An email I sent to Royce Engstrom today re:Mick Delaney

Royce just wrote me back:

Thank you, Brint. I appreciate the feedback and will give it serious consideration. I had a good meeting with the Coaches the other day and they indicated the same message.

How can this decision be made without an AD in place? If we had one in place, I would agree with extending Delaney through the 2013 season. It also depends on who is showing interest in the job, and when those showing interest maybe available. I actually agree with Kemajic, on who would be a great candidate, if the offense proves to be in place. I would love Rosenbach be considered, along with Ty (still has some proving to do away from the field).

As for candidates outside of the program, I want to hear names of candidates, before extending Delaney. For me, I think our efforts should be on getting the right AD in place. One of which, I hope is not in house. WE need someone for AD, capable of building the program in a transition to a higher level. It is a matter of time, before there is more separation in NCAA football, and we have to be prepared for having a dynamic leader at AD for that time.

It is a little too soon to make this kind of decision.

I agree removing the "interim" tag would be in the best interest of the Program. If not, I hope a winning season will accomplish the same outcome. As a parent of an incoming freshman it would make me feel more at ease with my son's situation. This is even more important for the 2013 class.Thru all the recent turmoil, (including the loss of Coach Beers) McCauley has not had ONE second thought about coming to Montana. Maybe its because we've seen these kind of issues happen in the Iowa Football Program and understand the actions of a few can affect so many in a negative way. At the end of the day, I believe Montana Football is in good hands under the leadership of Coach Delaney. Make no mistake the Todd's are excited about being a part of Griz Football Family!

I so love it when parent's of a player post, and give support. Thank you. :thumb:

i would have to agree with silvertip, but at this point i don't think engstrom has a choice but to remove the interim tag. How do these assistants coach and interview at other universities at the same time? i think you take the lumps(if there are any) for a couple of years and then find a solid young coach. I dont think rossenbach is the answer. if he is such a hot commodity, why hasn't he moved up in his career? he last coached in 2009.

thanks brint for being pro active and writing the email....i also believe the 18 month contract to be vital...it gives the program stability and age of this coach is not a factor in my mind...anyway, i believe a three year contract is the longest period of time a contract can be offered anyway, by then someone else on the current staff may be ready for the head job...

Royce,

Good afternoon. Amidst all of the chaos and ensuing events that occurred at the time of Robin Pflugrad and Jim O’Day’s non-renewal/termination I had emailed you a suggestion to contact Mick Delaney to be made the football team’s interim head coach. You took time later that day to write me back quickly, shortly after Mick was announced the interim, to inform me and thank me for the contact sent.

Through the spring and at GSA events all over the state I’ve been continually impressed with Mick as our interim head coach. He appears to have a more hard-nosed approach to discipline (or he has at least stated as such). He’s shown to be an excellent communicator to the fan base and has helped to ease a lot of uncertain feelings and nerves. Additionally through a few players and their parents I’ve been told that they share similar feelings – they like Mick’s leadership and he’s helped keep our student athletes focused and together as a team.

While the UM begins its process to hire a new AD I would ask you to consider removing Mick’s interim title and make him the head coach of the Montana Grizzlies. Additionally, I would ask you to consider giving him a contract that would run through the end of the 2013 season, essentially an 18 month contract at this point. I ask you to consider this based on these points:

1. The employment of the assistant coaches and the security of their families rely upon a steady job for the head coach. Knowing they have at least this year and next year would help ease concerns of those employed as football staff and coaches. This is an excellent staff of coaches with strong community ties. They pour their hearts into making our football players better men on and off the field and I believe deserve some better security.

2. Most of the juniors and seniors on this team have now played for 3 coaches in the last 4 years (Hauck, Pflugrad, Delaney). An 18 month extension for Mick would ensure that most would not run the risk of possibly playing under another new coach at this time next year. All of the current players on the team respect and respond to Mick, he appears to be the right fit for this group.

3. This year’s recruiting process has to be challenging as families of 17 and 18 year old young men meet with the current Grizzly coaches who cannot tell these families for sure if they’ll be employed at the UofM come the start of 2013. I can imagine it must be tough for a young man to commit to a school that currently doesn’t have a longer-term plan in place for its coaching needs. Mick has commented that “he’d like to be the head coach for 2-3 years,” this is a nice statement but it holds little weight without a contract in place – signing Mick and giving him a contract through 2013 would help make his commitments to prospective student athletes rock solid.

Thank you for time and consideration in this email.

Sincerely,

Brint Wahlberg

WWGFD Did you cc G Florio on that email? I'm just sayin....

