You guys are great at one thing on this board and that is trashing anyone that may point out a flaw in the Griz program. Your really in denial if you think losing four schollies will not hurt your depth. Go down your roster and see how man you quality players you lose after this season. Ask Delaney about the loss of scholarships and I am sure he will tell you it has a big effect. And to think that recruits don't look at how long they think the Coach may be around your being totally naive. Would you want to go into a program where there probably is going to be a new coach within a couple of years that may bring in a completely different system and new position coaches? How do you attract good assistant coaches if need be with this situation? You guys have blinders on and are way to sesnsitive.
I agree, this thread is nauseating. Let the games be played and then we will see who knows about football. All this talk means nothing. The proof will be at the end of the season when the results are in.
Or, looked at another way, you guys try to blow everything out of proportion and make up, to try to show the UM will be bad and MSU will be good. For example, UM is not losing schollies for 4 years. Just 3. Delaney is not way into his 70's. Delaney is not the interim coach. He is the regular head coach.
Most UM fans probably agree that the loss of schollies will have some impact, and Delaney's age can be used as a factor by some competitors. In my view, the age factor is less than the fact that Delaney has a nice friendly personality and kids like him, and Ash, while a nice guy, is boring and uninspiring. This Ash information comes from former Cat players who played for him, by the way.
In recruiting, a few players may care about the coach's age and the system used, but most don't. Have you ever heard of a player choosing MSU or UM because of the defense. For that matter, who chose one of those schools because of the offense. I assume there have been some, but none come to mind.
Recruits are influenced more by the success of the program (i.e. championships and playoffs), game day atmosphere (the stadium and the crowd), how they feel about the coaches whom they've met, how they liked the other players and recruits, etc.
Some other points. The loss of schollies are a negative and will have some impact, but MSU and many other schools have survived loss of schollies just fine. Delaney is 70; Ash is 62. There's no assurance that Ash will be around long term. Moore, the former App St coach was in his mid-60's when he left. Did Moore's age prevent App St from recruiting well, because recruits were concerned he would no longer be the coach and the system would change? MSU has had a very good qb since he was a frosh. Has MSU been unable to recruit good qb's because they have a good young qb who would likely start for 4 years? It may have influenced some kids, but MSU seems to have survived just fine.
If UM has a nice season, and I believe they will, this will show that UM is back--and recruits will be attracted to UM's success.
Once again, it looks like some of you Cats never played the game, and certainly were never recruited for college football, and for those and other reasons, you don't understand how recruiting works and what attracts recruits to programs.
