A little roster update

I believe 4 of 5 seasons the Griz have fallen short of pre-season polling?

Is that right?

If true, that contributes to the expectation deal.

RTD was dumb from the start - very surprised Hauck fell into that. A very good brand, but reeks of overpromising.

Preseason polls are a joke. FCS has less than 5 reporters nationwide that really dedicate any amount of time covering the entire nation. And I would say most of those are regionally biased. Even preseason polls in the Big Sky are irrelevant when not everyone plays each other. Then throw in the transfer portal. You never know how well some of these players will fit in. And do you think any of these small handful of reporters that cover FCS can give a run down of the redshirt freshman that each school has that will see the field this year? They don't go back and analyze games from previous year. They look at player stats and who is returning and they read what others are saying and find a few teams to bandwagon on. This year it is Idaho along with usual teams. The Griz were rated high preseason last year because they ended the previous season playing well (including thumping the Cats) and had Lucas Johnson coming in. Lucas had bad luck with health and that was key in at least two games the Griz lost last year for sure. I believe the Griz addresed a lot of the issues they struggled with last year (ie depth at QB and play calling) and so I think Griz have a much better squad than #14 in the nation. I was listening to ESPN Radio yesterday and one Bama fan called in and was saying it was time for Saban to step down because they haven't won the national title in two years and the game has passed him by.

In 2018 we were picked 4th in the media and 7th in the coaches poll. We finished tied for 6th.

In 2019 we were picked 5th in the media and 4th in the coaches poll. We finished tied for 3rd.

In 2021 we were picked 2nd in both the media and coaches polls. We finished tied for 3rd.

We all know about last season.

For FCS preseason polls, we were picked 24th in 2018, 25th in 2019, 9th in 2021, and 3rd in 2022.

Outside of the whole "RTD" stuff, I still don't know how these polls suggest Bobby specifically was setting expectations higher than he should have been, unless anyone has any quotes or soundbites suggesting otherwise.

So, in the polls, UM finished ABOVE pre-season ranking in 2 of the last 3 seasons. For the veggies, it's like those 2 years never existed.

They don't. Anyone who has listened to his press conferences or interviews, talked to him in person, or attended a function he speaks about the team at will all unanimously say that he doesn't hype up the team. Some of these people are creating their own egriz narrative and acting like it is reality.

Pre-season polls are gospel. I mean, MSU has the banners....

I've been saying that ever since BH 1.0 came to an end. Based only on what my uneducated, never played the game, lying eyes were SEEING. You have put the meat, connective tissue, and skin on my skeletal beliefs. THANK YOU!!! :thumb:

Stat. It's all stats. One season IN A ROW!!!(sarcasm). The upcoming season will prove the grenade chuckers wrong. :grenade: How many coaches, ADs, and fans across the FCS would consider a 8-5 season the beginning of the end? An aberrancy of a season at that.

I'm really, really looking forward to this season for exactly that reason.

I wasn't trying to stir any pot here...just trying to add to context regarding expectations vs reality.

You have to admit RTD was self inflicted, right?

Maybe its just me, but I still like RTD. Shows that we will only accept continue to move toward the level we were previously at. I know you are big on having high expectations, which is totally your right, and obviously Hauck does too. We had one down year, but until last year we had improved results year over year in returning to dominance.

I know...just trying to add some context. There is no question BH was uncharacteristically giddy about the squad last year.

I've never seen him do that...it was a clear variance from his normal and it wasn't helpful. Just my opinion.

Well...RTD means getting to the chipper IMO.

BH has been there, so I can't imagine he thinks it means anything else. Bumped in round 2 or qtrs is not a return to anything.

It is dumb...coaches NEVER over promise...at least the smart ones don't.

From fans? Absolutely.

But I very much remember Bobby saying it was going to take a while when he first took the job.

I still haven’t seen anything to suggest Bobby was over the moon about last year’s team other than that the fans were extremely high on the team.

If you have something, though, I would genuinely like to see it, because I do remember there being something last year, but that may have been something from a Griz fan that never actually happened.

Oh, I agree with you, it does mean getting back to the chipper. I just don't think he ever meant it as being just one year. Even at our height, we were not in that game every year by any means.

I took RTD to mean making steps to get there, which we were very successfully doing until last year. Even Hauck talked about it being longer term plan when he said it. I remember a few years ago him saying that we were on track to his personal expectations.

Obviously everybody, Hauck included, admitted that last year fell short..

Short member fat boy third-string blocking dummy, as told by the REAL all conference Dartmouth DB, Mike Hannigan. Hoops is exposed......... in more ways than one according to an old girlfriend

Who cares what he "promised"? I only care about results, and his were the same as the previous few years........ Not Montana Caliber. More like Bobcat results under the Big Human & Ash.
You must have missed the countless posts since the end of the season where people were angry about the "expectations" that Hauck supposedly set before last season. As far as I can see from actually looking for it, he didn't set any expectations.

and he certainly delivered on no expectations.............

Look at these Hauck boy friends trying to spin this. Everyone knows that Hauck promised to RTD. Stop making yourself look like tools

Ash said it would take awhile too, and look what happened to him. So according to you we should all be satisfied by Hauck's results just because he told us it would take awhile. Priceless. You are such a treasure. Never stop being you.

I accompanied my son today for a round of golf at the Stock Farm. Couldn't play due to spinal surgery. He played with a member of the Griz 1995 NC team, who is a member of the Stock Farm. This former player, who knows many former and current players, says that Hauck's tough-guy attitude doesn't play well with today's players. I already knew that, having heard it from others, and I think most reasonable Griz fans know it too. But it was confirmed by someone who should know. The 2023 is make-or-break for Bobby.
