If they did, it would likely have zero bearing on the playoffs. If either or both wins, it could definitely make a difference. Imagine a team that has an FBS win but loses the Dakota Marker game.
We know from experience that all kinds of weird things can happen. Like winning your play up game and then losing 2 conference games (Griz 2021).

What are everyone's thoughts on the likelihood of upsets? NDSU and MSU might have a shot because of who they're playing, but SDSU has a much harder row to hoe.

It's possible (though admittedly not very likely) that NDSU could beat Colorado but then lose to SDSU which would give them each only one loss. I'm not sure how you would even rank them in that instance although I guess you have to give preference to the head-to-head matchup. It's going to be very interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Actually it does, because if they both lose week 1, then that means one of them is going to have 2 losses after the Dakota Marker. Likely meaning that team will not get a top 2 seed

Not sure if losing to a FBS team and only having one other loss to a top ranked FCS team(assuming that happens) will keep them from a top 2 seed...

Depends on a lot of things like the score differential in those specific games as well as what the number one team's record is and their score differentials, as well as other top teams' records. We also all understand recency bias so that a loss at the beginning of the year won't have as much weight as a loss at the end of the year, ie Furman last year. We could talk about this till the cows come home and we won't know anything until everybody actually starts playing. I do think the schedules fall out in such a way that the top four or five teams could all have a shot at a one or two seed depending upon what things happen over the course of the season. It's going to be fun to watch!

Is it football season yet??

I’d be willing to bet that a 2 loss NDSU team with it’s only losses to FBS Colorado and FCS #1 SDSU gets seeded, especially if SDSU knocks off Wyoming.
SDSU is playing OK State not Wyoming. If they were playing Wyoming their chances of winning would be greatly increased. And the discussion was about who would get a top two seed, not just any seed.

I agree that if there is 2 undefeated teams or a team with just one loss to an FBS team, they would gets seeds over a team with two losses (one to an FBS and one to an FCS). However, there’s been a couple years where these type of two loss teams ended up as a 2 seed. 2015 Illinois State lost to Iowa and to South Dakota State, and 2018 Weber State lost to both San Diego State and Montana.

To Mom's point earlier ... goin really depend on when they lose an by how much! History says you can overcome an early deviation from the win column but late season mishaps can be fatal (or at least a huge hurdle)...

IF the Griz take care of their own business...hopefully last year's NAU debacle created an atmosphere conductive to changes more than how to win out one season only. I didn't think last year's changes were even possible. I was wrong then...

As it turned out, NAU was a better team than was thought and the loss really was note a debacle. On the other hand, the loss was a good wake up call for the team. The coaches also made some adjustments. UM started McDowell the next game, for whatever reason, and that worked out great. Before NAU, UM had started McDowell once and Vidlak twice.

While the NAU loss was bad, much of Griz nation panicked, but neither the team nor the coaches did.

I personally find it unbelievable how so many of Griz nation panicked, and many gave up. Jeez, it was one game. NAU is often a tough game at NAU. UM didn't yet have its qb. It was still in a process to figure out the best qb.

Memo to Griz fans: one loss doesn't make a season, and one win doesn't make a season. It's a long season. Just focus on the next game, and hope that everything stays good or gets better. But don't decide the season on one game.

BH needed a wakeup call, and NAU provided it. I'm really surprised he took the hint, but happy he did.
