2017 Vim's Montana High School Football Recruiting List

Vim, you have to help me understand how a guy like Nate Dick starts out at number 12 on your board and stays at number 12 after winning the Montana Gatorade player of the year, putting up huge numbers, and almost single-handedly leading his team to an undefeated season and the AA state championship.

I use a guy like McCutchen in Bozeman for reference. You had him in the 20 something range and was bumped up to number seven after you talked about his big year and him needing a big year to move up. Wouldn't Nate's huge year and all the accolades also play a role?

Well Nate likely won't play QB in college. So you have to project him as an athlete. Stats are great here but look at the player instead. Where does he project? WR/DB. Lance is 6'3", 190 lbs and was First Team All-State at WR and DB. As an athlete, would you rank Nate higher than Tadan Gilman or Troy Andersen? Its hard to because they are bigger and faster than Nate. Then you got guys like Luke Gonsioroski and Tanner Wilson who are a little bigger than Mate but again have both shown more speed. I also think both of them are better QB prospects than Nate. It was hard but I scouted Nate as an ATH.

By the way, Top 20 is pretty good in Montana.

Thanks for your feedback I was just curious more than anything. Mostly I was surprised that a Gatorade player of the year would be ranked outside the top 10 (let alone 5) as I can't think of any other MT GPOY where that would be the case

I was wondering the same thing, but then you look at who's at the top...I think you look at the entire package and in general those uppers are probably "better".

From what I have seen of him, at least athletically, he is a mix of a few players...

Kyle Samson to me is a bit better comparison, in that his athletic ability plays else where. Not that Desin's didn't, but Dick could end up anywhere from RB, Slot to potentially a hybrid corner on defense. Dick is an above average athlete with a great motor. Rumor is he comes from a great family too.

He has great leadership intangibles and reminds me a bit of Shann Shillinger in high school. He just finds a way, and as a few have told me about Dick that kids knew that he would make plays. Situation didn't change his confidence, performance or attitude.

His issue all along was where is the logical positional landing spot in college. I think the ranking is a fair assessment, but it is hard to find a player in the state who could beat you in as many ways as he did this year.

All in all, a good get by the Griz.

And there it is. And before anyone goes there, I believe it's a given that he's great in space. It is a good get.

Keep in mind he was only offered a partial by the Griz and unsure of what the Bobcats offered (I think a partial as well) so wasn't considered a "full-ride" kid by the two in-state FCS schools. I'm honestly a little surprised he didn't choose Carroll or Rocky who were recruiting him as a QB. But the kid doesn't shy away from competition. The Griz may have found their incumbent Z receiver when Louis-McGee graduates. Nate is more "quick" than "fast" as he doesn't have the straight-line speed of kids like Gabe Sulser, Troy Andersen, and Keaton Andersen. But the kid is really, really tough in the open field. He broke 11 tackles against Helena Capital this year on an 89 yard touchdown run.

I guess it depends on what you are ranking. If you are ranking athletes based on college football potential, then I suppose there are some ahead of Dick. If you are ranking the "top football players in Montana," then Dick belongs much higher if not at the top.

Yeah I do. And I think you kind of have to with the ranking. I mean, Columbia Falls QB Dakota Bridwell broke all sorts of Montana High School passing records this year for both career and season stats. But he is struggling to get NAIA attention from what I have heard. And then Brady McChesney a few years ago set season QB records for Kalispell Glacier and was named Offensive MVP in AA....received a PWO from the Cats. So sometimes stats get in the way of what the player looks like on tape and from what I see on tape, Nate is an athlete, not a QB. Also, if Nate was considered a "top" player by the Griz or Cats, he would've received much more attention and a higher offer than what the two schools gave him this year. That is my opinion on it.

By the way, thanks SoldierGriz for the props. You guys have actually led a really good and productive discussion on Nate's signing with good insight. I expected pitchforks for not ranking him in the Top 10 despite knowing he would likely win GPOY.

This is kind of an odd tweet and it kind of tells me they have offered scholarship money to only one more Montana player. So I think he is either talking about Luke Gonsioroski or Marcus Welnel.

Yeah not a fan of Semore's tweet when there a couple good Montanans that could be getting some sort of offer. Kind of alienates the others who maybe are considering Montana like that lineman Berg. Maybe he just meant for the defense, not sure.
