2nd scrimmage recap

the defense played the better game today, weather or no weather.....
defensive played with more confidence and focus
gamboa and whitted looked the most improved
lebsock and crittenden look as if they will get some playing time this year, both looked very confident out there today
kose was the most impressive to me today........he was playing with the 1's

these were the stand outs imo today......that being said.......the wind did play against the offense play making so it was advantage defense.......however, they looked like they came to play today...which is not weather related.

The bottom line is this:

In shitty weather, you want your D to dominate. Because really bad weather games are determined by field position and turnovers. If our O struggled against our D today, I'd say that's a GREAT sign. :thumb:

I showed up in time to see Canada TD run, so I missed most of the scrimmage. On the kicks I watched 9 field goal attempts, 5 of them were bad snaps, or mishandles by the holder, and one where no one blocked the edge rusher at all.

When the timing and handling worked so did the kicker in making field goals. Thoses things can be fixed with practice. Defensive line looked dominant and should be the best in the Big Sky..

I didn't see the first scrim.. but you guys all remember Brody McKnight as a freshman, right? There's a reason he got the nickname "Mayday." I don't really remember anyone saying much about him as a soph, and mostly nothing as a Jr or Sr. Why should we bag on a freshman kicker? I mean, really..

Did you really just compare Lider to McKnight? OMG! Mcknight made his PAT's, IIRC he made a few clutch kicks. If you don't see the problem, you should be on the staff. Lider wishes he could be a pimple on McKnights A$$!

Actually McKnight missed PATs his freshman year too. Remember we had Ferriter out there kicking PATs at one point because of it? Since some people seem to have the memory of a brain damaged goldfish around here, let's check the kicker comparisons again to see how our other freshman kickers did:

Snyder
Fr - 16-25 (64%), 7-7 from 20-29, 5-8 from 30-39, 3-8 from 40-49, 1-2 from 50+ (LG 52)

Carpenter
Fr - 18-29 (62.1%), 4-7 from 20-29, 7-10 from 30-39, 7-10 from 40-49, 0-2 from 50+ (LG 49)

McKnight
Fr - 9-16 (56.2%), 3-5 from 20-29, 4-8 from 30-39, 2-3 from 40-49, (LG 46)

Lider
Fr - 15-21 (71.4%), 1-1 from under 19, 7-8 from 20-29, 2-6 from 30-39, 5-6 from 40-49 (LG 46)

In fact if you do a quick search on eGriz you'll find people ranting and bitching about McKnight his freshman year, how it was the end of the world, worst kicker ever, we need a new kicker, etc... And you'll see people point out that even the great Dan Carpenter struggled his freshman year.

FFS people we have this discussion every damn time we have a freshman kicker. And every damn time by the end of their Junior year we are raving about how great they are and forget about their freshman and sophomore years...

220px-Goldfish3.jpg

Using your stats he was 2-6 from 30-39(the area of the field where most FG's are kicked from) that alone should have him riding the pine.

You're really reaching there... He was also 5-6 from 40-49. So back off the bench and onto the field with him!

Seriously, did none of the above actually show you that all of our freshman kickers recently have struggled big time their freshman year? I'm sure I can dig up my post from last year, and the previous years where it also showed they weren't dominating their sophomore years either.

So you want to replace Lider with ANOTHER freshman kicker? Well great.... so we start over?

Kicking in high school is a hell of a lot different than kicking at the college level. Because a kid hit a 46 yard field goal to win a game at the high school level doesn't mean he's the next Carpenter...

Redonkuless1 - Who was the best recent kicker for the Griz that played as a freshman? I'm sure you know where I'm going with this... but I'm curious on who you think was worthy to kick for us as a freshman. Obviously it can't be Carpenter, Snyder, or McKnight since they struggled...so who?

Let's see, bad snaps, interceptions, qb's running for their lives, defense dominating. Hmmm. Is this the Cat practice thread??

I'll have to say, I think we've got a kicker. Not too shabby for a young new kicker. Hopefully they get him up to par on his short kicks and think he'll be good to go. he looks really consistant in all areas except the short/mid range. I like this.

Red~after that scrimmage, you should be much more worried about the vertical passing game than the kicking game. :twocents:
GG... haven't you been reading Brint's reports and all the other Hyperbole coming out of the closed practices? We have the Payton Award winner back at QB!! Even tho he's one-year removed from not playing at all and being the 7th best QB in the Big Sky Conference. You REALLY need to keep up with our talent-evaluators on this board... they're never biased or wearing them Maroon-colored glasses.
BW reports that the wind caused havoc for JJ and Mckinney... makes me wonder if the wind has ever stopped blowing the past two seasons if that's the case!! (or maybe they just have small hands and weak arms... hmmmmmmmmm?)

Griz dogs were subpar, popcorn was too salty, Grizmayor is as big of a douche as he seems on egriz, fireball is fireball no matter where you buy it and bpcats should be banned because he made a thought-out rational post.

Good Lord. It's Spring Ball and the fair weather egriz idiots already have us hopeless.
Spring ball always has problems and these will be worked out. Quit bitching about the frosh and the QBs and the coach. All will be tuned in good time. And as for Dennehy's kicking at Butte, watched him all season and he was only average which made his game winner a true life changing miracle. He is a great kid who will probably get a lot of beers bought for him in this town through the years, but he would probably not be the next Carpenter. You want a game changer from Butte? Get Dallas Cook in Missoula.

Remember the Griz Dynasty started with a Great Kicker(and QB), Does it end with a choke artist?

All right, already. We get it Mrs. Dennehey. The Griz should have recruited your son.

Typical douchebag response....from a douchebag poster........there sure are a lot of kids out there getting punched by other players these days.

Dallas Cook will never be a Griz

That sounds hopeless too. Why not? He may get some FCS offers but heat want to step in and play too. How do you know all this? I know the BHS coach has a Cat connection but I don't see that as a deal maker. I am assuming the kid is a decent student but know nothing about him personally. I do know he dominated AA football like no one I've seen in a while.

FCS football is below him, just ask his dad.

Brint, So you are saying we will be fine...
as long as we only play on calm days, and don't need any field goals. :ugeek:

In spring I don't really think one can forecast if a team will be fine or not - this is a time to implement the playbook and work on depth/progression.

"Calm days" occur more often than not for football games. For those who were there, they could attest - this wasn't just a regular windy day. The gusts were very strong - not a common wind/breeze that we see. Pretty rare occasion. Not saying the team would never play in wind, but I don't really recall ever watching the Griz play in wind as strong as we saw at the scrimmage. Probably a type of weather that occurs maybe 4 or 5 days out of the year total.

Hopefully, we will get to play more than six games in good weather, and as far as QB's being under center all day long, that's why you have sure handed QB's along with five quality RB's two OC's and a head coach that has problems keeping his headphones on his head and boogers in his nose, however a genius at clock management, and field positions situations on coin flips..

Coaching staff didn't show anybody their secrets thus far, although we at least know that the defense can outscore the offense and with just one coordinator.

Good thing it is March and not September.

IMHO, defense will dominate this season and win games.

I think we need a third and perhaps a fourth OC.
