[On Tripp's interception of JJ] “We were just in a basic man-3 coverage with underneath help and Jordan (Johnson) looked front side and there was a backside route and I reached backside,” Tripp explained. “I was fortunate enough to get there. I thought Jordan was going to thread the needle because he’s done that about 10 times to me in practice.
“It’s one of those things where you have to keep learning. Jordan Johnson is the best we’re going to see all year, bar none I’ll say that right now. That offense and Jordan, nobody is going to throw a nicer ball than that kid right there and nobody is going to be a better leader, so it’s fun to play against the best
[On JJ's 40 yard pass to Ellis Henderson] “We ran a sluggo and Jordy, I read the coverage and I think he was reading the same thing, so we were kind of on the same page and I knew the ball was going to come to me,” Henderson said. “I just tried to give a hard fake and he threw a great ball. I reacted to it and made the catch.”
Tripp was one of two Griz defenders to pick off a pass. The other was freshman linebacker Tucker Schye of Malta, who snared a Brady Gustafson attempt and scooted 41 yards for a touchdown.
“You know the defense – the coaches and the players – weren’t satisfied after that scrimmage last Sunday,” Montana head coach Mick Delaney said. “They put a ton of emphasis this week on getting ready to get going and play fast and make plays.”

Montana’s pro-set scheme popular on the front line

“We didn’t really have any two tight end sets,” Poehls said of Montana’s zone read attack of 2012. “It’s easier now because we can bring our splits down and just bowl people over.
“It doesn’t matter how big that D-tackle is when you got me and Danny Kistler on the right side, just 600 pounds worth of man bowling everyone over.”
Montana’s pass defense was a big reason — not the only reason — that the Grizzlies finished the 2012 season with a losing record for the first time in 25 years. It wasn’t pretty: UM ended the year ranked last in the Big Sky Conference and second-to-last in the FCS with an average of 288.4 passing yards allowed per game and 22 touchdowns.
“A lot of the stuff with us (last year) was just being on the same page,” senior strong safety Bo Tully said during Montana’s annual Media Day on Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. “And so that’s a huge thing we’ve tried to work on this offseason is from coverage to coverage and different situations knowing exactly what the other guy’s doing.
“That way we can work together. Because we got some good players, so if we’re doing the right things, we’re going to be a good squad.”
“Consistency and finishing games. Those were things that we lacked last year,” said defensive end Zack Wagenmann, who did his part with 11½ sacks in 2012. “There was quite a few games where we were in the lead, or at the end of the game we were right there able to, you know, make a push to win the game and were unable to do so.
“So finishing games, playing consistent, not having blown coverages, not missing assignments that lead to touchdowns, being sound and finishing games … it’s going to help us.”
In seven years under former coach Bobby Hauck, the Griz were an unbelievable plus-92 in turnover margin. Is there any surprise, then, that the team had an 80-17 record in that span and made three trips to the national championship game?
In Robin Pflugrad’s first year as coach in 2010, UM was minus-7 in turnovers and missed the playoffs. The following year, Pflugrad’s Griz were plus-11, the best in the Big Sky, and made a run to the semifinals.
Last season under Mick Delaney, they reverted back to negative territory — minus-2 — and finished 5-6. Needless to say, the Grizzlies a putting a huge onus on turnover margin again in 2013.
"It's been a lot of fun working with those guys, you feel like you brought up Danny and William and Schmaing and Trevor and all these guys." said Gragg, and former UM All-American and 11-year player in the NFL. "They all have different personalties, but when they get on the field they play as a unit. It's an easier job for me now because they work so hard, and they are so in tune with what they can do to get better.
"I think both of them (Kistler and Poehls) have a shot at getting to the next level," Gragg said. They have worked so hard to better themselves, and every year they've improved on their foot speed and their pad level, and the things that are critical for them to be successful in the next level. I think they've got a better than a good shot on playing on Sundays. Not just being free agents, but a chance of getting drafted, and a chance of playing."
"It's really exciting," Kistler continued. "I think we are a very physical and athletic offensive line. My four years we've had a lot of competition on the offensive line, especially in the weight room, so push me. I really enjoy getting better every year, because I am never satisfied how I do each year. I am just excited to go out and try to get better every day. I am just thrilled to get this (season) kicked off in a couple of weeks."
"With our dynamic running backs and `Fence' (Hynson) kind of as the mad scientist of the offense, it's been a great opportunity to get involved with that and give some in-pit," Gragg said. "Fence is doing a nice job, and I think we've got a good thing going with this co-coordinator thing."
"We're going to probably have an eight-person rotation with our offensive line. Eight guys will see the field on any given Saturday."
Dominique Bobo, one of the premier sprinters in the prep ranks last year from Wichita Falls, Texas, recently quit the Griz football team to focus on track and field here at Montana. Bobo was playing wide receiver.

Its not like our WRs a slobs either, but all I know is we best get to the QB regularly until they get things fixed in the secondary. Go Griz

Again I think it was in skelly. That drill is meant for the offense. We'll find out for better or worse Aug 31.
“I think it helped a lot because now our new offense with new terminology is like second nature,” said senior wideout Cam Warren, who had several sparkling 15-yard catches in a crowd during Wednesday morning’s practice.
“We’d come out and try to simulate one of these (August) practices to the best of our ability,” he said. “It really helped because the offense does have a lot of volume to it. We were kind of able to hit the ground running when fall camp started.”
“The moment I met Jordy I just feel like we’ve connected,” Henderson said. “I hang out with him all the time on and off the field. It’s something where we don’t have to try. It’s just nice to be on the same page as your quarterback and really not have to think about it.”
Johnson has said from the beginning of August workouts that he loves the speed of this year’s wide receivers. Two weeks later he has noticed another significant strength.
“They’re just playmakers,” the junior said. “Sometimes you put the ball up and you know it’s either going to be them or nobody because they’re going to go up and make a play. That’s a nice thing to have.”
One experienced wideout who will not be ready for Appalachian State a week from Saturday is junior Mitch Saylor. Delaney says he’s ahead of schedule coming off surgery but probably won’t be available until at least mid-September.
Talking doesn't win football games unfortunately. And neither does playing against our own team. Season can't start soon enough.mtgrizrule said:Thanks for the videos guys. Loved JJ's quote, "I will do whatever it takes to win." I have a feeling that is the mentality of every player and coach this season. I would not want to be the one not with that mentality. I love everything this team is saying since the end of last season.