Write another lame article over a dust up 40 years ago that really has no relevance to the recent situation.

Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Great email Brint and I completly concur. I was very impressed with Coach D at the Great Falls event. And I agree that he will bring a little stronger discipline attitude to the team. He is not padding his resume' for the future but jumping in to make the Griz a national champion. He has assembled, what appears to be, a great group of coaches. They deserve to have some certainty in their jobs and lives so they can concentrate on coaching. The players deserve to have some certainty in their playing careers. We will know much more after next season and I predict we will be wanting to sign Coach D to a longer contract.

If the Griz stumble I will not hold next years record against Coach D due to all that has happened this off season. But I expect the team to respond in a very positive way and exceed my expectations.

I also see no problem with promoting from within and continueing the "good ole boy" approach at UM. It has worked pretty well for us so far.

I would also like to thank the people who didn't purchase their season tickets that were next to mine. It allowed me to have them and begin grooming the next generation of Griz fans. My children and grandchildren are very happy! Go Griz!!!

If he goes 6 and 5... You guys will all be calling for his head faster than I can say Robin Pflugrad.
...whereas, if he were your coach, you'd nominate him as Coach of the Year.

Yeah... I don't normally pay much attention to anything this troll posts, but all the good will surrounding Mick does remind me of the praise being heaped on Pflu prior to his first season. Shortly before everyone and their mother turned on him

To counter Brint's email, if Engstrom removes the interim tag off of Delaney and gives him an 18-month contract (two seasons) you hinder the A.D. search in my opinion. The new A.D. is going to want to hire his/her own person to coach the most important program in the athletic department -- one that can decide if an A.D. is fired even regardless of wins, as we all know. I think if Delaney were to be extended, it would remove a lot of qualified A.D. candidates, because that individual will want to hire their own head coach.

If Delaney is given an 18-month contract and goes 6-5 next year, the A.D. is then forced to hope that the Griz turn it around next year (and risk another sub-par year) or come up with the money to buy out Delaney and hire the person they want. And if that happens, then the A.D. will be faced with criticism for yet another coach/employee that was bought out --one that he/she didn't even hire. Especially if recruiting goes well and the players respond to Delaney (and stay out of the non-sports headlines).

Getting the A.D. hire right is a more critical decision than extending Delaney another 12 months and risk potential candidates not applying because of that. Once the A.D. is hired, Delaney will have the luxury of having essentially a season-long interview, and if the Griz go something like 9-2 in the regular season and make a playoff run, which is a strong possibility depending on Johnson's status, it would be hard for the new A.D. not to hire him.

The future of Griz athletics, especially the football program, depends on who the next A.D. is, not whether or not Delaney gets an 18-month contract. UM needs to get the A.D. hire right - first and foremost.

Interesting counter-proposal GB04, I don't see any one AD having enough absolute power to be able to bring in "their guy" with the committees, player input, etc that is done these days in many hires. Additionally I don't know if any potential ADs would be looking at this job coming in here with a certain coach in mind - they're probably looking at the bigger picture of UM athletics as a whole. I can't see a candidate saying, "Hire me because I have the perfect football coach in mind." (simplified statement).

Additionally what would that mean for all of our other coaches? (Tinks, Selvig, etc)

No AD worth his/her salt is going to accept this position for less than a 5-7 year contractual commitment. So I expect the next AD will be hired from within. Not that we don't have good internal applicants, it's just that, after what happened with O'Day, we will not likely attract anybody who has actual AD experience without a long-term commitment.

I think folks overestimate the importance of the AD (or for that mater, his actual power) It is the most precarious position in the University especially at the larger institutions. Technically in charge of the coaches, they are less compensated and in attempting to deal with coaches, they often find their efforts trumped by a coach's connections. However, in the case coaching misconduct, often the athletic director will be terminated along with the offending coach. They reality is they are facilitators for far other far more important people. They seldom make their own decisions anymore, nor even in the case of very large athletic departments are they part of the "cabinet" that actually run the college. Even within the athletic department there are positions that essentially don't answer to him despite their "associate" or "assistant" titles. They are rapidly becoming a glorified "clerk" with a fair amount of PR responsibilities. Most importantly he is a lackey to the University president and hadn't better forget it.

I doubt any AD would attempt to take on Selvig and would think twice about Tinks. Its been a long time since we have had a Football coach who carried much weight. Most were just passing through.

As they should be, since Montana isn't the "be all end all" of coaching jobs I'd prefer a coach that views the UM as part of their path to bigger/better things.
