Any Post Season for Griz or Lady Griz?

I don't know what the issues are here, but Robin Selvig has found a nice sweet groove at Montana, and the Ladies are neither going to fall out of that groove, or ever rise above it. Early on, back in the Shannon Cate era, it seemed Robin had a chance to put Montana's program on the national radar. But Robin chose to create a program that represented the state, or at least the Northwest, and so has limited not only his staff but also his recruiting basically to Caucasians (sadly) and Native Americans (bravo!). So: Big Sky power? Definitely. Big Dance? One-and-done.

The last time the Ladies were in the Big Dance, I listened carefully as the selection committee on national TV reviewed the teams, thinking Selvig's accomplishments would at least be cited, and Montana would be mentioned as a dangerous lower seed. Neither was the case; Selvig was completely ignored.

I both appreciate what Selvig has accomplished at Montana, and welcome a new era for Lady Griz basketball under a new coach.

I am assuming you would want those type of players it just seems that the L Griz do not recruit them as Selvig does not run a fast paced offense. Very deliberate in walking the ball up court. Half court offense is what he runs. You recruit the players that fits your offensive scheme. A lot of minority players tend to be quick and athletic and are more adept in a faster paced offense then the L griz like to run. The difference in the tempo of the game will throw the whole team out of sync if not everybody is on the same page. Sac is a good example of a quick paced offense and defense.

Yet back in the Shannon Cate era, we had a black guard, Vicky Austin, who was terrific (until she got hurt), and whom Shannon credited with being an integral part not only of Montana's success but of Shannon's success. Same offense, right?

Vicki Austin

I am not familiar with her was she a point or shooting guard. And if Shannon feels that way it is a mystery why a guard of her caliber ended in that era.

Sac is a good example of a quick pace offense/defense but the LGriz split with them this season. To me you take what the defense gives you, if you can run you run if you can't then you set your offense up and run it. So I kind of disagree that minority players tend to only play for teams that get up and down the court, you have to run set offense (you take what the defense gives you) and I feel that is what the LGriz do. But it would be nice to have quick, fast and athletic players.
