37

I respectfully disagree. I believe the unofficial rules is graduated from a Montana High School, not born in Montana. I believe if someone really did some research, we could find at least on 37 who graduated here but was not born here.
After a really quick cursory search, 11 of the 17 have a Montana town listed as their Birthplace, six others; Kidder, Utterback, Pitcher, Crebo, Ericson, and Paulson have a Montana town listed as their Hometown. In all cases but one the players birthplace and hometown are the same. The exception being Tim Hauck who was born in Butte but left for a better place, i.e. anywhere else.

Good research.

I rarely post here, I came here 20 years ago to get news about recruits, thank you Paytonlives for your yeomans work in this area. The rest of egriz has been largely disappointing. But I digress…this is going to be very long, but what I have say about the 37 tradition will be made clear. I hate the tradition, I have met Kraig, not impressed…Tim I also met, I like him. My earliest memory of life is on the high line , then the pine hills of eastern Montana, and eventually a valley in western Montana. My father was a teacher and coach, he coached Gary Warhank in junior high, then Jack O’Connor in junior high… the 1971 Baker Spartans who defeated 3M were kids he coached…because my father coached, I got to see players like Willie Weeks, George Yellow Eyes, Oliver Flying, Brent Wilson, Sam McCollum, Pat Donovan, Gerry Ready ( to this day I am jealous of the Laurel Locomotives, their cute cheerleaders in Oshkosh by gosh overalls, doing the locomotive cheer, totally awesome) later, Barney Smart Enemy, Jonathon Takes Enemy, great basketball players. Here is my long awaited point, I am as Montanan as one can get, but, I was I was born in Northeast Washington state, not my choice obviously. I cannot support a tradition that leaves out people who were not fortunate to be born here. Personally, I would run backwards through a brick wall for the Grizzlies. Please, change the tradition or get rid of it.

I respect that post, and most posts on this subject. Not that anyone gives two shits, but here is my take. I was born in a neighboring state. Moved to Montana when I was 7 years old. Grew up a Griz fan. My fist brawl was when I was in HS and was the one they had the 8 decal on the helmets during the streak. Watched Scott Gragg cartwheel off the field after a score. Was recruited by Don Read to play (although I chose a different path), and am as die hard and stupidly superstitious as they come for my favorite college team. I haven’t lived there in years, but am as Montana as they come as well. I love the tradition. Whatever the criteria may be…very few on here know EXACTLY what it entails…be it born, raised, both, 10 years, 3 cousins and an uncle were born here…it’s just that, a tradition. It feels like people are complaining that “it’s not fair” if (insert favorite player) can’t get the jersey. Essentially participation trophy beliefs. 37 doesn’t mean the best player, the best Grizzly, or even the best Montanan. It signifies who the previous player believes represents what Montana is about…using the “secret” Montana criteria. Good grief everyone….it’s not like they sacrifice 4 cows and the neighbors cat to get an answer. Be proud of the tradition. It’s a Montana Grizzly tradition. It’s so good that the little brother copied it with their own twist. In the end, it’s just a damn number. It’s become defensive obviously, Junior deserves it, but I will cheer for them if Junior wears 5 or 37. I will wait and see who it’ll be, just like many on here. I will wear my 37 jersey for every game next year. My kids will get 37 for their club sports teams (their choice). And the sun will still come up because of the tradition. Why is this such a heated debate? Also…yeah, somehow the Laurel girls were always the cutest when we were playing against those guys. Must be the refinery and train water Go Griz!

Hate to break it to you Doc, you are NOT a Montanan. Quit trying to pretend. :werd: :werd: :protesst: :protesst: :stfu: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Didnt Jace Lewis give it to Welnel instead of Robby...

I should have spoken in general terms. Whichever doing the handing down took too long . No offense to Lewis or Welnel. Only the hander down can tell us WHY it took so long. I won't hold my breath waiting an explanation. None of my damn business, actually.

A No. 2 story. Back when kids could be taken onto the field with passes, and stand in the section behind the players, our friend Krista Redpath took my young son onto the field. He was wearing, No. 2/Young. Krista told us that at one one point, my son said: "Krista, look. There's Trey Young. He's wearing my number." We always went down on the field after games and my son would talk to and interact with the players for an hour or so. We had talked to Trey many times. Trey was in Frisco. We saw him at a bar near the stadium after the game. Great guy.

Whew! I thought this was going to take a much darker turn.
EDIT to say: I'm talking about toilet humor. It's pretty much all I have in this stage of my career.

Wow, three pages…maybe this can get to 17 pages, my dark fantasy…I know that the comment about AZ Doc was clearly tongue in cheek…no tongue, no cheek? The hell you say…CDA? You are very wise and versed in egriz, what the hell was PR (hoops) attempting to tell me with his story about Trey somebody??? Maybe I am obtuse, but I didn’t get it…what I do get is that the 37 tradition is okay, but not if under the unwritten rule of not being born in Montana. That is my only complaint. Always has been.

Hoops prefaced his story as a "No. 2 Story". I thought it was going to involve a BM. Not all jokes land.

You started a great thread. To be clear, you're getting pretty good info that it is not a requirement to be born in MT. That is not, and has not, been a requirement.

I was told I was born while my parents were on vacation. Doesn't say much for the decision making process of those two, big road trip so near the delivery date, but I could have been born....a Californian! ARRRGH!!! But, I held out, and took my first polluted breath at St. Pat's.
Born a Griz. Eat your heart out!

My last post about this, how many know the Laurel Locomotive cheer? If you never heard it or witnessed it, you were robbed….whoever first did this at Laurel, congrats…it is so awesome …does anyone know if they still do this? Do the cheerleaders still wear Oshkosh ? I told everyone, I was jealous of Laurel, I won’t identify my high school, other than to say it is dysfunction junction.

I, like both my parents and my maternal grandparents, was born in Montana, as was my daughter (and her husband, and both of his parents). My grandson, on the other hand, was born in Washington, although they returned to Montana when he was three. I admit that I will always feel a little sad that he is the only non-native Montanan among us.

Sask, what is it with you and your Butte bashing? Just curious (being a Butte native myself). Have you actually spent any time in Butte, and if so, what happened that soured you on a whole town?

Butte has taken a lot of punishment from outside observers over the years, some of it deserved...a lot of it, not.

What I want to know is why in the hell Trey wore Two?

I was testing everyone. You caught it. Personally, I like the No. 38 tradition.

I don't like the 37 tradition. I was born and raised in MT. Multiple generations on both my dad and mom's side. Played football at Bozeman high and graduated from there. All-conference in college. Recruited by Griz and Cats. My dad played a bit for the Griz. But I never was given no. 37. In fact, I was never considered.

I know a little about Butte…tremendous sports teams, especially footballl…in the 80s BHS was the bomb in wrestling, it is probably why some jealousy exists because of that… but yeah, the Berkeley Pit brought about jokes like, if the the world needed an rectal exam,, they would insert it at Butte, or Butte, the armpit of the world…I have since grown up and quit looking down on towns who regularly kicked our asses…

CDA, truthfully, you amuse me…but I am not going to turn this into a love fest…I think for most, I made a point…

Hey, don't be shy, we could use a few more love fests around here. CDA, and a couple of others, manage to be genuinely funny in only writing on a very specifically topical message board. That's not easy to do. Give the man his roses.

Honestly, this board is in a much more fun and positive place when I joined a year ago. Part of why I joined was that it seemed like 80% of the posts were just vitriol directed at our coaching staff and players. Nothing wrong with having some kindness and lovefest, it makes it a better place, just like CDA and many other posters do. Its much appreciated.
