28-2 ... and no first downs

I don';t have a stats book handy. Here's my PROOF that everyone can double-check. Get the boxscore from Sunday's paper out. The Griz had 14 completions yesterday, 6 of which went for TDs. That leaves 8 completions that were NOT TDs. Well look at the stats. We had 10! passing first-downs. Check...and Mate!

After thinking about it, I can see why you would be confused. Don't think of the stat category as"first downs". On your first play from scrimmage it is first down and 10, but you don't get 1 in that stat category at that time. You gain a stat category "first down", once you REACH that said 10 yards. If the stat category were named "line gained", I think it would make more sense,because that is what is being kept.
Going further, even on first and goal from the 1. The "line to gain" is the goal-line. If you reach that line,you gain 1 in the stat category, confusingly titled "first down". The title of the stat is what is mis-leading, but that's how it works.

which wasn't done till the 2nd quarter and we all in the North Endzone were discussing... was that the first time of the game?

Yep, here's conclusive proof of the above:If you look at 8:45 of the 3rd quarter, the Griz scored on first and goal from the 10, and no first down was awarded. Therefore only Offensive TDs scored "within a series of downs starting from 10 yards or more from the goal line" result in statistical first downs.
