28-2 ... and no first downs

At least I don't recall the Griz getting a first down before the score was 28-2. What a weird start to the game, but fun to watch.

Correction. They had 1 first down. An offensive Touchdown is credited as a first down, so Selle to Gratton's TD was a first-down.

holy shit I didn't know that but it makes sense when you stop and think about it.

I have asked several people whether a touchdown counts as a first down, but no one ever has ever been able to answer that. If it does, I stand corrected, but I don't know that it necessarily makes sense.

It doesn't count in the stats as a 1st down, but if it is more that 10 yards, I would consider it one.

yes it DOES count in the stats. I promise you.

I'm going to call a BS on that. The touchdown ends to offense's possession. No first (or second, third or fourth) down follows. Can you cite a rule?

I don';t have a stats book handy. Here's my PROOF that everyone can double-check. Get the boxscore from Sunday's paper out. The Griz had 14 completions yesterday, 6 of which went for TDs. That leaves 8 completions that were NOT TDs. Well look at the stats. We had 10! passing first-downs. Check...and Mate!

After thinking about it, I can see why you would be confused. Don't think of the stat category as"first downs". On your first play from scrimmage it is first down and 10, but you don't get 1 in that stat category at that time. You gain a stat category "first down", once you REACH that said 10 yards. If the stat category were named "line gained", I think it would make more sense, because that is what is being kept.

Going further, even on first and goal from the 1. The "line to gain" is the goal-line. If you reach that line, you gain 1 in the stat category, confusingly titled "first down". The title of the stat is what is mis-leading, but that's how it works.

I stand corrected. I found the game stats showing the offensive touchdowns being counted as first downs at http://filemanager.montanagrizzlies.com/mtgriz3/schedules_and_stats/files/fb/htm/2010/UM-WSC.HTM. My hat's off to Zirg. :thumb:

a "real" first down only happens when the crowd gets to yell "FIRST DOWNNNNNNNNN...... MONTANA" ;)

which wasn't done till the 2nd quarter and we all in the North Endzone were discussing... was that the first time of the game?

SECTION 1—FIRST DOWNS
Article 1. A first down shall be recorded whenever the yardsticks
are ordered forward and/or when a touchdown is scored from scrimmage
(rushing or passing) within a series of downs starting from 10
yards or more from the goal line
, or when a dead-ball foul results in
an automatic first down (see Section 1, Article 6).

hmmmmm, well I apparently stand (partially) corrected too if I am reading this properly. I always thought a TD from INSIDE the 10 yard line was a statistical first-down as well, going by my "line-to-gain" theory. Yep, here's conclusive proof of the above:If you look at 8:45 of the 3rd quarter, the Griz scored on first and goal from the 10, and no first down was awarded. Therefore only Offensive TDs scored "within a series of downs starting from 10 yards or more from the goal line" result in statistical first downs.
Looks like we all learned something here.

I appreciate the props, Rick.
