A new era at UM! Welcome President Shinn!

What a breath of fresh air to have this completely unique, never-before-spoken perspective shared with us. Truly paradigm-shifting.
Anyone who uses Berkeley in their Egriz user name I would assume that they put their academia before sports, but maybe you never heard of Berkeley , are not smart enough to choose another user name or just have a big ego.

Should be interesting to see how things play out over the next couple months. He starts at UM on July 1 and commencement at BSU is May 9. So he's gonna have a period of almost 2 months to evaluate the current state of UM and what he may or may not want to change upon his arrival. I could see a scenario where he makes an AD change, but does he do that this summer? Or does he wait a year?

it looks like Haslam's current 3 year contract runs through June 2026. Good article from Colter a few years ago on Haslam's extension.

“This Agreement expires automatically at the end of the term. Neither party should have any expectation of renewal. However, UM will notify AD a minimum of five months prior to expiration of this contract if non-renewal is intended. If UM notifies AD less than five months prior to expiration of this contract, the contract will continue five months from time of notification and expire at that time.”

BSU's associate-deputy AD was a finalist for the University of Toledo AD position, if he's looking to leave/interviewing for other AD positions is this the time to bring him in. Or, does he give Haslam one year contract with specific goals to meet. Looking at how vocal BSU's fund raising/NIL campaigns have been, you may see more communication from the current AD Dept.

Which would line up the new President deciding on a switch (or not) at AD. UM's fiscal year begins July 1 - hence the July 1 start date for Shinn and Haslam's contract ending June 30.

If I’m not mistaken, I believe BSU’s current AD is a finalist for the Kentucky job. If he were to get it, would the Deputy AD get the Boise job? That might be something to watch too.

For sure - I don't know the exact org structure - does Haslam report directly to University President? If so, that could be one of Shinn's first big decisions as UM President - does UM renew Haslam's contract? If yes, for how long? If no, does a national search kickoff or would he already have a list of folks in mind (like Boise State, or other connections)?

Last I saw reported was he was a candidate, exploring his interest, the deputy AD was a finalist for the university of Toledo AD. BSU is expected to get a new president this summer.

My understanding is that the AD reports directly to the President. Unless something major has changed, it has been that way for decades.

So if I'm reading this correctly then unless Haslam was told back in February that he would not be renewed, then he automatically gets 5 more months on the job. Bodnar left in January so unless Bodnar gave him an extension before he went out the door, then I would say there's no way Haslam was properly notified of renewal/nonrenewal. That means he should be on the job until November 30, and I believe Shinn could decide whether or not to make a change at AD as soon as he starts and then through that period of time.

I'm not advocating one way or another, I'm just trying to make sense of that clause in his contract.

Ah that makes sense. I didn't look at the actual contract. Appears Haslam would be at UM until November 30 at least - unless Haslam decides otherwise.

Haslam will get paid for 5 months......I don't think that would necessarily mean they can't hire someone and just eat the additional cost.

Totally. That provision is almost certainly intended to operate as a severance in practice for situations exactly like this. I wouldn't consider it a barrier to making changes at all. Put another way, I would be surprised to hear that it was intended to play out in the real world like: "Hey, we're replacing you in 5 months, but g'head and do a bang-up job until November 30, fella."
