.
You're right we're in great shape. All is well in Grizland. Maybe Mick will get another extension so we can continue down this road of high level football where the GRIZ are a (barely) middle of the pack team. Yay mediocrity.EverettGriz said:He has recruited the OLine. As I said, we have a true frosh he brought in whose good enough to best out the juniors and seniors Robin recruited. Has he done enough of it? I dunno. Ask me in 4 to 5 years.
And what does OLine recruiting have to do with Engstrom? That's the Q I'm asking.

So true. Great times are ahead. The incoming recruiting class looks fantastic. The weight/locker rooms project is about to break ground, and its a game changer when it comes to recruiting. I believe after Mick retires at the end of the season Haslam is going to hire a guy who will energize Griz Nation. I just cant for the life of me understand the people who think our success is over. Jesus people wake the f*** up!!!! Good times are ahead. GO GRIZ!
Exactly what agenda do you think I have?EverettGriz said:Hammer said:grizpack said:I prefer to think that we are about 3 weeks away from a brand new successful era at UM. Great post. But it's not in line with "The Agenda", Hammer.
I wish I had the faith in them that you do. Until they prove otherwise I can't believe it. I believe that they feel football is just a real "neat" thing to do on Saturday. Not sure why you're arguing with me if we agree?EverettGriz said:Clearly, Rob, you're either learning challenged or purposely disregarding what I've said:
No, I'm not happy. But I also understand a team can't win the NC every year.
Yes, I think it's time for a HC change.
I also think it's well in the works.
I also think practical evidence suggest UM's leadership cares about and understands the importance of athletics in general and football specifically.

Absolutely right Hammer. Despite my "agenda" I don't think our success is over by a long shot. Just a new head coach away!Hammer said:grizpack said:I prefer to think that we are about 3 weeks away from a brand new successful era at UM.
