Backup QB

SSH is a better passer than McKinney, end of story. He always will be. I know people on here have wet dreams about BG but the one thing he has is size. The rest seems pretty average to me so far.

I know this is eGriz and the "one game changes everything" mentality......but that not the real world.

Coaches put the 2nd best QB in the backup spot. You've got to be kidding me if they actually thought, "Hey, let's put Shay in over Trent even though Trent is better in our system right now."

Keep in mind this system does use some mobility from the QB but not nearly as much as it once did. Now it's pocket presence, reading defenses, throwing strength and throwing accuracy. Shay is ahead of Trent right now. I refuse to believe the coaches would put SSH over Trent "just because". C'mon man.

I believe you are right b/w,,,is jj really that much better than our back ups??? if so, we are s.o.l. if something happens to jj....the drop off is dramatic...

Smithwick-Hann played well at UND last year, nearly led a comeback. He deserved to play today. Next week, we'll see.

No he didn't.

Why didn't he deserve it?
Why does Gus deserve it more?

Because SSH is not a good qb.

And yet he is currently the #2 QB on the depth chart and Gus and Simis are not listed. It seems your opinion is baseless. SSH may or may not be a good QB, but he seems to be ahead of everyone but JJ in the eyes of.the coaches, but I am sure your background in grading QB's is much more extensive.

JJ is THAT much better than everyone's back ups. And in many cases, their starters.

How is an opinion baseless? It's just that.... an OPINION!

If SSH is our #2 this year, we should stop exposing JJ to any read option plays the rest of the year. I think I saw us run read option twice yesterday with JJ keeping the ball once for an 8 yard gain.
It just isn't worth letting JJ be exposed out of the pocket.
JJ is wrecking havoc on defenses running pro style and mixing in shotgun and play action. Let's stick with that and keep him upright throughout the season.
Great Win Montana!
Go Griz!

I believe that MD does favor SSH over TMck for whatever reason. I see TMck being more capable of duplicating what JJ does more so than any other QB on the roster. But SSH has more chemistry with our receiving corp and that would give him the edge in my book.

Personally I would play them both if something happen to have to Mr Johnson. It gives you as complete a QB as we could have under the circumstances. This team looks vicious if we can stay healthy & pissed at the world.

Go Griz

The new vertical passing game is perfect for JJ and this corps of lightening fast receivers. As an ex-Delaney detractor I'm thinking the guy has a developed a bit of killer instinct in his aged veins...that late 2 point conversion smacks of somebody who's watched too much Chip Kelly...

The coaches are human and issues like Shay is a smart football guy, loyal to the coaching staff, a great teammate, an upperclassman and pays his dues can trump the fact that he throws rainbows and that you have to drive stakes to see if he's moving. After last year, I think this staff is paranoid about mistakes and they view SSH as less prone. While I'm not in agreement with the priority, that's my thoughts on why.

I think the ST coach was pissed that UND was overloading to block the kicks and if they're going to do that, there can be consequences. It will help to keep future opponents from pinning their ears back to try to block kicks.
