Then why verbal???

You know the saying "There are no stupid questions only stupid people"...

Valid question Ursus1.

Grizindabox thinks he's a genius and knows it all.

He committed because he wanted to be a Montana Grizzly, but when the opportunity presented itself for him to get an opportunity to attend a school that allowed him to pursue his passion for engineering, he took it...not sure it takes a fricken' rocket scientist to figure that out.

I think a rocket scientist would know enough to go to a school that has his major...thus no need to verbal to one that doesn't, but just say thanks but no thanks....

You consider that the kid was OK with a second choice such as Business but then had the opportunity to play at a school that offered his first choice...once again, not that difficult to comprehend...at least I thought....

apparently you would be okay with taking your second choice as a career.....me not so much, but then again I am not as smart as you think you are.

I am assuming you are also not an 18 year old senior in high school trying to balance football scholarships and deciding what you want to do in an academic sense...and I am starting to get that you are not as smart as I think I am...and not even as smart as I know I am...

I just applaud all of you on these boards who apparently were sure of what you wanted to do as a Senior in High School. I sure as hell didn't. Not sure I do now...

Yeah, I'm 61 years old and I still can't find my ass with both hands...

If I could get my college paid for? Yeah...I'd probably let the major take a back seat.

That's good because we don't offer rocket science as a major either.

Ursus made that obvious...

Thanks Mr. Neale for posting, not that it was necessary. You and your son don't owe anonymous Griz fans any apologies or explanation. Alex had every right to verbally commit to UM, and he had every right to change his mind and choose a different path. This is how football recruiting works, and I won't ever begrudge a kid for following what he thinks is best for him. Alex owes himself and no one else. I hope he tears it up at UNLV, and I'm with you, I think Sanchez will do well at UNLV. Will take a while, but he will.

My take. Alex knew he wanted to play college football and get an education. Maybe college was not too affordable and he got a full ride to get his education and took it. He probably hoped he would eventually pick up other offers, but you can't let a free ride pass you by. He had a great senior year and an FBS school offered him. A new coach with new enthusiasm and a hopeful future with a scholarship to get the degree that he thinks he really wanted.

So yeah, he knew he wanted to play football and get his education paid for, but the exact major may have just cleared for him lately. Why keep questioning the kid. He made a choice which he felt was best for him. Good luck and God bless.

Could've been worse....He could've decommitted and went to msu.

They've got an engineering program over there don't they? This is the elephant in the room in this entire wack discussion. And it's just going to be a bigger problem as time goes along. Good kids who do know what they want aren't going to be interested in UM because forestry and environmental studies aren't what they envision themselves doing when the football part of life is over. Need to start working on something viable or puds like me will continue to whine about the one that got away.

Sorry I forgot, whining is one of the cornerstones of an inter web message board. Never mind.

So many other options in Missoula than that. We have a top notch business school. We have Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-med, Education, Law, etc. If a kid wants to be an engineer, then that is part of the game. We will get our share of who we want. Also, look at the MSU roster right now. There are only a handful of engineer majors on their roster.

Good God, we've been losing engineering majors for 100 years...it's not like this is a new revalation. Just be happy for the kid that he gets to play FBS football, chase a degree he actually wants, AND live in Vegas....

Stitt is probably tired of recruiting the engineer type...he wants to reach out and expand his horizons...dabble in the business, pharmacy, and Health & Human Performance type kids

Got it - he's looking for football players. Makes sense.

Some of the ones you listed are post-grad only options. Those typically don't make too much of a difference for where a kid decides to do his undergrad.

I know a lot of UM grads who make far more than any engineer I know. And I live in Seattle, where you can't drop a Starbucks cup and not spill on 13 engineers. If you're choosing a degree solely based on the amount of money you may or may not make, you're probably setting yourself up for (1) failure; (2) a rather boring and unhappy life.

If I am recalling correctly, UM had the mechanical engineering program at least into the 1920s, and still offers a forestry engineering masters degree, which is pretty much "mechanical."

If I had a kid that wanted an engineering degree and to play football in the west, I would push him toward Cal Poly. Far, far better engineering school than either UNLV or msu.
