Hovey arrived in Missoula on June 8 and has spent the past two months not only staying in shape with offseason workouts, but trying to get to know his new teammates ahead of Montana's season opener in three weeks.

"Very precise routes," UM outside receivers coach Nolan Swett said of his first impression of Hovey. "You can definitely tell he's a mature, full player."

"Did a lot of the heavier personnel last year. I had a little bit more of a blocking role," Hovey said, "but would have liked to get some more passes. This is that opportunity."

"I think it really prepared me now that I'm going to have to learn another offense this year, even though this is not a pro-style offense," he said. "It'll be my third one; I've seen a bunch of the same plays called different names."

Markell Sanders and Yamen Sanders (no relation, but have both spent time in FBS programs) provided smothering coverage in the secondary. Linebacker James Banks out of Alabama-Birmingham proved to be a defensive menace, and Wisconsin transfer TJ Reynard added more impressive moments, also bringing FBS experience.

Despite the solid coverage from the Griz DBs, James Homan, Keenan Curran, Caleb Lyons, Jerry Louie-McGee and Makena Sims all hauled in plenty of passes. Newcomer Jed Nagler out of Whitefish made a series of impressive catches, as did Massachusetts transfer Lamarriel Taylor.

The corps of kickers also found their groove on the wet grass surface at the Riverbowl. Eric Williams, Tim Semenza and Patrick LeCorre are each making a case to replace Daniel Sullivan, one of the most efficient kickers in UM history.

Play of the day

With the defense put together a strong outing, the play of the day came from Oregon State transfer Justin Strong. During one of the first 11-on-11 sessions of the practice, Strong closed in on a pass headed his way, got a hand on the ball, popping it up in the air, and collecting again with the same single hand for an interception.

"He's the head man in charge of the offense, besides Stitt basically," noted senior safety Yamen Sanders. "He's just a great guy, a great leader. He brings everything to the game that you want in quarterback, that you want in a player, that you want in a teammate and friend."

"Well, I fell old enough to be a coach," joked the 22-year old Gustafson, who is a 5th year senior at UM. "So I mean the dudes definitely look up to me. And I'll be there for them if they have any issues adjusting to Grizzly football life."

"I put a lot of pressure on myself," said Kidder. "So it's just adding to everything I do for myself. It's a cool feeling, but at the same time it's all preseason stuff. I just got to go out there and prove it now."

"He's excited to get going," added head coach Bob Stitt. "He has worked his tail off to get his body in the shape that it is. He has cut some weight, but he has gained some muscle. And he told me he is as strong as he has ever been."

Coach Stitt liked the kickers last 2 days. BTW, who coaches the kickers?

I'm excited about Reynard! He could really be a difference-maker for our defense.

Seems like a good dude. The move from Madison to Missoula must've been a fairly easy adjustment. Having family in Madison I'd say it's just a bigger version of Missoula.

Day 2 write up. Second time freshman receiver Samori Toure has received mention. He was one of the dudes I was most excited about when he signed. Him and Akem are going to be studs for years

Yes! Toure had possibly the most impressive highlight reel I have ever seen. Play after play. I think he had 16 TDs his senior year. And, several were on "fly sweeps"! He reminds me of.....dare I say it.......Randy Moss. But, I'm betting he still redshirts this year.

I wish Toure had Moss' speed. Moss has the 2nd fastest 40-time is Florida State Seminole history, behind Deon Sanders.

But YES, Toure is INCREDIBLE :!: i am extremely excited about him.
