MBBALL 2025 Big Sky Conference Transfer Tracker

Idaho State got a commitment today from Gus Etchison, 5-11 guard from NAIA Marion College. Averaged 23 ppg as a junior, played 6 games this year before being shut down with surgery. Scored 19 against Indiana before his surgery.

This technically fills all 13 scholarships for ISU, although they would undoubtedly make room for Darling if he wanted to come back. Highly unlikely at this point.
lol hold that thought

Kind of funny - every year I hear talk about men’s basketball in the Big Sky being down or weak - that it’s not like the good old days. Not true.

Our top players head off to schools like Tennessee (Dalton Knecht), Southern Cal (Saint Thomas), Michigan State (Malik Moore), and now Dylan Darling goes to St. John’s to play for old man Pitino. I could list more, like Great Osobor (Washington) and Raequan Battle (West Virginia).

I think you could actually make an argument that the Big Sky is tougher than it was 20 years ago based on the fact that very few Montana kids can make a roster in 2025.

The cats have brought in 3 transfers in the last week. They’ve been busy.
Jaden Steppe was a guy that the Griz were in on for a bit and recruited heavily in HS, and is a really good pick up for the Cats. They are quickly improving their squad. Like the Griz they are going to lean on some guys who didn't get a lot of minutes on the team last year.

MSU has done well, so far, in recruiting the portal. They really needed it and seem to be getting it. I'm not saying that it puts them at the top of the BSC, just that they seem to be getting better.

I would argue that the league as a whole may be tougher, but the gap between the BSC and the power conferences has grown.

The gap is considerable because guys like Darling, Osobor, Knecht etc aren’t sticking around for their whole career. It’s almost like minor league baseball, as far as certain players getting the call to move up.

My issue is with people who think that the league is weaker from previous eras. I’d argue that the low and mid majors get a ton of talent that drops down to find their groove before making it back to the Power 4 level (see Darling, Battle, St. Thomas, Malik Moore).

It's hard to tell much about some of the league's incoming transfers, until we see them in a few BSC games.

The fact that UI is picking up this guy now, tells me that they didn't get their first choices. He certainly looks okay, but just. His shooting splits were quite average, but he did score 16+ per game. He was in foul trouble quite often, so he must play agressive ball. Over two TOs per game is offset somewhat by getting about the same number of assists. Looks like a combo guard on paper.

I think if you're still recruiting the vast majority of your roster this late into the offseason, you're probably in deep shit. Teams like the Griz or Weber who have already filled almost all their spots are the ones that I think are likely to have greater success next season. The longer you wait, the less good options are out there.

the catz picked up a transfer from wisco...big dude but career average is .1 pts/game

Sometimes that's the beauty of money games. The cats played Wisconsin in their season opener and may have gotten a peak at this guy in warm ups. He's been at Wisconsin the last 3 years but has only averaged about 2 minutes per game, primarily in garbage time and has hardly scored. That said, he's an older player so it doesn't hurt giving a guy like this a chance.

Montana is still in the portal market...I don't think they are convinced the possibility that Johnson's status is going to be resolved anytime soon or at all.

It'll get resolved eventually but it's smart for them to keep shopping just in case. If Kai gets his year granted, then we can still bring this kid in and just cut ties with like Connor Dick or somebody else to make room.

Garbage man at Wisconsin. Coming to MSU to take out the trash. Probably planning to be a star for the Bobs. Who knows, maybe he will be a star. Honestly, with the two forwards they have coming in, all they really need is role players at guard and center. They should be a little better than last year.

I think that you are mostly right about that. However, there are always a few good players floating around late into the summer. Then there is this 6th year senior appeal thing going on, that could cause a stir in the portal market, either way it tips. Plus there are still a lot of P4s still mining the portal. At some point in the very near future there will only be garbage left. IMHO, when it reaches that point, you might as well leave a grant open for 2026.
