2019 Defense

Can you coach basher's please provide some evidence of any one on Coach Stitt.s staff , or the current staff that Fumbled the football, or threw one incomplete pass, or missed one tackle, blew an assignment, missed an extra point,or dropped a pass. You need to understand the gut wrenching pain and frustration that comes with one or two plays that ruin a season, and could impact their future in a tough profession. Unless you have walked a ways in their Moccasins, I suggest you get off their butt, and become a positive Griz Fan. Go Griz

And all that and he STILL never gave up 46 straight.

Well, if the offense could have scored in there anywhere, they wouldn't have given up 46 straight...

Stop...please...no more facts...

So perhaps both coordinator positions should be under the microscope.

Perhaps if everyone took a step back & stopped assuming the talent & experience levels of a young team were what was needed to execute consistently on either set of strategies.

Still curious why you believe he is a good coach?
He is not breske or gregorak but he's pretty good. I think Hauck will replace him in a heartbeat if he finds better.

Once again, what about his background makes you believe that he is "pretty good"?
His experience and track record, he did fine last year.

So he is 'fine' or 'pretty good'?

So Bobby hired a guy to run a defense he was clueless about? Wonderful

and you were expecting....
Clueless was a D staff that could not recognize the Dante Olson talent and relegated him to ST. Clueless is calling full blitzes on 3rd and 17 against a running QB. Clueless is playing man against a QB that is no threat to pass so the DBs have their backs to him as he runs by. Clueless is a defense still looking for a sideline signal while the offense is snapping the ball. The defense in 2016 and 2017 was quite clueless.

And all that and he STILL never gave up 46 straight.
And he never faced Maier. How was his second half against Gubrud?

184, I hope you aren’t comparing Semore to Baer. Baer is a coach.

Of course not. Can the results of a 45 year, almost exclusively FBS experienced defensive coach with 80% or so of shared athletes, be compared to the results of a 10 year primarily D-2 defensive coach with those same athletes? Preposterous!

I'm a fan of neither coach, but I'm not coach bashing, I'm rolling my eyes at what seems to be hypocrisy in the views of coach rating fans that give passes to these DC's based on who hired them. I'd like to see the results of them independently graded against all FCS DCs, and then we'd have something to discuss

Neither did Baer. What’s your point?

Like I’ve said 20 times, if SEMORE had had last year’s results, Kem (and others) would be leading the pitchfork parade...but because BOBBY hired Baer, he’s suddenly a tremendous upgrade who “just didn’t have the horses”....the spin is palpable...

Ok, now it was a youth problem. Man, the goal posts just keep moving.

Yeah, like all those guys here did for Stitt, right? Or do we ONLY have to do that for Bobby and his crew?

No, the difference is that Semore was here to recruit the "horses" (or lack thereof), and Baer wasn't. And Semore was around to train the horses for several years, and Baer was around only for a year. It's not who hired the coach. In the 4th year, you don't get the we don't have the horses excuse.

Hauck noted the youth and depth issues from Day 1. No goal post moving.

AZ, there are 3 reasons that Baer is not taking more heat....first, it is season number 1 for him in Missoula, second, he is following Semore, and third, because many look at his longevity as a FBS coach and think it was because he was a great defensive coach.

And if he does better with Semore's recruits this season, it begs the question why he couldn't do so last season. I would think after 45 years Baer has faced the "it wasn't my players" scenario and figured out ways to play a defense that take advantage of what talent he has and protects the vulnerable (lesser talented) positions. Again I'd really like to see some form of independent grading of these defenses.

The head scratchers for me stem from things I saw in games from last years teams I've never seen before out of Montana teams on both sides of the ball. On offense, once teams started chipping away at the defense and big leads, the offense seemed to go into panic mode. Three and outs and turnovers obviously put pressure on the defense. But I am used to seeing UM defenses step up, rather than wilt, when the offense struggled. What do the stats show? Was it more missed tackles? More yards after catch or first contact? More big plays? Less third down stops? Less fourth down stops? More yards given up on first down? Less sacks? Shorter fields? I'm sure these stats are tracked internally, I just wonder if they were tracked anywhere externally?

That happened only in 2018? Apparently you missed the 2017 EWU game which played exactly as you describe.

Next year won't be just Semore's recruits. Will include more and more Hauck/Baer recruits.

Why didn't Semore/Stitt have more experience on defense in 2018? Where were the transfers and JC's to fill in gaps? Shaw? Who else?

The Stitt offense often failed to get first downs as games went on. Put a lot of pressure on the defense.

I am not saying that Baer had better, or much better, results than Semore, 2/3 of the defensive stats were remarkably similar, but the 2018 defense gave up fewer big plays, tackled better, played more physical, etc. In my view, those were positives times for the future.

Note that I was never a Semore basher; mostly a supporter.

The selective memory seems to be a bad problem on egriz these days.

Only if you’re looking to lay blame. No matter if you’re a glass half-full or half-empty type, I always find there’s room for more scotch (beverage of your choice) in the glass.

Another great example of the echo chamber taking over. AZ proclaims on day one that Baer is no good—apparently for no reason other than he’s too old. Now AZ’s got to defend that position (and ignore the fact that there is no better known/available replacement, or anyone with Baer’s experience and awesome name).
So he compares him to Semore! and some compare him to the new UNDSU coach. Reality is, we should be comparing him to Breske, Paulson, and Ty. The argument can be made that he outperformed 2 out of 3 of those in his 1st year.
Further, Baer’s D produced our first Buchanan finalist in a long time, and a freshman award, too. Has that ever happened here on the same D?
I’m not saying he’s the best ever, but he certainly is much better than the credit he gets on here. The D improved this year, particularly the run-D. If you don’t believe it, take a moment and think about this year’s CP game vs the past several

Cal Poly was awful this year and they still piled on some rushing yards on us granted we blew them out and got turnovers. So not a great example I do think we were more sound this year. There were still some epic historic collapses that should not happen but agreed we did play hard and physical this year.
