Such a lowlife kick in the gut that "Cowboy Joe" did to the Griz would have been better served if he had left right before the Eastern Washington game 11/16/2002 than to carry on the discreet charade. Allowing what was left of the Griz Coaching Staff to concentrate on the games at hand that were left in the season. What "Cowboy Joe" did to the Griz resulted in the 2007 recruiting Class that could only sign six high school players and not much else, didn't exactly impress me; and of those I can only remember two that stuck around for four years: Ryan Fetherston and Jeff Larsen.
How did a guy who left in 2002 have anything to do with a recruiting class 5 years later?
As stated,.."What "Cowboy Joe" did to the Griz resulted in the 2007 recruiting Class that could only sign six high school plalers and not much else." O.K., I'll accept the fact that that statment is up to interpretation and subsequent events, recruiting classes, were allowed to be as large as they were because of the lack of a 2002 recruiting class of any significance considering the "numbers" involved, not the quality of those that stuck around from that class.
In 2003, Bobby Hauck's first year, there were 34 freshmen listed, as best as I can count; some redshirts and mostly right out of high school < http://egriz.com/football/yr2003/montana-grizzlies-football-roster/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
22 sophomores along with 15 juniors and only 12 seniors, Not much to worry about on making certain there are enough bodies around to fill whatever positions are needed.
Then comes 2004 and there are about 41 freshmen. http://www.egriz.com/football/yr2004/montana-grizzlies-football-roster/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ...but only 11 sophomores listed along with 13 juniors and 19 seniors. Some transfers and some redshirts, but a mighty small sophomore contingent that I believe IMHO was a result of the 2002 recruiting Class that Glenn put together. 41 freshmen players are a lot of new and redshirt players combined to make up one class but I would surmise that it was necessary in order to fill in the roster and have enough players around to fill in as necessary.
In 2005 39 freshmen with about 23 lasting four years or so. A good recruiting class < http://www.egriz.com/football/yr2005/montana-grizzlies-football-roster/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ...but with only 12 seniors and only 15 juniors along with about 22 sophomores. Again, with some transfers that came in taking up roster spots along with the holdovers from previous years, but still a very good class of new recruits that help get the Griz to the NC in 2008 and 2009; but an awefully young team at this point, as I would say, because, still, the 2002 recruiting class was so small in production subsequent years had to fill in where 2002 failed.
37 freshmen listed in 2006 with only 12 seniors and 20 juniors along with 21 sophomores < http://www.egriz.com/football/yr2006/montana-grizzlies-football-roster/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I would suppose it is a combination of Bobby Hauck as a first time Head Coach on the recruiting trail as well that contributed to 2007, along with the initial 2002 class being so meager; I'd have to agree, it wasn't completely Glenn's fault, but I can't say it wasn't a majority of the case, but it greatly contributed to subsequent recruiting classes being larger than normal resulting in 2007 being but six or seven at most. This, a combination of transfers that did or didn't pan out, and incoming freshmen that stuck around for four years. I can understand the larger than normal recruiting classes from 2004 on to 2006 since FCS only allows 63 while the FBS allows 85. And we need to have players on the field, whether they're seniors, juniors, sophomores or redshirt freshmen. The Athletic Department would be somewhat taken aback it the UofM football program couldn't field enough players to play a game. Not good for PR.
I used to be able to secure access to the 2007 roster but I can't acquire anything other than the 2001 roster each time I try. But, as memory serves me correctly, the recruiting class and incoming freshmen for that year was mighty small in comparison; at least in comparison to previous years of 34, 41, 39 and 37 freshmen needed to fill in the ranks from 2003 through to 2006.
