Appy Moving On Up...And Georgia Southern...

Why can't App State be in the playoffs this season? If I recall Old Dominion and Texas State could still be in the playoffs despite moving up.

Once you announce your move you're in a transition phase, which means ineligible for the playoffs.. so no AppSt and GSU in the playoffs this year.

I believe these schools will not start increasing their athletic scholarships, and this is one of the reasons that the ncaa rule makes them ineligible for the playoffs.

Per NCAA rules, App will have to play at 68 scholarships in 2013.

So there will be 5 new scholarships initially. A few may be given to walkons, and 1 or 2 may go to transfers.

For those of you who think you are going to move from the Big Sky straight to the MWC one day are delusional as can be. Ask Appy fans what they thought about CUSA and how they would get in.

1. CUSA, MWC, MAC, SB aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

2. With the new IA playoffs I think you will see more and more of the power 5 no longer playing IAA schools, the strength of schedule to make it in won't allow them. Making those schools who rely on payday games rethink keeping football.

3 IAA isn't dying, but it is and will continue to become less visable. I give it 5 years and the complete playoffs and the championship game will be an exclusive to ESPN3.

You really only have a few choises. 1) You can stay put and play N. Colorado and South Utah University and be on TV maybe once a year or 2) You can try and move up and play former rivals and hope in 6-8 years the MWC gives you a spot.

It's fools gold gentlemen! Bleacher Report did a piece this time last year, Top 25 programs that they would love to see move to FBS. I am of the opinion that the teams within this list are the exact reason to stay FCS.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1199540-25-non-fbs-teams-we-want-to-move-up-in-college-football" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These programs generate a great deal of interest, excitement, revenue & TV appearances. These programs have an equitable opportunity to "play" in a championship post season tournament. The FBS playoff structure will look very familiar to FCS in 10-15 years. It's proven & will deliver NFL type broadcast format!
= $$$$$

The "move up" trend isn't just to FBS. There's been pretty good flow of lower division schools joining FCS--one of them is now a two-time FCS champion. There will certainly be more to come. Our pond hasn't become smaller since the 90s because the new arrivals have been pretty steady.

The one thing about FCS, is you can actually "move up" to FCS or just create a program from scratch and be instantly competitive for a national championship. You can also find a conference to accept you fairly easily if you want to go FCS. PSU, UNC, UND all found a home in the Big Sky more easily than UM would ever find a home in the Mountain West.

Look at Central Arkansas, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Old Dominion, to name a few that made it into the playoffs within just a few years of joining FCS. Something a new FBS school has never done.

There will be new FCS schools as UM's former playoff opponents move on.

So, out of the 25 programs you say are the reason to remain FCS:

Gone FBS already:
App State
South Alabama
Georgia Southern

Looking to go FBS:
Villanova

Havent been to the playoffs in 20 years:
The Citadel

Is in dire financial straights, and talking about dropping football:
South Carolina State

Dont even participate in playoffs, because they think theyre too good for you:
Princeton
Yale
Harvard
Penn

In Division 2:
Grand Valley State
Valdosta State

The FCS or its equivalent will not disappear because it allows those schools to be D1 in all sports. The NCAA would have to completely rewrite and reorganize its divisions to accomplish what some of you are suggesting.

That is what I believe will happen. The only question is if it's 3 years or 5 years from now.
The big dogs will dictate what THEY want and threaten to leave if they don't get it.
Then the NCAA will codify it so they don't let the big dogs slip away from them.
:ugeek:

Sounds good in theory. I remember thinking similarly back in 2001, when Alfred White (former SoCon commish) worked hand in hand with Doug Fullerton and Greg Sankey in trying to get the NCAA to help promote I-AA. Twelve years ago.

The next time the NCAA does something to truly help the FCS level of football, will be the first time.

Most of the longterm ASU and GSU fans grew weary of the wait. I've been a I-AA fan since 1984, but you finally get to a point you can't wait any longer.

Will miss the division, but it was time to move on.

Sadly, UM won't be moving to FBS. We have an inept president, inexperienced AD and ruthless political parasite pulling the strings. None of these are not good news for UM athletics.

This is most-likely true.

But that doesn't mean that the FCS landscape won't look a WHOLE lot different in a few years. Welcome to DII.

And this conversation HAS to be more than just about football. What about the other sports, particularly basketball, where Montana has had a great deal of success. Do we really want to our peers to be Western Oregon, Central Washington and Grand Valley? No thanks.

Agreed! All the more reason to get the hell out of where we are, no??

And its more than just about sports. All we here on here is football and sports impact. How about the chance to be with our peer schools on an academic level. Currently maybe 2-3 schools in the Big Sky are. No one ever talks about how that would affect our finances. The world is about more than football.

Great point, Or. As the old saying goes, you are who you associate with.

I just read all of the posts here and it is really nauseating... Can someone summarize this for me in a format so I don't get another migrane...?? :puppy:

1. App State & Georgia Southern are moving from FCS up into FBS.
2. App State is overshadowed by North Carolina, NC State, Duke, E. Carolina, Coastal....
3. Georgia Southern was always the red head step child of Georgia, now upstart Geo State passes them up.
4. So it is a matter of "prestige" moving into a bottom feeder conference creating the illusion of parity.
5. Some on eGriz have p*nis envy and perceive these moves as "putting on their big boy pants".
6. Some on eGriz regret that we haven't jumped into the ranks of Idaho and New Mexico St.
7. Some on eGriz forgot moving up requires about $15 to $20 million today (adding additional sports, more scholarships, more new and expanded facilities, more staff, higher salaries...).
8. Some on eGriz forgot moving up would also require an additional $5 million or so each and every year to maintain the expanded athletics required.
9. Some on eGriz seem oblivious that the Sun Belt, Conf USA, MAC, etc... is about to be demoted out of the real FBS and become the "new" FBS Division II of college football.

That pretty well sums up what has happened and the reactions you're reading here. So if you have an extra $30 million or so to pony up the Griz could also jump up to join the new FBS Division II. Or, we could wait about three more years and join them without many of these unnecessary expenses.
:ugeek:

NICE someone (else) who actually is informed on what it takes to move up & understands what it really is!
Points 3-9 are especially valid points of emphasis. I applaud your insight & your position. I am NPB & I approve this message.

BTW I made a reference to BR...I don't believe I Quoted it. You are probably one of those people that cant understand why coaches don't want practice video on this site. Epic Intelligence...
